Hi everyone, I hope your all well and safe. Ive never posted before, but I've been following like everyone else the developments over the last few months of covid 19. As of yet the government have said as its a new disease they still don't know much about it, thinking that it affected the elderly or people with respiratory issues. As of recent events we now know its not just the elderly and vulnerable people. Its our younger and our elder generation who are healthy with no health pre health conditions who are contracting this disease and many are dying within days or weeks. Some people say when they contract it, they have mild symptoms who are healthy. Other people who have no conditions are saying its like the devil pressing on them. Those who say they have recoved from the disease have said that they still feel weak with respiratory problems. The government have said its not flu. Seasonal flu does unfortunately kill hundreds of people a year. This is no flu. It is killing people who are perfectly healthy. There not just contracting the disease and recovering, many are. But as you can see thousands arnt across the world. Someone I spoke to recently said to me, we've hadcvmany deaths of seasonal flu. But we don't shut down whole countries across the world. Something doesn't make sense to me. Sorry if I'm going on a bit. My main issue is this. Why are healthy people dying within days of feeling unwell, to dying within days or a week. No one on the news or internet is reporting this, this is diustubing and worrying. Please can someone answer for me. Thank you. X

I think you are asking about the pathology of the disease. Because it is new there aren't definitive answers, but here are a few things I have gleaned:

  • The majority (but not all) of those who suffer severe symptoms or for whom it is fatal are elderly or have underlying health conditions that make them vulnerable. This is the same as you would expect with flu. Sadly, healthy young people also die of flu occasionally.
  • Some people have undiagnosed health conditions. A lot of people are pre-diabetic, have low vitamin D levels at the end of winter, are unfit...
  • Unlike flu, the very young do not appear to have increased vulnerability to Covid-19.
  • There is some indication that increased exposure to the virus increases the severity of symptoms.
  • inflammation in the lungs is a significant cause of respiratory distress in this disease. Some ICU patients who have recovered appear to have permanent lung damage. A small America study also noted that in rare cases it causes inflammation in the brain (encephalitis). Inflammation is a normal immune response, so is indicative of the body fighting the virus, but the immune system can find itself overwhelmed. I am not clear on whether this inflammation is an immune response (probably) or the result of the virus interfering with cell function. Either way, when inflammation interferes with organ function it can be fatal.
  • The pathology of loss of taste and smell senses is not yet understood.
  • The treatment available does not kill the virus. It helps the patient to survive while their own immune system kills the virus by keeping fevers down and enabling people to breathe. This takes time and one of the reasons for the lockdown is to ensure our health service is not overwhelmed by too many people needing intensive care at the same time.

Take care of yourself Goddess, and try not to take the more brusque responses to heart. Mumsnet is a huge forum with many users. Just like in life, some are more tactful than others. And some like a few drinks on a Friday night so might be a bit more lairy than they would usually be.

Goddess1234 · 03/04/2020 23:54

All these things that I have not done, genevieva, waterlego, thank you. Waterlego ha its OK. Maybe its the prosecco speaking. My nan used to say the old saying, if you nothing nice to say then say nothing at all. X

I have been on here on and off, under various guises, over three kids' pregnancies, births, bf, pnd and more, since 2008 and I really think there have been some complete and utter cunts on here this month - as I said earlier this evening, I know in Lockdown you need a hobby but ffs how hard can it be to stop being a twat for 5 minutes and show someone some empathy. Cake Brew Thank God for the woolly hugs and decent posters. I don't mind robust opinions but there's being sarky and then being a cunt just cos you're anonymous.
It's not okay OP but it's not representative. Warmest wishes to you. If it does get rough for you at stupid o'clock PM me X

TheLadyAnneNeville · 03/04/2020 23:59

They are reporting it. Two nhs nurses have died today.

MMN123 · 04/04/2020 00:00

@waterlego - I know BMI over 40 is on the list of things that put you at risk. I’m fat so need to spend the coming months avoiding the virus, losing weight and increasing my cardiovascular health. Trouble is I got fat because my knees are knackered so now when I go for a brisk walk, even for half an hour, I wake up in pain in the night. But I think I’ll just have to dose up on painkillers and plough on - better to knacker my knees and improve my heart so I’m in better shape to fight it when it comes!!

Greenpop21 · 04/04/2020 00:04

OP, young healthy people are not invincible, they get cancer, they die from heart attacks and meningitis. It happens.

Nameisthegame · 04/04/2020 00:06

Don’t feel bad not understanding it’s complicated.
1.virus load- building up of exposure to virus like grains in a bottle
2.genetics - some people will just have a weakness to it
3.Age - the older you get the weaker your immune system can be
4.over all health - your already sick or been sick , your over weight, smoker etc
5.mutations in the virus - generally viruses don’t want to be deadly as they need the host to like so super deadly ones tend to die out.

We don’t have a immunity or vaccine for this, that is why it’s become a pandemic and it’s very contagious so more people are getting it. The reason you might here more about healthy people dying or in severe condition is because it is not as common as people with a underlying health condition or elderly xxx

Baker1985 · 04/04/2020 00:08

Yes people die from flu slot of people but flu doesn't spread as fast as this so hospitals aren't under so much pressure with flu. How do people not understand that this is spreading much faster than flu hence strain on hospitals hence many more deaths.

Nameisthegame · 04/04/2020 00:10

@Baker1985
6.strain on healthcare people can’t receive the correct treatment because or care because there are so many people infected on top of people who would normally need medical help.

waterlego · 04/04/2020 00:13

MMN Ouch, that sounds tough 😟 I think you’re right that knackered knees are ‘better’ than a knackered heart and lungs, but it’s a shame you have to make that choice at all! Sounds like you’re making great efforts to keep fit.

Thinkingabout1t · 04/04/2020 00:14

I hope you and your parents stay well, OP. And I very much sympathise with your fears and confusion.

It find it strange and frightening, too. My rational brain knows that this was reported at the beginning of the year in China and was spreading fast and was obviously going to reach here. And that it's a new disease in humans so we don't yet know how to control it.

And that humans got it by trapping wild animals, keeping them in filthy conditions and eating them as delicacies. Human brutality and stupidity, nothing mysterious.

Like many diseases, it can kill young and old, but the old or unwell are easiest for it to kill.

I know all that, but at the same time I sort of can't believe this is happening. It feels like science fiction, not our everyday life. And that feels unsettling.

Goddess1234 · 04/04/2020 00:16

Thank you so much all the things I have not done. Its ok, as i said to waterlego maybe its the wine. Its not nice, but its ok. Im 42, i think i should be able to handle people being not very nice and rude. Although i think its the way i worded it. Im rubbish at writing. I think it is anxiety. Of reading what has been going on. I was watching a programme and thry said that a lot of people have become more anxious and have seen more people effect there mental health issues. And are concearned that isolating will affect many people. In 2008 i was on here around the same Time. Now have 3 boys. I came off here after my separation with my ex husband and haven't joined again until recently. My youngest is now nearly 4 wrigging around waking up every 5 seconds. He's been like it since he's green born. That's why I'm burning the candle at midnight!.

Young people die from seemingly cruel twists of fate all the time. It's not a conspiracy. Young deaths are being reported as individuals as it shocks people.

waterlego · 04/04/2020 00:21

I’ve been here on and off since 2008 too! (Different name back then).

Your youngest sounds lively Goddess ❤️ I have no excuse for being up so late so I’m heading off to bed now as doing a virtual yoga class in the morning and then teaching a weights session for some friends on FB 🙂

Thinkingabout Your post really resonates.

Take care all 💐

Snorkelface · 04/04/2020 00:21

Goddess1234 - to put 'flu' in perspective I remember the 1989 flu outbreak in the UK. 60% of the population got it and about 25,000 people died in the UK which was huge. People of all ages with no known (very important) underlying conditions died very quickly. The elderly were particularly vulnerable as always, as were people with all the same pre-existing conditions being listed now with Covid 19. In addition a higher than normal number of children were also severely effected - unlike with Covid 19. They just don't know enough about Covid 19 yet.

Island35 · 04/04/2020 00:21

Hi OP

I hear your anxiety and I think quite a few of us swing from 'we will be ok' to 'OMG what's going on'

Seasonal flu is predictable, we know it exists and there are vaccines for the strain each year. My understanding is that Coronavirus is not new but the strain which is called Covid-19 is new, unpredictable and there are lots of questions where experts are having to say unknown because of this.
Some have likened this to the flu but it has also been reported that it is way worse than the flu and it is the combination of these factors which has resulted in the Lockdown of many different countries.

My advice is to step away from unnecessary news only making yourself aware of the pure facts in your local news once a day. Order online if you can or choose a quieter time of the day to shop. 3PM on Sunday surprised me as being quiet. I normally shop with a list but I've not bothered, picked what is available and then planned meals on my return. It may take time but it will pass.

It kills those who can't use proper grammar

Sorry about the misspellings, I am normally good at spelling. I'm half asleep. I've been awake since 5:30 am.

Goddess You have no need to justify yourself. (You must be bloody knackered though! 😭)

Moving You seem like an incredibly kind and helpful person, well done. Why not give yourself a pat on the back? 😒

AllTheseThingsThatIHaveNotDone · 04/04/2020 00:27

Bless you. I remember those days. My 6 year old still gets into bed with me and kicks me non-stop. When I used to be on here while bf someone was always up to hand hold - my favourite was a fellow mum who said she was so tired she had tried to breastfeed the duvet! Grin
I am up at silly o'clock eg 4am as I often get insomnia - I have found reading the news has made it worse so am doing milky drinks and cake and some David Sedaris I think. My kids and I's body clocks are out of sync/we risk going nocturnal so need to turn in. Take care x

peterlon1 · 04/04/2020 00:35

Hi all ppl are talking about it on here but in different threads about different issues. It isn't a new virus it is just slightly different from MERS and SARS they are all Coronavirus this one just causes Covid 19 but they all atttack the respiratory system and it is this that is the downfall of the likes of 1.2 million of us who are immunosuppresed, cancer patients, COPD patients, Litchens and Lupus basically any disease that effects the immune system. or the very old or very young as their immune systems are either failing or not yet strong enough.

But i came on to let ppl kn ow that if they received leter from Gov or registered on website the information has now been shared with the SM's and you should have email to say you can book delivery slot. have a good night everyone.

Goddess1234 · 04/04/2020 00:36

Waterlego. Good luck with your session in the morning. Your a better woman than me. I say to my other half I'll exercise tomorrow then another day goes by. Me and my son tried the Joe wicks pe the other day. I had sore legs the next day. That's terrible. Yes but its OK. I'm so used to being knackered, just like every other parent. Thanks for your opinion and advice. My name is Kerry by the way, nice to meet you. Goodnight. X

Stella8686 · 04/04/2020 00:40

I have also read (like a previous post said) that you may get it worse from a larger exposure.

Example:

Scenario 1
Someone has picked up the virus and passes it to you on day 2 of their exposure. 1st Infected person doesn't have a high concentration you contract the virus from them but don't get strong symptoms.

Scenario 2

Someone is in the later stage of the illness and are sick with a higher concentration of the virus. You catch it off this person at this point. You get a stronger infection dose

So passing it around in the early incubation period less risky

Catching it off someone very sick with it more risky

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/04/2020 00:40

Part of it is simply a numbers issue. Only a tiny % of young people will die but if lots of people get it then even a tiny % is more than 1.

If 1% die that = 1:100
If 0.1% die = 1:1000
etc.
So if the mortality rate for young people was a 0.001% that still means that 1:100,000 of young people who get the disease die.
