Just wondering how everyone is doing.

We had a good start with a Brexit stash. Have had a couple of click and collects and one normal supermarket shop. DH has been checking regularly for stock though. Our supermarket has been up and down in terms of stock.
We have most stuff, couldn’t get cornflakes last week and can’t get tinned tomatoes. Trying to cook with potatoes as much as we can as pasta is sometimes not available. Loo roll arrived as normal last week in the clock and collect.

I think we’ve been quite lucky and fortunate to be able to stock up in advance.

How’s everyone else doing? Missing major stuff and having to eat odd combinations or fairly complete now.

Retired but ok. DH just done pensioner hour at Sainsbury’s and security guard thought he wasn’t old enough (68). Not grey so produced bus 🚌 pass.

I have given up alcohol for the duration of lockdown. Need a clear head and a sober immune system even more than liquid escape

Alcohol kills germs and viruses :)

ihearttc · 06/04/2020 12:19

I can’t get dishwasher salt anywhere...appreciate it’s not exactly essential however 4 people eating 3 meals a day at home means my dishwasher is on all the time!!

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 06/04/2020 12:20

Well our 'silly Brexit stash' has done us proud over the last couple of weeks. Alongside that and the weekly Hello Fresh delivery we've only had to make two supermarket trips in the last 3 weeks for top-up fruit, veg, bread and milk and chocolate and wine

(oh and we've had a couple of takeaways in that time too)

3 adults and one older teen in the household so we get through a fair bit of food!

Aware we're lucky to have the space and facilities to store it all, though.

Doggodogington · 06/04/2020 12:20

It’s fine, shops are full, shelves are mostly full. Haven’t run out of anything really, don’t know what the fuss was about.

MrsLeclerc · 06/04/2020 12:26

I have a brexit/snow stockpile (during the beast from the east our local shop didn’t get proper supplies for 4 days and as daily shoppers we were stuffed!).

As we have a toddler I stocked up on pasta, tinned fruit, veg and little sausage and spaghetti type tins. Luckily I had bought some anti bac sprays and wipes for the high chair. Also had meat and veg in the freezer to make meals if necessary. As it turns out we needed it. I had to isolate last week and the supplies have seen us through.

A lovely neighbour posted a letter through the door with the phone numbers for local shops delivering fruit, veg, bread and milk. Also found a butchers who will deliver so I’ve used those so far.

I’ve done one click and collect for the end of the week to top up on store cupboard bits for us (and nappies!!) and to get some shopping for my elderly parents.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 06/04/2020 12:30

The arrogance of those that live in well stocked areas, when they then come out with such gems as don’t know what the fuss was about. just shows what a privileged position you’re in. I’m extremely lucky and recognise that I’m privileged that I was able to prep because many of the shops around here were practically stripped bare. I’ve been able to help others and have also received help, but many are still struggling.

daisychain01 · 06/04/2020 12:32

@RB68 my DM is like your MIL, she would be starving with half a slice of mouldy bread rather than ask for help. What is it with that generation, they end up causing more stress, by not accepting help.

I'm frantic with worry that DM is going to be malnourished at this rate, or is putting herself at risk going into Tesco.

I cannot get any on-Line delivery slots with Tesco or Asda (trying for the past week!). As she lives 100 miles from us, online delivery is the best option but not if I can't book a slot Sad.

Leflic · 06/04/2020 12:34

I’ve got most if everything but I’m finding it impossible not to have to do smaller shops. Being in an actual shop does my head in.

I’m very used to online shopping and gave the same staples every week with store cupboard bits on rotation. Which you can change up to the night before. So I always have everything for £40.

Last Monday I did a shop that would last for 2 weeks. Only most fresh stuff was reduced or short dated I then went Wednesday (mostly for someone else) and ended up going Friday as lacking meat, salad and wine . Add just went this morning to get lamb and Easter eggs for next weekend so that I DEFINITELY don’t need to go out.

But still forgot pepper and oil. And I’ll want wine.Aaarrghhh.

WitsEnding · 06/04/2020 12:36

I always have a store cupboard as I usually cook from scratch and often on a whim. No freezer, small fridge. I'm meal planning, eating well and shopping less than once a week for me at the moment, I could stretch it a lot longer if fruit and veg lasted better outside the fridge.

Amotherof6 · 06/04/2020 12:40

still cannot get a delivery shop at any of our local supermarkets despite being in the vulnerable health group and isolating...seems some book ahead and take all the slots.
Thankfully have lovely friends that go to supermarket and leave at the doorstep... sad though since we need quite a large amount of food normally.
Feel annoyed at the selfish who appear to have slots and then a smallish delivery or stockpiling... still it takes all sorts and really has shown the nice from the selfish. There are some really lovely people volunteering out there and once this is over I personally wont forget them.

rabbitsnose · 06/04/2020 12:42

We have an Ocado order coming on Wednesday, milkman coming tomorrow which will include a loaf of bread.

We've been using up batch cooking from days of yore, and eating less desirable stuff that's previously been ignored. Never a bad thing. I'm quite enjoying being more frugal and less wasteful.

BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 06/04/2020 12:46

No delivery slots in next 3 weeks despite DH being in shielded/ extremely vulnerable group. Can’t wait to be able to shop next Monday. Family of 6 and I’m skipping meals regularly so there’s enough for everyone else.

Have you registered on the government website and then contacted whichever supermarket/s to tell them that you have registered.

mochajoes · 06/04/2020 12:49

We prepped on the proviso of 3 months of disruption back at the end of Jan/early February.

Do you not want any fresh food?

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/04/2020 12:53

Do you not want any fresh food?

You can prep and still have fresh food.

I make bread and cakes,, we have milk, butter, cheese etc in the freezer. Lots of fruit and veg last ages. Potatoes, carrots, parsnips, butternut squash, apples, pears etc etc. Rhubarb is ready in the garden, salad leaves are cut and come again, herbs are also growing on the windowledge and beansprouts are growing in the sprouter.

BrandyandBabycham · 06/04/2020 12:55

We’re very lucky here as there are loads of local businesses doing home delivery ( although finding out from experience that they are not all reasonably priced & some whack on a hefty delivery charge). One farmshop I used said they were shocked themselves by the prices of the stuff they bought elsewhere to go with the stuff they produced themselves. £1.50 for a red pepper for example! I have had a delivery from the local eco friendly store. Usually you go in with your own containers but at present it’s just paper bags. They actually have wholemeal pasta which I can’t find anywhere else. Also hoping to set up a butchers delivery & a local bakers is delivering tomorrow, including gluten free products for DD. I’m very happy about that as Aldi, where I do my main shop, don’t do GF stuff. A dairy I’ve ordered from in the past delivers milk in glass bottles, although I didn’t order enough so had to pop to Spar yesterday.
Finding Aldi to be very well stocked although on Sat I couldn’t get cucumber, iceberg lettuce, leeks, soya milk or sultanas ( all for DM as she & DF can’t go out). The only shop I have found paracetamol is Lidl, which also looked to be very well stocked a couple of weeks ago. Avoiding Asda as DH said it was very confusing & he didn’t feel particularly safe.

Howmanysleepsnow · 06/04/2020 12:59

@BringMeSunshineInMyLife yes, did that when he got the letter (2 days after self isolation started!) Apparently the requests are “being processed”

Esspee · 06/04/2020 13:00

I’m in Glasgow and shop at Lidl. Their shelves are full of almost everything thankfully.

tooties · 06/04/2020 13:01

Didn't do any panic buying or prepping - don't see the point unless you have a massive house to store what you would actually need because what's the point of a 2 week stash.

Have milk delivered regularly anyway, have arranged fruit & veg & meat/fish boxes. Have 2 click & collect slots for the next month - 10 miles away but rather leave deliveries for the shielded.

I have 2 freezers, legacy of breastfeeding & catch cooking purées & tbh they are always stocked as usually we eat out a lot as a family. Also have a bread maker so getting through my mixes & soup maker which has come in handy.

tooties · 06/04/2020 13:02

Oh & local wine bar did deliveries which was nice.

Went to M&S yesterday & got everything we needed.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 06/04/2020 13:03

We are ok at the moment. We do our shop at the local butcher's and greengrocer's/baker's to avoid the supermarkets and so far, so good. We also had a supermarket delivery a few weeks back.

tooties · 06/04/2020 13:05

What fresh fruit last months?

I have herbs growing, plenty of frozen veg & tinned fruit. I'm a keen baker too & always have butter & cheese in the freezer not enough to last 3 months though

Egghead68 · 06/04/2020 13:06

I’ve never eaten so many potatoes before in my life.

PhoneLock · 06/04/2020 13:08

No problems at all. We didn't prep, stockpile or buy a little extra and it hasn't bitten us in the bum. I've only been in two shops since it all started and I haven't had any problems getting food. I think there was one thing on my list (oats) that I couldn't get in the first shop but it's been fine since.

cobwebsoncornices · 06/04/2020 13:08

We hunkered down for that week/ten days of craziness around lockdown starting and began to work our way through the Brexit stash and the random portions of leftovers that I'd shoved in the freezer over the years and never looked at again.
One neighbour or another tends to be going shooing every other day or so and is happy to bring back fresh stuff so, with that and having been lucky enough to get a click & collect last week, we've been fine. Now I feel as though we're eating more or less normally again and my dilemma is whether to save the rest of the stuff in the freezer for if we have to self isolate or keep working through it and hope we can rely on neighbours or supermarket deliveries if that happens.
