Private nurseries and childminders

They don’t shut for six weeks in summer. So in a situation where we could in theory reopen schools but no point just to shut them again, might we see childminders and private nurseries opening ahead of September?

Clutching at straws here but humour me Grin

No it’s not going to happen. I’ll be surprised if schools open in September

I think childminders may be among the first to open because we are smaller settings. Of course, many of us are already open for key workers.

There was debate prior to the shut down whether we would, or not, be included for that reason. Scottish childminders were open to all, not sure if that's changed since.

However, we shall see!

@Tanith that’s interesting... fingers crossed

I'm not a religious woman but I'm going to say a fucking prayer for this.

glitterelf · 05/04/2020 18:16

I truly hope we are able to open before September as I'm currently open for key workers only and my hours are completely all over the place.

There’s going to be a lot of unhappy employers if we’re all deemed ‘ok’ to go back say end of June and private nurseries and summer camp aren’t allowed to reopen.

Private nurseries (in Scotland anyway) are in such a quandary - private businesses who have had to furlough employers but governed by education policy.

I can see this falling into a grey area and they’re being a delay/lobbying as the furlough scheme will stop but the Scottish government won’t let them reopen until the schools so back

TempsPerdu · 05/04/2020 18:25

Nurseries are likely to open before schools imo. Would free up many parents to return to work, plus they are smaller, more flexible settings, young children are the group least at risk of complications from the virus and nurseries have a different, usually younger, staff demographic. Still not expecting it to be for quite a while though!

Yes I think things will open again sooner than we think. The government will have to take the economy, mental health, education etc into account. I think schools will open in June.

@bobbityboop I love your clarity of expression Grin

There’s definitely a case for it. But all bets are off really...
