We have a leak in our bathroom that we are unable to fix ourselves. What are people doing if they need plumbers / electricians etc during lockdown??!!

I think plumbers are classed as essential when it comes to home repairs so you should be fine

My understanding is that there’s no issue, under the current guidelines, in getting a workman out for the reason you describe.

I would call your usual plumber and ask either can they come out, or if not do they know a plumber who is making themselves available.

DS had to have a plumber out last week. They just ensured they agreed a number of rules before - him and his flat mates deep cleaned the flat first, stayed in their rooms when the plumber was in and left out soap, disinfectant etc. for the plumber to use. The plumber also wore gloves and a mask. Then the lads cleaned the flat again after he left.

Plumbers, electricians etc can’t work from home so they are permitted to work as normal observing social distancing advice.

Gloves/mask etc I’m sure not strictly essential - that was the plumbers choice - but I think it’s wise to have a conversation about what measures you can each put in place to ensure everyone’s safety. I’m sure the plumber will be as concerned as you are.

I contacted my plumber to help out a friend yesterday. He said he’s still working but he’s struggling to get parts.

Hannah021 · 02/04/2020 18:28

It is essential, they can come and sort it out ...

pocketem · 02/04/2020 18:29

Yeah, the parts availability is the biggest problem. Most of the trades merchants have shut

Thanks all. DH was aghast when I said we need to get a plumber round. It is the pipe under the sink leaking and we have had a look but clueless. I will contact our usual number.
