Has anyone seen liquid hand soap recently

I’ve been looking for some this week and there appears to be none. The boots website even says they won’t be getting any further stock. Is there a supply issue?

The body shop have liquid soap and I’ve just ordered some from neals yard along with a hand sanitiser Smile also you could try Holland and Barrett

Lonelykettleshed · 04/04/2020 08:27

M&S food hall when I shopped yesterday.

kevintheorangecarrot · 04/04/2020 08:30

I got a couple from Aldi last week.

LittleLittleLittle · 04/04/2020 08:36

@PertEllaTitsahoyva tip I got decades ago when I use to visit the MSE forums was to use bubble bath or shower gel if you cannot get liquid hand soap as it is the same thing apart from the colour and smell. (I use bars of soap when traveling as they aren't liquid)

I also read that using antibacterial soap isn't necessary and actually can be worse for you due to drying your hands out. Dry cracked skin is more prone to infection. Just wash your hands properly with normal soap. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to do it.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 04/04/2020 08:47

Thanks little I use bar soap, but we have a couple of liquid soaps in the downstairs loo that dont actually contain any soap and as C19 is a virus any antibacterial properties are useless too.

So I guess my real question is does non soap handwash do anything against viruses? Iirc, actual soap disperses the fatty layer holding the virus together- does nonsoap handwash do the same?

I made a bee-line for the gift section ( soap&glory et al) at Boots when their dispenser soaps section was empty.
Paid more than I wanted to though.

emmathedilemma · 04/04/2020 08:53

I've got it on my online shop today. It was showing as various types in stock so hope it arrives!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 04/04/2020 09:05

I don't understand why some people think bar soap is 'dirtier' than liquid handwash, because someone else will have touched the soap before them.

The bar soap was washed when they used it, it's washed again when you use it. Seems a lot cleaner than touching the pump of the handwash bottle.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 04/04/2020 09:31

There was a similar thread before where someone claimed they had soap to wash their soap Grin

So long as it contains a surfactant it should. If you can use it to clean your hands if they’re greasy then yes.

mogtheexcellent · 04/04/2020 09:36

Loads in my local tesco Express. They are fully stocked apart from hand sanitizer, flour and pasta.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/04/2020 09:40

I use bar soap in the bath but prefer liquid soap dispensers elsewhere as they are less messy on sinks. If anyone is after some nice soap of either type (Glycerine soap bars, these are the only ones we’ve found which don’t kick off DHs eczema), we usually get ours from a farmers market but he’s doing mail order.

It’s more hygienic in my view, as I’m not contaminating the rest of the bottle of liquid hand wash when I pump the dispenser. You touch the entire bar of soap when you use it, how do you sanitise it after? Might be okay when you live alone but with others? Covid aside, I definitely don’t want to clean myself with the same bar of soap someone’s just touched after they’ve used the toilet.

The pump on liquid handwash is the bit that can be an infected surface. An infected person can pass a virus from the pump. They also can from a tap handle.

A soap bar is completely washed every time it is used - literally, its entire surface is washed off. Soap bars are self cleaning.

The other difference is that hand wash is not soap, it is detergent. Detergent is drying on skin, so hand washes contain additives to make your skin 'feel' soft. These are designed to not rinse off and can cause problems for people with sensitive skin. Soap bars (apart from Dove bars which are also a synthetic detergent) are actual soap and will rinse off completely.

I’ve been following the availability of various things on the Tesco order system with interest. Things are definitely getting better. A lot better. Situation as of this morning:-

Toilet roll - about half available - generally the more expensive makes - including a 24 pack
Liquid hand soap - about half available including a couple of carex - lots of “posh” makes available
Hand gel - none (which is surprising as where are people going to need it!)
Pasta - available but only up to 1kg size
Rice - available but only up to 500g size
Flour - plain available, self raising not available

This blog about liquid soap vs bar soap is interesting.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 04/04/2020 10:23

I haven't seen any for over 2 weeks at various supermarkets.

Makeitgoaway · 04/04/2020 10:28

Our Lidl had it's usual stock of hand soap yesterday afternoon. In fact it had its usual stock of everything, even parecetomol and loo roll. The only thing missing was penne pasta, but they had spaghetti.

I am coming to the view that I "should" go back to bars of soap to avoid the plastic bottles but they do make a mess and sharing a bathroom with 3 adult males, I know it's likely to look unpleasant, although I don't believe it's any less hygienic, it will look it iyswim.

HarrietOh · 04/04/2020 10:35

Plenty in Tesco when I was there last Monday

Clavinova · 04/04/2020 10:38

Only posh stuff in Waitrose - Argan+

I wouldn't have bought it normally but it is lovely. I use my wrist on the dispenser and spray dettol on it as well if one of us has been to the shops.

Ginfordinner · 04/04/2020 10:43

I forecast a rise in the sale of soap dishes.

Runmybathforme · 04/04/2020 10:44

Use shower gel, there is still loads of it about .
I prefer liquid soap, but recent studies show that bar soap actually kills more germs.

FamilyOfAliens · 04/04/2020 11:03

Covid aside, I definitely don’t want to clean myself with the same bar of soap someone’s just touched after they’ve used the toilet.

Most people flush the toilet and put the seat down before they wash their hands so the flush will be covered in their germs anyway. Unless you spray down the entire toilet area before you use it, there will always be germs from previous users.

Hedgehog26 · 04/04/2020 11:05

Asda by me yesterday had loads

It is no less sanitary than using liquid soap. You wash your hands, rinse the soap and put it in the soap dish to dry.

sandragreen · 04/04/2020 11:14

Plenty in my local tesco and in M&S
