Just had a big argument in public with people I don't know about the 2 meter rule!

I went for a walk this evening. I live very centrally in a fairly large city. Went into a shop, bought cigarettes (essential) and also bought a pack for a homeless man sitting outside the shop. We ended up having a chat. I sat 2-3 meters away from him on the pavement.

Some people, who lookalike little high, came out of the shop. They all went up to homeless man, and one of them leant right down in to his face to say something to him.

Omg!! I was very concerned for him! So I said (maybe shouted) 2 meters!!! The guy looked over at me and told me to shut up! I said no, you need to stand back to 2 fucking meters! his friends told me to keep my hair on!

Anyway, they went away. The homeless man said thanks, because it keeps happening to him. Just because he's homeless people think they can come up right to his face. Also a passer by, maintaining 2 meters, said he totally agreed with me, but I should be careful and look after myself . (the people who were high did look a bit threatening!).

Anyway as a result, I've made friends with the passer by. He's got a shop round the corner from my flat (Currently closes) and I've agreed to pop in and say hello when the sanctions are lifted. And I'm also going to drop off some hot cottage pie for the homeless man tomorrow.

These people thought I was completely nutts for shouting '2 meters!' Really?! Was I?!

I think it’s a bit rich to berate them for getting too close when you’ve just handed an item over that could well be carrying the virus. Glass houses springs to mind.

TabbyMumz · 06/04/2020 19:36

@ niugboo

"@TabbyMumzbecause many have refused accommodation."

I know that's usually the case, as in my County there is accommodation for each and every one of them, but they prefer to be homeless... but I thought at the moment it would be against the rules to just be out.

PhilCornwall1 · 06/04/2020 19:37

If you are addicted to nicotine then cigarettes really are essential items.

No they bloody aren't!! And I know what I'm talking about, as I'm a smoker. The really aren't that essential.

endlessstrife · 06/04/2020 19:55

It was a lovely gesture, and you were quite right.....but, you did put yourself at risk. It must be awful for homeless people at the best of times....but now, it must be hopeless, impossible to keep safe. You’re obviously very charitable, but do take care of yourself first, otherwise you won’t be able to help others n the future.

TabbyMumz · 06/04/2020 20:00

" It must be awful for homeless people at the best of times....but now, it must be hopeless, impossible to keep safe."

No. They just go to the accommodation allocated to them. Food will be delivered free of charge.

Localocal · 06/04/2020 20:14

You are doing your best, OP. Don't let the bastards get you down.

I think you have a good heart!!

Justploddingon · 06/04/2020 20:50

I think you probably made the homeless man's day a bit more bearable by having a chat and buying him some cigarettes Smile

Justploddingon · 06/04/2020 20:51

Philcorwall but it's ok for everyone to drink alcohol. No different imo

amispeakingenglish · 06/04/2020 20:55

You are right to shout, I have arguments every time I go out either dog walking or shopping What the F is wrong with some people??? One person was so close today at co op tills they actually touched me and as I paused to say something an old lady bumped into me!! I was very worried about her being so close to me. Some people queue with 2m gap outside shops and then shop as normal!!!!

Also have witnessed 2 , separate incidents, obviously care in the community people behaving in very unsafe manner, one was coughing constantly and no elbow or hand. Had no idea of what a queue was and got really really close to people, manager of shop escorted her out when she went it. I watched all this from a distance. Why are the care workers allowing people out alone, she was at risk, and was putting others at risk. It's about safety.

TabbyMumz · 06/04/2020 21:00

"Why are the care workers allowing people out alone, she was at risk, and was putting others at risk. It's about safety."

They arent locked in. That's why its "care in the community". They are in the community you know. They dont get care 24/7.

ravenmum · 07/04/2020 09:31

You get the same issue with children - parents going out with their children, who run right up to other people in the street.
Then you have the same issue with people who are not in a care home, but also not really mentally well or able enough to keep 2m away from people. Some of whom are clearly even posting on MN and getting a lot of flak for it.
The lockdown is about risk minimising, not risk elimination.

sjonlegs · 07/04/2020 16:15

I personally think you did right, albeit giving the bloke cigarettes probably wasn't too wise (I thought all homeless had been homed!) .. there are a lot of people out there paying no attention whatsoever to the 'rules' though. It's I was taking the dog for a walk with my daughter yesterday - literally have to go over one road and down another to enter the large wood and a woman on her phone on the main road, was heading straight towards us. I stopped and headed in on the pavement (narrow pavement) and couldn't cross the road as it's a main one and was busy with traffic (despite everything - yes I know some think it's just a 'holiday') plus she was alone and I was trying desperately to maneuver a large mad dog and an 11 year old girl. I said 'excuse me- space ' loudly. She completely ignored me - I then coughed VERY LOUDLY and ran past shielding my daughter! This woman looked at me as if I'd gone mad and barely batted an eyelid. My daughter was horrified at me - and I know I shouldn't have done that (I'm perfectly well - as far as I know) but it worries me that some people are clearly clueless/think they're impervious! I have been so incredibly careful and vigilant - it makes my blood boil! RANT OVER

You're a hero

SoooTiredToday · 09/04/2020 07:01

I think it's a bit much to shout '2m' when you handed the man a pack of cigarettes that could kill him because a) cigarettes cause heart trouble, lung cancer, throat cancer, etc... and do absolutely kill.people b) the pack may have had covid-19 all over it. c) you yourself possibly broke the 2m rule handing him the cigarettes and possibly have coronavirus on you which you've now given him.

naughtycat · 09/04/2020 07:05

Scnchl....

I Know I'm a hero 😁 please you don't have to tell me, my community already love me so much and I am expecting an invite to the queens garden party summer 2021. It's soooooooo exciting Smile

naughtycat · 09/04/2020 07:23

So tired,....,I just realised that you were actually being serious 😂🤣😂. Oh my god
I'm so lonely.
It's painful 😣
But I would rather be alone. Prancing around stokes croft, trying my best to do 2m.....than be friends with "sotired......."

Omg I bought cigarettes for a homeless person!!!! I should burn in hell!!! I'm so evil!! I'm spreading the virus!!! I'm making vulnerable homeless people sick by forcing them to smoke!!! My infected hands are intruding on the sterile conditions the homeless man was keeping until I turned up!!! An some one just phone the f@@king police please....quickly!!!!

OP posts:
naughtycat · 09/04/2020 07:26

Oh my god !!!! It's fucking terrible!!! We are all going to dieeeeeeeee!!!!!!

OP posts:
naughtycat · 09/04/2020 07:56

Oh my god!!! Many of these replies are literally making me laugh my head of!! Some of you actually believe that ALL homeless people have been given hotel accommodation for the duration of the crisis??! They haven't!!! Some people think I am putting homeless people at risk of copd or lung cancer by giving them cigarettes......haha I'm only giving people what they are already doing! I'm not some dodgy dealer. Some people think I'm putting homeless man at risk of virus by handing him cigarettes.....my hands are spotless, continuously covered in alcohol gel, I live alone, I rarely leave my flat......to get ciggies like any other grocery you have to take a tiny risk!!!

Oh my god, this thread is really hilarious!!

Thank you to all the really nice people who get me! I'm not running around town carefree of who I infect! I'm being super careful, I never go out, totally isolated!! But when I did pop out I was kind to a homeless person.

The rest of you can get lost Grinyour either under the opinion that my behaviour was due to wanting to be some kind of hero, or you believe I am definitely carrying the plague and I'm completely stupid and I'm spreading iit to all vulnerable people in Bristol.......oh and also, I had absolutely no idea smoking is bad?! Copd?! Lung cancer?! 😂!!!!

Get a grip people please 😂
