Summer Holiday 2020

How likely do you think it that we'll be enjoying overseas holidays this year?

We have a flights to Canada booked on 31 July that I'm 50:50 will be cancelled. DH thinks I'm mad and that this will be a distant memory by then 🤨

We haven't booked our accommodation yet and if cancelled we'd not be covered by insurance now yet we do need somewhere to stay if driving from Vancouver to Banff in 4 months time...

Mumsnet opinions?

I’d say your 50/50 is over optimistic so his is bonkers.

I’d put the chances of anyone going on holiday overseas in July at less than 20%.

blossombabies · 03/04/2020 19:42

sadly i din't think there will be any non essential travel in the next six months

bigmamama · 03/04/2020 19:43

We have our first summer holiday as a family of 4 booked for mid June and I don't think we'll be going but my dh also thinks this will be over by then... i mean I hope he's right but I think it will be cancelled and refunded next month !

Emcont · 03/04/2020 19:44

Majorca booked for June 22nd. Totally not expecting to to!

GreyGardens88 · 03/04/2020 19:44

Flights booked for Thailand at the end of September, who knows but fingers crossed

cheeseandcrackers · 03/04/2020 19:44

Don't book a accommodation. Very much doubt you'll be going but if you do, there'll be plenty of accommodation available as no one else will be booking now either

HairyFloppins · 03/04/2020 19:46

I have flights booked to JFK and coming back from Chicago in Aug. I have resigned myself to the fact we won’t be going.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/04/2020 19:46

I'm booked for July. I don't think international leisure travel will be happening at all this year.

Autumnwindinthewillows · 03/04/2020 19:48

We have an anniversary staycation booked for end June - still not sure if we'll be able to go. As most local events are already cancelled there will be nothing to do and nowhere to go so hoping in a way it gets cancelled and we get our money back so we can go next year (hope to God this is over by then!!!)

Seventyone72seventy3 · 03/04/2020 19:50

We have a week at the seaside in Italy in July. I'm still optimistic even if I might have to wear a mask on the beach!

Aceventura20000 · 03/04/2020 19:54

Don’t forget all the hotels in these areas are currently shut. It’s going to be a hell of an operation to get all the hotels, flights, local infrastructure etc to open up and be back to normal for people to enjoy their holidays. Not to mention the lack of insurance cover for many if you risk it.

I just can’t see it.

Iamclearlyamug · 03/04/2020 19:55

Transferred my cancelled flight from March 29th to the end of May, know that won't happen so will transfer them again.

I really need to stay positive, as I can't bear to think my fiance and I might not see each other for 6 or 7 months 😭😭 it's the only thing that keeps me sane and ticking along

nellodee · 03/04/2020 19:57

Does anyone remember that early press conference following a cobra meeting? When I think it was Chris Whitty answered a question about whether people should cancel holiday plans? I think his answer was about how stopping flights was totally pointless, didn't achieve anything and we should all go on booking holidays, because if it spread widely, then the virus would be everywhere anyway, and there would be no reason not to carry on with your holiday to Benidorm.

Yeah.

It was all bullshit.

TravellingSpoon · 03/04/2020 19:57

I am not feeling too optimistic about my family holiday to tenerife in the summer. I have worked overtime for months and now it will probably be in vain.

CathyandHeathcliff · 03/04/2020 20:18

What do we think about a UK holiday at the end of July? We’ve booked a cottage near the sea.

brentwoodbaby · 03/04/2020 20:43

Thanks all. I will be so disappointed not to go- like many others we've saved a long time to do a 'big trip' and if it's not this summer would have to be Xmas or next summer as it's the only time we can both get the same length of leave from our jobs and kids school not affected.

We are lucky to have our family together as well as our health. All that's important even if it feels a bit rubbish.

Week in the Canaries booked for May half term with Tui. Just hope we can get a refund, we really aren't able to rebook for a later date.

ProfessorPootle · 03/04/2020 21:30

We’re booked for Disneyland April 2021 and I’m not sure it’ll go ahead. Don’t think there’ll be any overseas holidays until much later in the year (Oct onwards) if at all. This is gonna drag on for 18m of intermittent lockdowns.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 03/04/2020 21:59

Turkey June 20. According to EasyJet email I got its planned to go ahead 😂 I'm more than doubtful

Dinnertime22 · 03/04/2020 22:05

I have just cancelled our June holiday.
I could have rearranged for next year, but have just left it.
Again there maybe issues with insurance and the uncertainty of it all in general.
I know there are more important issues, but I am still disappointed.

paininthepoinsettia · 03/04/2020 22:09

@Chesney we are in the same boat and I'm desperately hoping that we will get away. I follow Turkey updates daily and they are not on official lockdown, as Erdogan insists that shops must have the choice to stay open in order for the economy to survive. I'm hoping once it heats up a bit next month that the virus will die wishful thinking.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 03/04/2020 22:32

@paininthepoinsettia I'd love to go! We've only paid the deposit. Balance due end of April I think.

DH is happy to just loose the deposit as opposed to paying it all and then claiming it back. But a tiny part of me is clinging to the hope that we may get to go ...

Plump82 · 03/04/2020 22:40

We're due to fly to the canaries end of Aug. I've mentally written it off. And i wont be able to get time off worl after then so doubt we'll be away any where this year. My partners parents fly out to Tenerife around the same time and they're convinced theyll be going.

Snowflakes1122 · 03/04/2020 22:54

CathyandHeathcliff- we are keeping our UK cottage break at the end of July. I’m actually really looking forward to it more than ever with all this rubbish going on, it’ll be a much needed holiday.
If things aren’t looking good nearer the time I will push it back to a new date.

Missanneshirley · 03/04/2020 22:56

Cancelled Majorca in July, before we lost any money phew.
Tentatively considering a UK break in October hols now but not even sure about that!
