New study says it’s airborne as well as droplet borne

This is seriously worrying. A study has shown that the virus remains in the air hours after the Covid positive person has left. So this means going to the supermarket is ultra high risk even if you keep 2m apart. I haven’t been wearing a mask due to thinking if I kept 2m away from people I’d be ok. But I’m wearing one now!

Sorry it’s a daily mail link.

I think rather obviously the NHS managers are changing 'the
rules' about PPE according to their stock levels.

Ours is telling us not to wear masks while dealing with outpatients, and non-symptomatic inpatients.

However, once about the fifth non-symptomatic inpatient we dealt with subsequently tested positive, we're ignoring 'the rules' and wearing paper masks for everyone, now. We have few of the higher spec masks available so we're saving them for the known COVIDs.

definitelygc · 01/04/2020 08:24

the YouTube link I posted from a senior doctor answers a question about masks

I watched it but he just says "they are effective", he doesn't explain how. I understand that paper masks reduce the chance of you coughing and spreading it around but I don't understand how a paper mask will protect you from breathing it in. It makes sense that doctors have them as they are in close contact with patients but I struggle to understand how a mask will protect me if I'm walking down the road or in the supermarket keeping 2 metre distance from others. I just don't get the physics of it.

Northernsoullover · 01/04/2020 08:24

I posted a video link upthread. The doctor explains how normal interactions (speaking, shouting) make the virus 'airborne'.

adiposegirl2 · 01/04/2020 08:33

There was a thread about is this thing airborne.
A poster was lambasted for saying they believe it is and knowing better than any expert.
That poster can now give them the middle finger💪

CassieAuLait · 01/04/2020 08:47

It is now theoretical anyway; how can ordinary citizens acquire masks? They aren’t available.

The Korean Specialist was clear: the advice given to the public matches the supply in the shops, not the view of epidemiologists!

deplorabelle · 01/04/2020 09:16

NB not an expert but I do have experience of reading scientific and medical data. This is my reasonably educated laypersons understanding of the current knowledge.

There is a difference between airborne and aerosol. As I understand it what's been tested is aerosol and that does linger in the air for three hours. However you don't make aerosol by coughing and sneezing (that's droplets which fall through the air and land on surfaces). Aerosol was simulated in the lab using an electric drill.

In real life situations you get aerosol off dental procedures and also when intubating and especially extubating patients. In normal everyday life in a large space like a supermarket you won't get aerosol.

Im sure those of us that took it seriously early on and were able to discern based on what was happening elsewhere in the world what could come our way bought some early on.

Yeah yeah flame me for feeling better/ more knowledgeable/judgy/ fill in the blank I really dont care DUCES

flaxmeadow. Not sure if it’s the same one but I remember reading an article about a bus mass infection..

It was a different study

The article I saw was ages ago and had happened right at the start of the crisis in Wuhan. The bus was empty for that part of the journey, apart from the 2 passengers, who had been on the bus at separate times. I think it was at a really quiet time, like very early in the morning

UYScuti · 01/04/2020 10:46

I think in many cases the masks are a kind of comfort blanket where people are wearing them just for being outdoors, it's also a way of signalling that you are in the 'I'm being ultra cautious' camp.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing if it helps people to feel calmer, but obviously it's a bad thing if they are taking PPE resources away from people who need them

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 10:48

They’re great if we all wear them but we missed that boat.

IrisAtwood · 01/04/2020 11:20

Masks can also reduce the number of times people touch their faces.

Thank you @Blueblackrose for linking the very informative video

Tonyaster · 01/04/2020 11:38

I wear a scarf over my mouth and nose when I go out. No different to the fabric masks that people are making.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 01/04/2020 11:50

Thanks @Northernsoullover for the interesting video.

You don't know if the fabric masks people are wearing have a filter inside them which are filtering out, say, 95% or 99% particles.

However, wearing a scarf is better than nothing. It protects others from your droplets but also must surely prevent you from ingesting particles to some degree? Better to buy an N95 respirator mask though.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 01/04/2020 11:56

I ordered mine from eBay last week and they arrived yesterday.

Tonyaster · 01/04/2020 12:04

I absolutely wouldn't wear a chinese mask that i bought from Ebay. Loads of them are recycled!

LostInSaigon · 01/04/2020 14:25

The virus particle can be as small as 0.05 microns. Of course its airborne, thats why its spreading so fast. If you believe the WHO that its not airborne than you will believe anything. People its time to put a mask on or else stay at home. There are public orders in most countries in Asia for people to wear them. In this country if you wear a mask at the supermarket, people give you dirty looks.

NemophilistRebel · 01/04/2020 14:31

This is actually the reason China and other mask wearing countries are using for their far lower death rate and case numbers

PonderLand · 01/04/2020 16:40

@Miljea 'We have few of the higher spec masks available so we're saving them for the known COVIDs.' Are you sure that is the case? We were also told that but once the positives started appearing we were told we are still only allowed to wear apron, short gloves and surgical masks. We have the ear loop surgical masks left now and they are shite hopefully they will get more of the tie surgical masks this week. I'm waiting for the day they tell us to keep the same surgical mask on all day. I know that is happening in quite a few hospitals already.

Tonyaster · 01/04/2020 18:05

Of course its airborne, thats why its spreading so fast

Why does social distancing work then and why does the pattern of the virus follow people's travel? Why is it concentrated in London?

UYScuti · 01/04/2020 18:09

surely it is droplet-bourne, but the droplets can be airbourne
