Are you taking your DCs outside (i.e. leaving your home) for exercise?

Are you going out at all, for a cycle, walk or whatever? We still are. DD is 6 and we go either on the tag-a-long or occasionally the scooter, sometimes cycle then walk in the park for a short while, keeping well away from everyone else and touching nothing.

I'm getting nervous, though

Are you doing this? Or have you stopped going outside completely?

Absolutely, 100%. We are semi rural though and walk in the fields. Some days we see no one but when we do there is enough time to give people a wide berth

scrivette · 02/04/2020 23:29

I took my eldest out to post a letter for the first time since the lockdown, he didn't want to go though as they have been happy playing in the garden. I have only been out to go food shopping.

We do Joe Wicks in the morning and Yoga in the afternoon so I am doing far more exercise than I was previously.

zzzz31 · 02/04/2020 23:30

@Mascotte Smile ok I think I will put my sane hat on again...

Yes (although not today as the kids begged for a “home day” ConfusedGrin) we walk a couple of empty streets to get to the wide path through the woods - we would normally walk the canal but the towpath is very narrow here so you couldn’t pass safely.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/04/2020 23:34

Well until they lock us down further people will still go out. Everyone will make their own choice. We don’t need more than the garden and house to exercise in and so we’ll stay here. My bf is currently ill with covid. She’s a healthy and fit hospital consultant. I’m just praying she’ll be ok. They need us to stay at home so we are staying at home.

PickAChew · 02/04/2020 23:38

Of course I am. 13yo Ds2 is autistic and looks forward to his daily walk, right now.

And no, going into our garden is not healthful exercise.

NeilTheBaby · 02/04/2020 23:38

Nope. We did once at the start and despite living in a village I've never seen so many people out walking the streets before! Since then we've stuck to having break time and lunch time in the garden.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/04/2020 23:42

Of course just going into your garden isn’t exercise. But it gives you fresh air and you can exercise there.

Pipandmum · 02/04/2020 23:44

I walk the dog and encourage my daughter to come too. Today I saw two families out - the mums were well apart but the seven kids they had between them were running around not keeping apart at all.

LilacTree1 · 02/04/2020 23:44

“ The so called “fresh air” is likely to have corona in it so we don’t go out just for the sake of it.”

So you’re not going out or opening windows for 18 months?

And for the next pandemic....?

milkysmum · 02/04/2020 23:49

Yes, I have 2 primary school aged children and we are keeping up the 'daily mile' at present that they had been doing at school with the hope of building this up to a longer jog/run if possible. I'm back at work next week but will still keep it up in the evenings as think it's really important.

bluechameleon · 03/04/2020 00:02

We've just come out of 2 weeks self-isolation and have been for a walk both days since. We have a park down the road so we've been there to run around for a bit. We haven't seen many other people and it has been easy to stay over 2 metres away so I'm not worried that it is risky.

nanbread · 03/04/2020 00:02

Yes, we're going to one of three local parks for about an hour a day to run around. All within closeish walking distance. We do have outdoor space but it's not very big and doesnt really get the sun at this time of year.

Kittywampus · 03/04/2020 00:07

Yes, we live in a flat so need to go for daily walks to preserve our sanity. Luckily we live on the edge of the city with plenty of open space around us.

SpokeTooSoon · 03/04/2020 00:11

I feel sorry for these children being kept in such confinement.

We walked past a friend’s house today, DD waved up at the window and her friend opened it to have a little chat. Poor child hasn’t been past her front door for two weeks.

Nobody in her house is vulnerable.

It’s completely irrational to be hiding away from a virus that is, statistically, highly unlikely to do you any harm.

Get outside. Keep your distance. Enjoy nature. Be normal.

crispycracker · 03/04/2020 00:21

You don't have to keep your kids locked up indoors.
A walk/cycle/run once daily is allowed and necessary for kids and us all.
We do that as well as spending as long as possible in the back garden.
Just keep 2m away from other people

MrsDeltaB · 03/04/2020 00:29

We've walked nearly every day after DH finished WFH, 2 adults, 3 girls and one dog. Luckily we are in a village where if you don't know everyone you know someone that knows them or that knows you. The better side of a small village. Only husband has gone every other or third day to shop for fresh, only buying what we need, and if it ain't there well we make do.

Having said all that. I stood out with the kids and village to applaud. I bit back a sob. For all of us. The fact it came to this. I'll confess to thinking in December it would be contained. It was being hyped. How wrong I am.

If YOU can stay home and keep THEM safe YOU have a better chance of us ALL being safe.

girlicorne · 03/04/2020 01:38

No we just stay in the garden, we have no nice green areas nearby and the council have closed the car parks to all the country parks. None of us get any joy from walking around a housing estate so the garden it is!

user1477391263 · 03/04/2020 01:58

Are many people in the UK really still wearing their outdoor shoes in the house even now? Really surprised. I know it depends on the family, but it seems like people really should be removing shoes when coming home (and then washing their hands very very thoroughly).

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 03/04/2020 02:29

Yes we walk to a secluded part of our local beach, never see anyone there so don't feel the need to rush the journey.

I was WFH all day today so Dd was largely stuck in front of a screen all day, we went for a walk to a nearby field at 19:00 and had a kick about with a ball, again nobody else there and we would have just gone for a walk without stopping if there were people about.

The exercise thing really depends on where you live, if you live in the middle of nowhere it's fine. If you live in an urban area, maybe having to access communal stairs and corridors out on to busy streets then you need to restrict yourself more. If you can go out later in the day it's much quieter than the morning, same with supermarket shopping I went at 4pm yesterday and there were only about 4 of us in the shop, whereas in the morning there were queues outside.

slithytove · 03/04/2020 04:18

Yes, once a day for a bike ride. Yet to see anyone out of their house at the same time as us. With a 5 and 6 year old it’s the only thing keeping me sane.

Ferfooksake · 03/04/2020 06:38

Everyone does. Round my way, it’s busy everywhere. People you never normally see are out. It’s like there isn’t a lockdown

MindyStClaire · 03/04/2020 06:43

Yes, absolutely. We (me, DH, toddler DD) all love getting out for a walk by the sea and would've done so twice a day on weekends before all this. So it's a walk in the morning and the garden in the afternoon.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/04/2020 06:44

Yes I am because we don't have a garden and there's no way I'm keeping DS in 24/7 with no fresh air.

We go out every day, for a walk and a play in a field near our house. There's hardly ever anyone there so it's easy to avoid people.

Twice a week we walk to the supermarket instead along the river which is a nice walk. I have to take DS as I'm a single parent.

BillywilliamV · 03/04/2020 06:49

Yes, I take my DDs out for exercise, because when they catch the virus, and I believe that we all will eventually, I want them to be as fit as possible so that they have the reserves to fight it.
