Is picking up a fit note from GP surgery essential?

I’ve been signed off work since early February, I’ve been taking photos of the fit notes I have since then and sending them to work.

I spoke to the GP on Friday and have been signed off again for another month, the fit note is at the surgery waiting for me to collect and will be kept their indefinitely until I come pick it up.

I’ve told work that I’ve been signed off again and given them the dates. They are insisting on seeing a photo of the fit note. I feel like it’s a non essential journey at the moment, I’ll either have to drive (if my car even starts, I haven’t driven in over 2 weeks and old battery) or walk about 45 minutes each way, most of the walk is on narrow pavements where it will be impossible for me to stay 2m away from people if there’s anyone else about.

What would you do?

Ive thought about asking the receptionist if I can pay for them to post it, or email me a photo somehow, but I can’t get through to the surgery on the phone which is unsurprising as I live in one of the worst hit counties for CV, and I’m reluctant to keep trying as I feel like it’s a massive waste of their time at the moment and what if I’m on the phone to someone chatting about a piece of paper while someone else really sick is waiting to speak them?

Any advice from an HR perspective would be amazing too.

Thanks.

I’m off sick, I’ve had all my conversations with the GP via telephone and my GP practice emailed a fit note to me which I’ve been able to send straight over to my manager. They specifically said this should be acceptable in the current circumstances (I’ve got possible Covid19 symptoms).

I do think GPs need to step up a bit. All of these things should be emailed. It's not hard. I know they are maxed out but if they made a bit more use of very obviously available technology I'm sure they could actually make their own lives easier.

Can you email reception and ask them to reply with a photo/scan of the fit note? That's pretty standard practice here even before Covid-19.

Our surgery are posting out as standard - can you request this?

I’ve tried again and got through and they’ve emailed it to me, thanks everyone.

My doctor posted mine to me. Could you ask them to do that?
