Just wondering how everyone is doing.

We had a good start with a Brexit stash. Have had a couple of click and collects and one normal supermarket shop. DH has been checking regularly for stock though. Our supermarket has been up and down in terms of stock.
We have most stuff, couldn’t get cornflakes last week and can’t get tinned tomatoes. Trying to cook with potatoes as much as we can as pasta is sometimes not available. Loo roll arrived as normal last week in the clock and collect.

I think we’ve been quite lucky and fortunate to be able to stock up in advance.

How’s everyone else doing? Missing major stuff and having to eat odd combinations or fairly complete now.

I'm over potatoes! reminds me if my childhood, Irish manmy!

Chickychickydodah · 06/04/2020 13:22

I’ve been shopping today, everything in stock (even loo rolls) supplies are getting better every week ,

dottiedodah · 06/04/2020 13:24

We are well stocked here TBH .Got plenty of choice as SB /Tesco /Asda all short drive away.Only thing we really cant get hold of is Flour, but I googled it and there is none spare apparently .All is going to make industrial bread /rolls and so on.

UnderfootRomance · 06/04/2020 13:26

Best Before dates on fruit and veg are a load of nonsense. The way you store them is key.

Absolutely. We're just about to use the last allotment onions that were harvested last October time.

Someone asked about fruit. We've frozen all the berries and rhubarb but apples last a few months out of the freezer, if stored correctly. We were eating ours until just into the new year and they were also picked around Sept/Oct time.

TBF supermarket fruit and veg has often gone through a few extremes before it gets toyou, which reduces their ability to store well.

UnderfootRomance · 06/04/2020 13:27

One neighbour or another tends to be going shooing every other day

Good for them. Social distancing is important [grin Grin

tooties · 06/04/2020 13:29

@UnderfootRomance you do know that not everyone grows their own fruit & veg?

tooties · 06/04/2020 13:31

We prepped on the proviso of 3 months of disruption back at the end of Jan/early February.

I'm amazed at this foresight tbh, since the WHO in Jan said there was no risk of human to human transmission

loumoo · 06/04/2020 13:33

We’re ok but only as we do Gusto and they’re still delivering for now. Just started weaning the 6m old so was in a bit of a panic but found a local company for fruit/veg boxes that will add eggs and milk and the bakers are delivering bread/rolls. We’re in the suburbs so fortunate that we have these options.

Spamellahamella · 06/04/2020 13:34

Doing ok here. Had stock piled enough for a fortnight so used that at first. Yesterday I had my last Tesco online delivery. Didn't have any out of stocks and only 8 subs. Was very pleased. That will last us another fortnight. Inbetween we are having weekly fruit and veg delivery and milkman coming twice a week. Can't and won't get any more deliveries after that but we do have a click and collect slot.

H1978 · 06/04/2020 13:34

Still in self-isolation but enough stock for a couple of weeks yet before I have to do a dreaded supermarket shop although might need to go before then if DM and DF need anything as they are elderly and not going out at all

Msloverlover · 06/04/2020 13:41

Brexit stash?? Is that a thing??

Bornfreebutincovidchains · 06/04/2020 13:47

Touch wood at the moment, good.
Using preps and topping up occasionally with deliveries.

PurpleDaisies · 06/04/2020 13:47

Hope you’re washing hands after touching wood!

Rebootingagain · 06/04/2020 13:49

Thinking about it, biggest change here is actually how much we are eating at home, and we have still managed without any real panic.

We never have breakfast at home (apart from brunch on a Sunday) lunch is always at work or school and then out on a Saturday and Sunday.

Evening meal is hello fresh three nights a week and then normally the local pub or another restaurant most other evenings.

Not including the stuff hello fresh deliver we probably only have 2 out of the 21 (each) meals a week at home so was actually surprised how much we had in considering we are now home 24/7

SansaSnark · 06/04/2020 13:56

I had to do a 7 day self isolation before lockdown started as I was coughing, so I used up a lot of my tins etc then. Since then I've been shopping about once a week- the first time there was a lot of stuff unavailable, but since then, shelves have been pretty much full. I have been able to get bread from a local baker and toilet paper from wilkos throughout.

I have been getting up early on Monday mornings to go shopping, though- I think if I left it later in the day there might be a lot less choice in the shops. I am lucky to live in the sort of town that still has independent bakers and butchers who are open and have lots of stock. My parents, who live in a town with one large supermarket and a couple of smaller ones, are definitely having a more difficult time with shopping, although they are able to manage with what they can buy for the moment.

I do feel a bit like this is the first time I have experienced proper food insecurity though- I'm lucky enough to have never really had to worry about money so much that I had to watch what food I was buying. At the moment, whether I am able to buy certain foods is definitely occupying a lot of my mental energy, and I worry about what could happen to food supplies in the next few weeks.

WanderingLost167 · 06/04/2020 14:01

I do Hello Fresh and its coming in very handy.

UnderfootRomance · 06/04/2020 14:02

@tooties I can just repeat the bit I added which covered that...

"TBF supermarket fruit and veg has often gone through a few extremes before it gets toyou, which reduces their ability to store well."

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/04/2020 14:02

China was already affected - lots of us were following it on here and were stocking up.

bellinisurge · 06/04/2020 14:03

I'm pleased to see the anti - prepper sniping that was an hourly event on here has calmed down.
Preppers are not panic buyers. They are the opposite. Just in case anyone still has that ridiculous idea in their heads.

MinesaPinot · 06/04/2020 14:11

We're fine here. Our butchers and bakers are well stocked and we've got three little supermarkets - Nisa, Sainsbury's local and the Co-op for groceries. I can get loo rolls and tinned tomatoes! Local garden centre and farm shops have fresh eggs, veg etc. Tend to get our shopping when we're out for our exercise rather than make a separate trip. Haven't driven to a supermarket since lockdown.

Rebootingagain · 06/04/2020 14:21

Biggest issue here is getting rid of all the extra rubbish.

One bin, emptied fortnightly, normally not even half full.

Now a load more rubbish to get rid of (lots of bottles) and the recycling bins are all closed as are the amenity sites.

I could burn a lot of it, but not allowed to do that either anymore and rapidly running of of indoor space to store the clean stuff

HavenDilemma · 06/04/2020 14:31

@Picklypickles The stuff that is brown and comes in clear bottles. Is about 29p a bottle! Usually is Pine scented.

lynsey91 · 06/04/2020 14:31

We always have a good stock of food and have done for years. Also we do a big shop every 8 weeks and buy in bulk. We buy fresh fruit and veg as we need it, every 2 weeks on the whole.

We had been shopping just before this all started so had loads of food.

In the last 4 weeks DH has been out twice to buy fresh fruit and veg and eggs. We buy our eggs from local people that keep chickens. DH has bought the fruit and veg from a farm shop as he prefers not to have to go to a supermarket.

We still have loads of tinned items such as tomatoes, baked beans, soup. In fact we have 8 tins of chopped tomatoes and 7 of whole tomatoes and 9 tins of baked beans.

We also have 4 packs of pasta and 2 packs of rice plus 3 different kinds of lentils, 5 different kinds of beans, a massive bag of chickpeas and lots of different nuts. We are both vegetarian so eat loads of all these things.

We have a freezer full of bread (if we run out I will make some), milk, home made soup, home made meals, pizza bases, Linda McCartney sausages and sausage rolls, veggie burgers.

We easily have 2 months of meals.

Lots of friends used to laugh at the fact that we had a stock of food but they now say they will do the same in the future.

Vinorosso74 · 06/04/2020 14:39

I need to go shopping tomorrow. With all of us being home all the time we are getting through a lot more food.
Cupboard stocks are running low (I've not been able to get a lot of things) and we need fresh stuff. We do have a few things in freezer in case we end up having to isolate. Am hoping I can get things like pasta and pulses.

UnrulySalvia · 06/04/2020 14:51

We're fine, and we certainly won't starve, but we're "shieding" due to DP's health so can't go to the shops and haven't heard anything about the "highly vulnerable" supermarket registration yet, so food planning etc is a bit of a pain. We do have lovely friends and neighbours who will bring us things but obviously we can't take the piss or be too fussy and I really miss picking out my own food shopping! Plenty worse off than us of course though.
