Shielded group and online food shopping

ALemonyPea · 05/04/2020 21:30

Does anyone know how those in the shielded group can get slots for online food shopping. Is it just like everyone else, or is there somewhere to register to get priority?

You need to register as vulnerable on the gov. website. Make sure you tick that you need help getting food, that in theory means that Sainsburys will give you delivery slots. I have been trying to sort this for weeks though I’m afraid

ALemonyPea · 05/04/2020 21:34

I've already registered with them, thanks. Is it just Sainsbury's that are recognising the gov website info then?

Here's the link to register.
www.gov.uk/coronavirus-extremely-vulnerable
If you still can't get slots, contact the council.

LavenderQuartz · 05/04/2020 21:38

i dont think there are even enough slots available for all the vulnerable and shielded groups anyway

ALemonyPea · 05/04/2020 21:45

I looked on the Sainsbury site, and as I've never used them before, I can't register. Ho hum. I managed to get a Tesco one a few weeks ago for the 9th, will have to use the 80 allowable product items wisely.

My nans vulnerable and registered with sainsburys and is still unable to get a slot so even if you do get on the list it doesnt make much difference

whitedogpoo · 05/04/2020 21:59

Keep trying with Sainsbury’s, they release spots at random times there were none this am but got one at 2 this pm for wed.

ApplestheHare · 05/04/2020 22:00

My parents are shielded and have been able to book a regular, weekly slot with Asda. Think the gov/local councils seem to be coordinating. They were contacted by Asda to set it up having tried for weeks to get deliveries with anyone and everyone they could think of.

ALemonyPea · 05/04/2020 22:15

That's reassuring Apples. Hopefully I'll be able to get a regular slot

Dm is extremely vulnerable and has been contacted and offered slots by Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda. Went with Sainsbury’s as they were quickest to offer

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 23:37

It seems to vary so much. I know people in shielded group who have been offered regular slots, and others who are still waiting.

Didkdt · 05/04/2020 23:48

I've not been contacted I but I ticked the box that asked if I could get food supplies in the short term because I can what I can't get is a proper shop I wonder if that means I won't get a slot

UnrulySalvia · 05/04/2020 23:53

@Didkdt - we also ticked that box and haven't heard anything yet.. having said that I have seen posters on other threads who apparently ticked it and have still managed to get slots so 🤷. Maybe it depends on area? We're in London.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 00:47

I think there are half a million people in the shielded group,. They are probably still processing it all with the supermarkets.

Didkdt · 06/04/2020 01:25

There are 1.5 million in the shielded group.
Apparently EU data protection rules mean that supermarkets can't access your details on the list

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 01:28

@didkt I am in the shielded group. You give permission for supermarkets and others to contact you. But it has only happened for some in the shielded group. I am sure everyone will get the support eventually, but as of now it has only happened with some of the shielded group. One and a half million people is actually a lot of people.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 01:30

Sorry first comment should have said one and a half million in the shielded group, not half a million.

jmh740 · 06/04/2020 01:57

Oh is in the shielded group he registered on gov website, still cant get a delivery from tesco or asda though

Northernsoullover · 06/04/2020 02:01

Just wanted to echo what a previous poster said..my parents booked a Sainsbury's slot on Thursday for yesterday.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 02:02

@jmh740 Some people can, some can't. It seems to be slow to filter through. I was just explaining that it has nothing to do with data protection act.

480Widdio · 06/04/2020 02:09

I had an email from Waitrose saying they had identified me as being vulnerable,I didn’t contact them. They release the slots about two days in advance for the following week.Only allowed one slot a week,I am actually having one once a fortnight.

ALemonyPea · 06/04/2020 13:09

I can't get a slot with Sainsbury as I've never shopped with them so can't register as they're not accepting new customers.

Try Iceland, a friend told me they seem to have the most slots for vulnerable customers.

ALemonyPea · 10/04/2020 20:12

Just a quick update, I've received emails from Tesco, Asda and Iceland offering me priority slots.

Asda seemed the best one (and cheaper) as they offered weekly recurring slots and delivery is free. So big thumbs up to Asda.

DS1 is shielded, currently extremely vulnerable because he has just finished chemotherapy for blood cancer. His nurse specialist strongly recommended that the whole family should avoid going out for food or medication, but this goes against government advice which suggests that members of the family can go out and the vulnerable person should isolate themselves. DS is very anxious so we don't want to do this, and so far we have been lucky to get fortnightly delivery slots.

At the moment DS cannot get any priority slots, presumably because he ticked that someone could shop for him, but it makes it difficult for us. We also live rurally so supermarkets are limited, and it is impossible to shop when it is quiet. I have no idea what will happen after we have used the next delivery slot.
