Lockdown will end sooner than later

Let’s hope the government will listen to the economists. A balance needs to be created.

I honestly do not think Boris will stand for a longterm lockdown. He wants to get back to normality ASAP.

Plus, infection rates are slowing in Europe🙏🏻

“It’s a false argument that we are either going to save lives or save the economy,” said Sir Iain, a former Work and Pensions Secretary. “We are talking about saving lives right now versus saving lives in the future because people have got jobs to go back to, and a strong economy that can raise enough taxes to pay for the NHS.”

Yet when does the crossover point come when the Government has to start prioritising the economy above all else? “I’d say we have until the end of this month,” added Mr Duncan Smith. “We have a chance of saving the economy if we are out of this in three weeks but much longer and businesses won’t be able to be resurrected and charities will go under. And then we will see real suffering. We get this done, we flatten the curve and we get back to normal.”

@HatRack mental health issues will be exacerbated as people haven't been able to access medical assistance during this time. Exercise, fresh air healthy diet and social interaction are commonly touted by medical professionals as being the first steps to improving mental health. Harder to do these things at the moment. Lots of people with anxiety will be scared to leave their house as they won't want to feel as though they're breaking the rules.

Mumlove5 · 06/04/2020 15:59

@BatmanBaby

Exactly! There were over 10,000 suicides after the 2008 recession. 500,000 extra cancer deaths because the money was gone!

We need an economy. If this continues past 3 weeks, like Mr Duncan Smith said, businesses won’t be able to be resurrected and charities will go under.

Yes, the mental health of people whose loved ones die from this. The mental health of the healthcare workers who had to stand in for family as their patient passed away and the family weren't allowed in.

TeenPlusTwenties · 06/04/2020 15:59

Hat Mental health issues:

Well, my DD who was struggling a bit but coping is now hanging on by her fingertips. She is very anxious outdoors (flies, touching a leaf, a cyclist going past etc), and getting more anxious indoors too (touching anything much really). This could tip easily into long term issues impacting her ability to go to school and function in life.

So generally I think increased diagnosable anxiety in the population, OCD behaviours, fears of germs, crowds, separation, and that's just for starters.

slartibarti · 06/04/2020 15:59

Wishful thinking OP. We're not being let out anytime soon.

inlawsimnotsure · 06/04/2020 16:00

@HatRack

For instance, the help I received from the NHS (anorexia inpatient and then out patient) has been put on hold due to lockdown, without having the initial help I am sure I would have died. There will be countless others who were me a year or so ago.

I have a friend that is just about coping with her mental health through therapy and keeping busy. She is now in her flat alone with no weekly therapy. I really worry about her outcome.

There will be other examples too.

Walkaround · 06/04/2020 16:00

People on here may GAF, but Iain Duncan Smith has never given me the impression he GAF about other human beings, so I wouldn’t respect his opinion on anything.

TeenPlusTwenties · 06/04/2020 16:01

Definitely PTSD for some healthcare workers and some recovered patients.

Gin96 · 06/04/2020 16:01

Oh go away @alloutoffucks you’re always scaremongering and making up numbers, a million people worldwide still haven’t died of the virus!

sleepyhorse · 06/04/2020 16:01

“Unfortunately the majority of mumsnet are absolutely loving all of this and would prefer it if the government nailed our front doors shut”

What a strange thing to say! I don’t know one person who isn’t missing their old life and their friends, going to the gym, out for coffee or to the pub! Maybe you had no life before this!!

cantkeepawayforever · 06/04/2020 16:01

@alloutoffucks
I agree. Proper, immediate testing of everyone who falls ill (so families don't have to isolate unnecessarily) as well as antibody testing of everyone (so those who are most likely to be immune can return to high risk contexts without social distancing, such as schools, without fear) would both be brilliant in returning schools to normal.

However, I can't see these being available in sufficient numbers to allow schools to open in the timeframe that many on MN seem to want? Certainly the antibody test is proving highly tricky.

Frankiethree · 06/04/2020 16:02

HatRack. - in my own family I am trapped in lockdown with an abusive stbxh. I have lost my job and my only means of leaving my marriage. My stbxh is also in a bad way as his company which he has built up over many years may not survive this and he will have no income. My DB is isolating with a child with many SEN difficulties which is making life intolerable in his house. Just some examples from my own life.

MamaBearOnLockdown · 06/04/2020 16:02

We’re in London, so rest of country even further from the peak. There is zero chance of lockdown being lifted in early May.

I am hoping the lockdown could be lifted early July and the kids could go back to school for a couple of weeks. I am not sure that's even likely.

artemisalways · 06/04/2020 16:03

No it isn't a strange thing to say.

HouseTornado · 06/04/2020 16:03

TheWordmeister made me laugh too!

And with the flour-for-playdough police thread currently going on, MN is on top form today.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 06/04/2020 16:03

If this continues past 3 weeks, like Mr Duncan Smith said, businesses won’t be able to be resurrected and charities will go under.

Oh, yes, the same IDS who openly persecuted disabled and poor people, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths all in the name of reform and austerity! But in your paradigm, they, like everyone else (because the virus doesn't discriminate and no one knows how each individual will respond to it) are expendable because . . . of money. Says it all really. Fucking hell, taking advice of an utter twat like IDS. He doesn't give a flying fuck about anyone but himself.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/04/2020 16:03

And during a recession deaths tend to go down, but more people may be miserable.

Hmm They do? Go down, I mean? How so?

MamaBearOnLockdown · 06/04/2020 16:04

“Unfortunately the majority of mumsnet are absolutely loving all of this and would prefer it if the government nailed our front doors shut”

more accurately, people are pissed off with CF ignoring the distancing rules and think the government should impose real fines to stop their behaviour. No one wants this horrible situation to last a minute longer than it absolutely must.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 16:04

@inlawsimnotsure I don't care what others do but my kids are not going back to school in 3 weeks time.

ChristmasCarcass · 06/04/2020 16:05

sleepyhorse she’s talking about the people keeping spreadsheets of which neighbours are going out more than once a day, photographing nurses going to work to name and shame them on FB, or accosting strangers over the non-essential contents of their shopping baskets.

There are definitely some Little Hitlers out there who are having a fucking whale of a time right now.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 16:06

And I HATE this, absolutely hate it and can't wait for life to go back to normal.
But my primary focus is that all my family come through this alive and well. Anything else is a bonus.

SpokeTooSoon · 06/04/2020 16:06

The schools will reopen after the May half-term. 1st June. I’d put money on it.

People have got to get back to work and normality or there will be NO MONEY to pay for any of the loans and furloughs.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 06/04/2020 16:07

@alloutoffucks
700 deaths a day is misleading. 708 is the highest we have had. Its usually around the 550-600 mark.
The out of hospital deaths last week was 103 I think. So about 14 a day.
Those deaths are being recorded. Just weekly, not daily.

HouseTornado · 06/04/2020 16:07

SpokeTooSoon - I'm hoping for the same. :)

MamaBearOnLockdown · 06/04/2020 16:07

Oh, yes, the same IDS who openly persecuted disabled and poor people Confused

sometimes I wonder if I live in the same country or dimension as some of the posters on here. It's ... interesting to have a glimpse of their vision of the world.
