Now advising to cancel holidays indefinitely

News today is now saying that travel abroad for holidays should be cancelled indefinitely

This is going to be a massive hit on the industry and people in general

Especially those hoping for September or October half term breaks.

Now advising to cancel holidays indefinitely

I mentioned on another thread that even if I could travel abroad, I don't I'd be confident enough to do it for a long while yet.

Physical distancing will become the norm eventually I think, so will airlines follow suit and only allow a certain number of passengers on board within 2 metres of each other? I dunno, I would be very reluctant to be on a cramped plane anytime soon, not to mind going through an airport either. Just me, the worry wart!

other modes of transport apart from your own car within your country will be the same I think. The quarantine aspect is also an issue.

Sorry to sound so negative, I can't help it considering all the rules we have to observe at the moment.

Will be interesting to see how it works out.

TealWater · 06/04/2020 17:36

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe There's at least two posters on the thread who are concerned with more than just a holiday. A bit of empathy costs nothing and doesn't impact 'lockdown' either. This thread is about holidays. That's the title and point of the thread. Your attack on @MamaBearOnLockdown was nasty and out of line. Yes I am convinced people are looking to lash out for no reason at all.

chocolatviennois · 06/04/2020 17:37

What about summer self catering holidays in France for eg by ferry or eurotunnel? Do you think there is more chance they will be possible as easier to keep one's distance from others?

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 06/04/2020 17:40

The press have sensationalised it into a ALL HOLIDAYS CANCELLED FOREVER type story. It's bullshit

No! I won;t have it Grin
I'm with you on this - they sensationalise and it does my head in.
Nothing much has changed really, surely it's common sense that we won't really be flying off everywhere on holidays as little as a few months away?
I'd have thought it'd be more gradual.
Not just "everyone in August onwards can still go to Magaluf/Tenerife on their holibobs, back to normal!"
Won't work like that I wouldn't have thought.

Mordred · 06/04/2020 17:42

Sad that we won't be able to go to Poland in August (ferry, driving) as we usually do, to visit DW's parents - her dad has a heart condition and her mum isn't well, add the virus on top and it's very worrying we might not see them again .

It's very hard on DW especially, but of course this sort of thing is happening all over.

@flippetdydip that's why I'm convinced that it won't be next year before people can travel. The government surely don't want thousands of people like you to lose their jobs and for the travel industry to be screwed. And our European neighbours desperately need tourism to keep their economies going. There has to be a balance surely.

Longwhiskers14 · 06/04/2020 17:46

Whoops, apologies OP, I misread it. Have asked for my previous comment to be removed.

Kathsmum · 06/04/2020 17:46

Charliecar

Scottish schools go back in august as they break up in June. No news on dates yet but once schools announced I’d guess your hol will be same? Just guessing obv like everyone else!

Shehz21 · 06/04/2020 17:53

Thank you to @KoalasandRabbit @LyingWitchInTheWardrobe @forrasee for replyingSmile

I have some sense of renewed hope that I might be able to take the trip. I certainly do not mind being quarantined until clear before I can see my family, especially my dad. I do not want to pose as a (virus)threat to anyone in that country. However it would break my heart not to be able to see them "indefinitely".

I am clinging on to hope...

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 06/04/2020 17:57

I don’t think it will be the end of travel as we know it though. I think once this is all over people will holiday with a vengeance. I’ve already told dh that we’re - hopefully - going away for my birthday in November, although it will be a U.K. break. I feel as though I want to do loads of travelling. Another few months of being shut up at home is only going to make that worse.

ihearttc · 06/04/2020 18:01

Good grief again the scaremongering on here is absurd.
Clearly you won’t be going on holiday in the next couple of weeks but indefinitely doesn’t mean forever.
DH lived in the Middle East for 4 years and got an email from Emirates saying that they are resuming flights from Dubai to Heathrow at the beginning of May, to Gatwick at the beginning of June and Stansted at the beginning of July. How true that is I don’t know but if DH can’t travel to the ME for work he will be out of a job so I’m trying to remain positive as nothing has changed...it’s just been reworded in a different way.

Shehz21 · 06/04/2020 18:02

Thank you for the advice @Branster. I did check with them and they mentioned I would have to be quarantined for 14 days as per the new rules and I do not mind at all!Smile

GreenTulips · 06/04/2020 18:02

And our European neighbours desperately need tourism to keep their economies going. There has to be a balance surely

The UK holiday market will come back to life, if you can afford it. Plus they’ll need extra staff.

Only the rich will be able to afford to travel, flight prices will rocket.

It won’t go back to cheap and cheerful:

CoffeeandPainting · 06/04/2020 18:03

Normal is a very long time away, at least September / October.
I think

Seventyone72seventy3 · 06/04/2020 18:05

I really hope that cheap flights don't start back up after this all over tbh.

MamaBearOnLockdown · 06/04/2020 18:16

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

what "glee"?!? As you are attacking me, did I sound remotely happy that I had to cancel all my holidays and travel?

You know absolutely nothing about anything. Anyway, when we are barely allowed to go to our nearest shop and can't even drive to go to the nearest beach or park... HOW would the advice about holidays being cancelled not be obvious? Confused

Do you know when shops and schools will reopen? Of course you don't, so you know even less when travel will reopen and holiday travel even less. I don't even know what you found so confusing in there.

Jaxhog · 06/04/2020 18:19

I think the real dilemma now is where you've paid a deposit, but don't know whether you should pay the rest than hope that the holiday will take place or you'll get a refund! Especially as you now can't get coronavirus cover on travel insurance.

We're in this position. We have a big holiday booked for October and paid the deposit last year. But the final payment is due in July.

Ponoka7 · 06/04/2020 18:19

"got an email from Emirates saying that they are resuming flights from Dubai to Heathrow at the beginning of May, to Gatwick at the beginning of June and Stansted at the beginning of July. "

Which makes a mockery of us being in lock down. I think there should be a demand that people have adequate insurance going out, so our government isn't picking up costs to bring them back and before we let a certain number into London, or the UK we need to assess how our health care will cope with another wave.

Xenia · 06/04/2020 18:19

Austria has announced its plan to return to normality which will start with allowing small corner type shops to open first.

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/04/2020 18:24

I’m guessing the reasoning behind saying that today was to stop people rebooking their cancelled Easter holidays to the summer.

ihearttc · 06/04/2020 18:27

Ponoka...I agree. DH has to travel for work however he obviously has all the relevant insurance in place and won’t go until it’s definitely ok to do so. He lived for 4 years over there so being quarantined for 2 weeks when he gets there wouldn’t be a problem for him. However Dubai and most of the UAE is on complete 24 hour lockdown(far far more serious than we have here). Everything is being cleaned and you need a permit to leave the house...so it’s far more likely that we would take it over there than they bring it over to us.

poppadopolis · 06/04/2020 18:29

I really hope that cheap flights don't start back up after this all over tbh.

That's nice for you, but as has been demonstrated, people fly for reasons other than holidays.

I live in country A, my son and his partner in country B and my daughter, her husband and my 2 grandchildren in country C.

I very much hope that it will still be possible to visit them or have them to stay.

Unntil recently my OH had a job in country B. This involved commuting weekly by plane.

montenuit · 06/04/2020 18:41

@Jaxhog we're in the exact same position

I think i'm just going to accept that I've lost my deposit. The payment in full is due in July and our annual travel insurance expires in July. I doubt the renewal will cover this now known eventuality.

OTOH I like October half term holidays as it is relatively quiet. Probably not this year!

justsotiredtired · 06/04/2020 18:44

I have a holiday book for end April in Portugal and the agent is seriously telling me they are open for business! I understand they don't want to refund me the money but it's a bit ridiculous considering Portugal is also in lockdown.
