Threat of disciplinary...advice needed

welshowl · 03/04/2020 16:35

My 26 yr old partner is employed within the public sector and has been advised to self isolate (no symptoms) due to having one of the listed health conditions.

He received a phone call from his line manager today to say if he leaves the house in the time he is isolating to look after his livestock, he could face disciplinary!!

Is this possible? We are shocked with the bully like attitude.

Exercise is allowed once a day and livestock care is classed as essential travel.

I think this is a good case for a grievance.

Advice please, thanks.

How would the LM even know? I'd be tempted to carry on looking after the livestock and ignore.

technically if he is one of the shielded group, he should be at home and not travelling AT ALL, not even for essential travel or food shopping etc, that is what they are trying to do with the shielded group, stay completely behind closed doors for 12 weeks.

Having said that, you obviously have to look after the livestock. If there is no-one else, then he doesn't have much choice.

It sounds like they are extremely pissed off that he is absent. Why on earth should they care? Livestock makes me think you live somewhere remote. Would they know?

LM wouldn't know if he continued I guess and we yes we do live rurally.
It's just a worry that he's been threatened with a disciplinary, it's not like he's partying or seeing friends, he's looking after his cattle. There's a few workers at the farm but no need to have contact with them.
We can't understand the stance work are taking!

I’m fairly certain you can’t legally be threatened with a disciplinary. A disciplinary is action taken by an employer after an employee has demonstrably broken the terms of their contract. A threat by a manager doesn’t constitute a contract and can be seen as bullying.

Perhaps your DH could email his manager to ask for clarification of the telephone call, and get it in writing.

Good idea.
