Is anyone else angry and embarrassed right now ?

For the developed and resourced country that we are, we are potentially going to be overtaking Italy and Spain by the looks of things.
Australia and other nations have death rates in double figures. They were smart to close borders and even close regions. Canada the same. Denmark, etc. The list goes on. South Korea have the situation under control.
We were warned about this. I feel like majority of those deaths could have been avoided.

You know what really pisses me off?

All these people that are so angry and embrassed, what are you actually doing long term?

Presumably you're accepting the help the government are handing out? Which is unprecedented in any other country - before people bleat about a UBI that is of no help to a vast vast swathe of the country - a £1000 handout to DH and I each, wouldn't even cover half of our combined salary and at my wage of £21.5k a year you cannot put me in the higher earner category.

Spain shut down ages ago yes, but in the words of our Spanish au pair who chose to stay here - they're fucked for far longer than we are, even if we overtake them in death toll in the immediate, long term they'll see far more deaths.

Italy - people are literally starving to death, rioting and looting has started.

So all of you who are so angry and sad - when this is over are you going to pack up and leave? Or are you going to work on making Britain great again?

Am I happy? Am I impressed?

I'm fucking neutral. I'm not a specialist in anything to do with this UNPRECEDENTED PANDEMIC. Or the economy, or microbiology.

Would I rather be in the UK than pretty much anywhere else right now? Yep.

There are a lot of excellent, well researched replies on this thread that have helped me to question my original post and helped me see things more rationally and calmly.

I take back my last post op & thank you for admitting this. I certainly don't know what will happen but others don't either.

What may be to come sends chills down my spine.

You still haven't enlightened us but I've noticed you've changed tack to "may".

Cam77 · 03/04/2020 17:50

China, Korea, Singapore, Japan believed that the "right time" for restrictions was right at the beginning, to, er, stop people dying. And who'd have guess it actually worked pretty well.

canhelenabonhamcarterchokeme · 03/04/2020 17:51

i’m not happy with how the govenment have handled it. take denmark for example, they went into lockdown way before us.

Balhammom · 03/04/2020 17:52

@Cam77

Many come and tell some of the scientists i work with that they are “blathering about herd immunity” in person.

I’m sure they’d love to know what your qualifications are.

Wehttam · 03/04/2020 17:52

Justfrustrated you may say that now but once the rabble start to get restless it’s going to be a very rocky road.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 03/04/2020 17:53

I'm very angry that anyone who's taken this seriously for months was shouted down as a doom-monger and made to feel hysterical. Look where that's got us.

mochajoes · 03/04/2020 17:54

what should have happened was advice to all travelling back from northern Italy should have been to self isolate for 14 days. so infected could be found easily and their chance of spreading minimised.

Again how would this have been enforced?

helpfulperson · 03/04/2020 17:55

I'm sure the Gov emergency planning depts will be delighted once this is over and all these experts offer to take over. And start standing for Parliament, since they obviously know best how to run the country.

Teddypops · 03/04/2020 17:55

I blame China! Their massively underplayed figures.

It didn't seem like a massive deal considering that they have such a large population.

Maybe if it had been apparent from the start how big this was we could have been more prepared.

mochajoes · 03/04/2020 17:56

China, Korea, Singapore, Japan believed that the "right time" for restrictions was right at the beginning, to, er, stop people dying. And who'd have guess it actually worked pretty well.

So we should be more like China?

NewYearNewTwatName · 03/04/2020 17:56

the same as they were asking people returning from china?

we could have taken note of them when got off the plane and given advice and taken an address for where they would be self isolating. We didn't even do that with china though.

NewYearNewTwatName · 03/04/2020 17:59

I'm sure the Gov emergency planning depts will be delighted once this is over and all these experts offer to take over. And start standing for Parliament, since they obviously know best how to run the country

Well no, they could have taken advice from the experts around the world who were saying exactly the same though.

NewYearNewTwatName · 03/04/2020 18:01

TBF Even Jeremy Hunt was astounded at there actions, and pleaded with them to share their 'special science' with him and experts around the world so they understand why they were being such idiots.

mochajoes · 03/04/2020 18:02

we could have taken note of them when got off the plane and given advice and taken an address for where they would be self isolating.

and then what? Would every person be checked to see they were self isolating? Daily or every other day? what's the penalty for not self isolating?

Wehttam · 03/04/2020 18:03

mocha ok if you really want to know what I think could happen, here you go. I hope it doesn’t get to this stage but unless we have a miracle it’s inevitable.

Firstly lockdown will drag on way into the summer, meanwhile many once stable companies will collapse with massive unemployment numbers

Secondly, those struggling to get by will start to wonder why the divide has become so much greater between the haves and have nots. They will question why it is X on Facebook is perfecting their Yoga technique whilst still eating at Waitrose and they are stuck with the leftovers in Lidl which they spend hours queuing for and no WiFi because they can not afford to replace their broken tv or laptop.

Thirdly the NHS will buckle under the coming strain, rising crime and violence will mean people are coming in to hospitals with injuries from fighting and looting, couple this with a continual stream of COViD patients and you have a problem.

NHS staff will start fearing for their lives and refusing the work with COVID patients because of the risk involved, the parameters for who gets care and who doesn’t will broaden once more simply due to lack of staff and equipment.

By this point we reach autumn and the second wave comes.

Rinse and repeat until a vaccine is developed.

Sapphiresunrise · 03/04/2020 18:03

I don't really take kindly to being told that it's no surprise I live alone. I've not created this thread for unnecessary personal insults to be dished about. Be respectful to one another, keep to this topic, if you don't like it, close the thread.

OP posts:
mochajoes · 03/04/2020 18:04

@Wehttam so that all would be avoided by locking down earlier?

NewYearNewTwatName · 03/04/2020 18:04

mochajoes gosh is that a really such hard thing to think off? lots counties managed too.

But even without doing that, the majority would have done so, like the majority returning from China did, which is why before Italy we managed it better.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 03/04/2020 18:05

@ItsJustTheOneSwanActually you say be glad you are not in the USA. If you look your deaths per Million Population is over double that of the USA.

Cam77 · 03/04/2020 18:05

To all the the "everyone is an expert now brigade" take a look at this link. The problem with the British government isn't that they did not consult the experts it is they did not listen and act on what the vast majority of HEALTH and PANDEMIC experts were telling them .

It is explained very clearly on this article
which was published in The Guardian a day or two ago:
"Absolutely wrong’: how UK’s coronavirus test strategy unravelled

Sapphiresunrise · 03/04/2020 18:07

Anyone just heard the news about Australia ? So from what i've understood, unless you're an Austalian citizen or permanent resident, you need to leave ASAP ?

OP posts:
Sapphiresunrise · 03/04/2020 18:08

*with the exception of visiting medical staff.

OP posts:
mochajoes · 03/04/2020 18:08

@Sapphiresunrise I took that back in a later post & I do apologise.

BrooHaHa · 03/04/2020 18:09

Angry, I can see. But embarrassed? Being thrashed 15-nil in a world-cup qualifier might be seen as embarrassing. Having more deaths than other countries though? Not sure embarrassment really comes into it. I mean, the other countries aren't going to be laughing at us for our death toll are they? And even if they were, would it matter?
