PPE

I've just watches the sky news clip from an infectious disease hospital in south Italy who are only treating covid19 and all the PPE they use and different practices that they use. Not a single member of staff has become ill because of it and comparisons are being drawn with other hospitals with deaths of staff.

After spending the day in the hospital being told that a plastic pinny, surgical mask and gloves will be fine (no visor / no FFP3 / no gowns) and I feel quite sick. My manager told us today quite flippantly 'oh well, it's unrealistic to expect PPE we don't have, we'll just have to get on with it'. I can't tell if they don't care or they just don't have a clue.

I thought several medics had died in Italy?

I agree with everything else though.

PinkCrayon · 31/03/2020 18:45

You are right to question it.
Getting a bit sick of hearing Michael Gove saying they are putting their arms around the workers in the NHS when that's obviously untrue with them not even providing enough PPE. Disgusting.
PPE is a basic need that must be met. It's totally unacceptable.

Hannah021 · 31/03/2020 18:47

its not about dont care, but what can they do?

Hannah021 · 31/03/2020 18:48

@PinkCrayon are you saying they can get them but arent doing it?

Marieo · 31/03/2020 18:50

Many photos in the media and from approved channels have NHS workers in full PPE, we know this isn't actually the case, why would it be the same for Italy? Who have tragically lost medics by the way. It is terrible, but there is no PPE, they are looking at ways to scramble together what is available, and fast track approved manufacturers who can start immediately in producing and distributing it. This isn't happening fast enough, but there is a global shortage.

PinkCrayon · 31/03/2020 18:51

I am saying that they aren't getting it @Hannah021 they are saying they are delivering supply's but there are still many reports from staff saying they are not getting it.
And now staff are being threatened with their jobs if they speak out about it!
Its terrible.

Marieo · 31/03/2020 18:54

Ah the flu stockpile. The absolutely terrible inventory system the NHS has is why supplies largely aren't getting to where they should be. There also isn't enough to make a significant dent.

thesunisoutout · 31/03/2020 18:55

@Buzzfrightyears no contractions or deaths in this particular hospital where there equipment and practices differs from other Italian hospital where deaths have happened. Even in the other hospitals in Italy, their PPE is better than ours in the U.K.

In my area the hospital put a call out to private businesses with excess PPE equipment, so we donated a white van full of what we had and know others did too, gladly. They should all do the same if not already. Pillage the private sector if there's spare.
