Do you think there are still people holidaying in the UK?

The reason I'm wondering is we cancelled a week away next month as I'm not convinced lockdown will be over. It was self catering and obviously there was /is the added issue of lack of food.

On the company website where booking are 'live' I can still see a week booked for end of this week in the cottage we'd booked.

Surely people aren't driving across the UK to holiday cottages?

Oh yes they are. I live in a touristy part of Cornwall and people are arriving. Local people are very angry.

Thetigeronthewobbelboard · 06/04/2020 14:25

I know one where the site has been left open for NHS workers (who will get it for free) as accommodation as it’s near the hospital. It’s left open for ease so they can just book it. Any other bookings that come in are just cancelled.

AmelieTaylor · 06/04/2020 14:27

I expect some idiots are ignoring the guidelines. I hope anyone letting to them gets a huge fine!!!

Toothsil · 06/04/2020 16:00

@UtterTwaddle that's terrible, I'm not surprised the locals are getting angry. As well as spreading it, they are potentially putting more strain on your local health services.

UtterTwaddle · 06/04/2020 16:21

@Toothsil Exactly - we only have one main hospital in Cornwall with only 15 ICU beds. There really aren’t resources to cope with extra people Sad

UtterTwaddle · 06/04/2020 16:25

@Thetigeronthewobbelboard Yes, some sites and holiday let owners are being absolutely brilliant and passing on the accommodation to NHS workers for free so that they can stay there and keep their families safe. And there’s a hotel taking in people who’ve been discharged from hospital but aren’t quite ready to go home. Some people are being stars!Smile

I don't think there can be that many people going on holiday. I had bookings with air bnb and Sykes cottages, both of which have cancelled bookings, plus caravan sites have closed apart from those that have allowed nhs staff to use them.

ifonly4 · 06/04/2020 16:37

It's been reported more than once locally that police in our county will be ramping up their efforts this week to stop people, and they'll be especially looking for those who look like they're going on holiday or towing a caravan - it hasn't been stated what the consequences are though. Our employers are obviously anticipating more police intervention as I've been issued with a notice confirming I'm an keyworker and DH has been told how he should deal with confirming where he works.

ChristmasCarcass · 06/04/2020 16:49

I’m really surprised people are even physically able to book anything!

I was browsing wistfully on the website of the hotel we were planning on going to this summer (NHS frontline so even if Lockdown is lifted there is zero chance of that happening now!). And it just wasn’t taking any bookings, full stop. Not even for December. I had a look at others in the area (Kent coast), same story.

wonderstuff · 06/04/2020 16:52

We've just postponed our uk caravan park holiday. All the sites are closed. Re-booked for Easter 2021. People shouldn't be going on holiday.

transformandriseup · 06/04/2020 17:10

Oh yes they are. I live in a touristy part of Cornwall and people are arriving. Local people are very angry.

You are right, MIL works in a supermarket and said there were several camper vans in the car park today.

Troels · 06/04/2020 17:12

Yes they are. Our local Police have been dealing with people arriving all weekend, and said they are now continuing that and moving on to checking holiday homes. They have told people to pack up and go home

PeppermintPasty · 06/04/2020 17:18

Yes, I live in Cornwall too and there are plenty of these idiots about, I include the holiday let owners of course. Utter bastards, everyone’s really angry about it here.

definitelygc · 06/04/2020 17:24

I read an article today saying there were lots of properties out in the country currently listed on Airbnb describing themselves as "self-isolation retreats". Apparently Airbnb has been notified and will be removing them but who knows if that will actually happen as Airbnb is desperate for cash right now.

cologne4711 · 06/04/2020 17:30

Hmm I think it's possible. My husband was a bit judgey about one of his colleagues today. I'll change the geographical locations in case it's "outing" but lets say someone lives and works in Leeds, has been staying in Southport for the past couple of weeks and is now off work and going to North Wales. He said he was surprised the colleague actually admitted to it!

Rowgtfc72 · 06/04/2020 17:46

We're booked into a holiday park in Cornwall week before Whitsun half term. Park is currently closed but they are reassessing on the 20th April. We paid in full and are crossing our fingers they stay shut as it's not money we can afford to lose but certainly wouldn't be irresponsible enough to even think of travelling.

Remmy123 · 06/04/2020 17:51

Yep someone in my family has and I am raging

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 06/04/2020 17:53

Well we should be on holiday right now. We had an email from the holiday company saying that anything booked before April 30th was cancelled and they’d get back to everyone in due course. Then I had an email from the owner of the cottage last week saying the booking was still there and she hoped we weren’t expecting to go. She hadn’t heard anything from the holiday company either. I am feeling extremely grumpy this week at the thought that we should be on holiday. Grateful that that’s all I’ve got to worry about though.

Divebar · 06/04/2020 17:57

My in-laws live in a small beach front block of flats in a tourist town in Cornwall and says a couple of flats are occupied with tourists. As you would imagine they know who owns all the flats and are unimpressed to say the least.

Alez · 06/04/2020 18:04

We were supposed to be on holiday in the lake District now. We booked through a holiday cottage site, who cancelled the booking. I don't think you can book anything on their site now until May. I would guess anyone still going on holiday will have made direct arrangements with whoever owns the place as it sounds like all the big websites have closed to bookings.
