So I've had a cold since last friday, so one week now. It felt like a typical cold, I had lots of sneezing and a running nose, and slight tickling throat. No temperature apart from slightly hot during the night. Absolutely no cough. I still havent left the house just in case. The cold seemed to go on Monday and I have been feeling fine since apart from the odd sneeze and sniffing my nose. Then this morning I opened up my essential oils-peppermint and an orange one, and I couldnt bloody smell them. It was the weirdest feeling, usually these essential oils are mega strong and I can smell them easily. Is this a usual occurrence for after a common cold anyway? I obviously will continue to stay at home just in case, but am suddenly in a major panic as no smell is one of the signs. My throat feels all thick and tight now but think that may be the anxiety of having no smell!

Not much of answer for you but it could be your cold lingering, or sinusitis, or, indeed, the virus. It's hard to know.
Just manage with cold/flu remedies and try not to worry. If you think it's covid, obviously, self-isolate.

Could be hayfever,(It can start at any age) I had similar earlier this week.but took some antihistamines and it cleared up.

Mojitomogul · 03/04/2020 21:03

@Heresme did you have no smell?? That's making me feel slightly calmer as I have been out in the garden.. never really had hayfever before though

It pretty common to loose your sense of smell when you have illnesses that affect your nose. Have you lost your sense of taste as well?

Mojitomogul · 03/04/2020 21:09

Not really, I had a ham and mustard samdwich earlier and the mustard didnt make my eyes stream as it usually does! So I thought that was odd, but could still taste that it was mustard, and just had strawberries and can taste them although not as sweet as usual

Isnt the loss of your sense of smell supposed to be a recognised symptom of the virus now?

GirlCalledJames · 03/04/2020 21:10

My SIL has a confirmed case and her only symptom was loss of smell and taste.

Mojitomogul · 03/04/2020 21:15

I know that's what's worrying me. I will stay inside. Just scared the symptoms will get worse but had a sniffly cold for one week now so just dreading if it now gets worse or any new symptoms

I understood that it is a symptom for people who are very lucky and otherwise asymptomatic? I might be wrong, but I definitely read that. I would self isolate for a week to avoid passing it on to others who get the full version.

Mojitomogul · 03/04/2020 21:25

Just worries me I live with my mum who is asthmatic, I would be beside myself if I had given it to her. Shes showing no symptoms and I've had my cold for a week so hopefully it is just a side effect of my cold. Ahh. Just panicking.

No loss of smell bit rest of symptoms, more than likely allergies/hayfever.
