Are you taking your DCs outside (i.e. leaving your home) for exercise?

Are you going out at all, for a cycle, walk or whatever? We still are. DD is 6 and we go either on the tag-a-long or occasionally the scooter, sometimes cycle then walk in the park for a short while, keeping well away from everyone else and touching nothing.

I'm getting nervous, though

Are you doing this? Or have you stopped going outside completely?

2 of my kids are happy playing in the garden for their exercise so we're not taking them out. Seems daft to force them as long as they're getting outside and running around. My eldest is 15 and there's really no exercise she'd be interested in in the garden. One of us has a daily walk with her - she also started couch 2 5k before this all kicked off so we're continuing with that and replacing every other walk with a walk/run.

Mascotte if you look at the legislation you are correct, you can not be prosecuted for exercising more than once.

However if you look at the very simple guidelines which all citizens are required to comply with it very clearly says exercise once per day.

We all have a choice as to whether be good community citizens and do what we have been clearly asked to do or whether to hide behind the law to do what we like.

Personally I think its irresponsible to keep telling people that the law doesn't say you can only exercise once a day.

We take our children out for a walk / scooter / cycle every day as we live on the entrance to a wide bridle path, and rarely see anyone.

Pre-lockdown, I’d have walked for a minimum of 1hr 20 each day, so the reduction is hard.

Mascotte · 03/04/2020 08:18

I have never before been called irresponsible for quoting the law 😂

Yes. About an hour a day unless it's raining. We have a very small garden and a toddler, and I'm finding that playing out in our garden is not enough to tire her out. Plus the mental health benefits of going for a walk and getting out of these 4 walls.

Bagelsandbrie · 03/04/2020 08:43

Yes we go out everyday. We live rurally and walk through the nearby fields (public footways but empty). We do have a garden but I would go insane not getting out of the house for a change of scenery.

BlueGheko · 03/04/2020 08:45

Daily cycles here, avoiding the cycle paths though as they're too narrow, road cycling only locally. Roads are deserted and we have a huge empty business park and industrial estate on our doorstep, not the most scenic but we're getting fresh air/keeping fit.

Yeah, I’ve been taking toddler DD for walks, good for both of us I think.

My DD is 18 and home from uni. One of the pleasures of my day now is going for a short local run with her each day. It's partly to support her health - she used to be very active but I suspect that has stopped at uni - and partly for me, I run every day anyway. We are not going as far as I normally would but that's fine.

We wash our hands when we come in, we move into the road to avoid dog walkers, we have a nice chat and see some signs of spring.

And as others say, it's good for our mental health. Mine especially. I am about at the end of my rope here and my run is keeping me about ok.

Yes I take my DC out into the fields next to our house a couple of times a week even though we are shielding my middle child due to a transplant. We see no-one except an occasional dog walker who we can stay at least 20m away from.
It’s important like others have said to get out into the fresh air, sunshine and to exercise the lungs. My only way to control this horror is to keep us all as healthy as possible so good sleep, good food, exercise and extra vitamins. Also I believe that stress plays a huge part in keeping us healthy and by getting out into the countryside 2-3 times a week I notice a huge difference in stress and niggles. They just dissipate as we cross the fields Smile

DH and DS go out for a bike ride every couple of days. DD is a baby so the garden is plenty big enough for her to crawl around in.

Tbh, as well as the exercise benefits I think it's good not to be stuck inside with the same people 24/7. Having time to myself when they are out, or when I go for my walk is saving my sanity!

TinyTear · 03/04/2020 09:29

yes, i live in a flat so we go every lunch time for half an hour or so to an open park to climb a tree or feed the ducks. take the skipping ropes...
the park is 5 minutes walk on quiet roads from my flat so i do it until we are not allowed

Phifedean123 · 03/04/2020 10:23

Yeah I try to take my two year old out once a day. We are in a flat with a tiny shared back yard. I take him on his trike or his reins because he is unfortunately a runner and I couldn't trust him to not touch people/everything 😒
