Government tracking our movements - would you opt in?

Don't know if this has been posted anywhere, can't see it. The government are looking to launch an app to trap our movements and let us know if we have come into contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

They want/need 50% of us to sign up in order for it to be effective. Would you opt in?

Nope

Lumene · 31/03/2020 14:27

Depends on the privacy policy and how data will and won’t be used. They need to be very clear on that.

Bubblesbubblesmybubbles · 31/03/2020 14:27

If there was legislation in place that meant after all this coronavirus malarkey they had to stop then yes I'd have no issue whatsoever.

It might well save a lot of lives

BUT I'd need the legislation in place first. Oh and it would have to solely be used for coronavirus related tracking.

bluewafflewithmayo · 31/03/2020 14:28

Absolutely terrifying how many people would be willing to piss their civil liberties up the wall in the name of "safety."

Instead of looking at Italy, look at Hungary, that's where we are heading.

FOJN · 31/03/2020 14:28

Not a chance. The only confirmed cases have been admitted to hospital and the rest of us aren't being tested so how would it work?

MichaelBoobins · 31/03/2020 14:30

Absolutely. This is what they did in South Korea and look how quickly they’ve contained the virus.

Ronnie27 · 31/03/2020 14:30

I feel uneasy about things like this.

ToTheWall · 31/03/2020 14:30

No. Way.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 31/03/2020 14:30

No, and it's too late anyway.

MichaelBoobins · 31/03/2020 14:30

Oh yeah they did also test anyone with symptoms so not sure how it would work in the UK when we’re not being tested!

BiggerBoat1 · 31/03/2020 14:31

If it leads to widespread testing, then yes.

Can't see how the scheme could work without testing.

Sparklfairy · 31/03/2020 15:19

I'm a bit on the fence about it. I read a thread here a while ago about 'a view from China', where they're doing exactly this. They were tracking people using two specific apps. If you had been in contact with someone who had it, you were whisked away into quarantine and your household were put into total lockdown.

On the one hand, it's a great idea on paper. So many of us come into contact with the virus and have no idea. But this totalitarian approach is not something that people in the Western world (maybe particularly Britain) will tolerate I don't think.

People don't like the idea we're being tracked, listened to, and if we 'sign away' these rights to privacy by signing up, who's to say they'll give them back when all this is over. In all fairness we would probably never know if they did or not.

I love the theory, but the reality is possibly not practical.

I saw a vaccine thread in the same vein as this yesterday. 'Would you get the vaccine if it was available right now'. So many people saying 'nope, everyone else can get it and risk it as it hasn't been tested'.

Not a hopez

cologne4711 · 31/03/2020 15:20

Most people can't be separated from their mobile phone for a second, so they're already being tracked 24 hours a day.

Bool · 31/03/2020 15:21

Nope. @MichaelBoobins let’s wait and see what happens in S Korea before saying it has worked. I can’t see how what they are doing is sustainable.

MoreGruel · 31/03/2020 15:22

Noooooooooooope.

Sparklfairy · 31/03/2020 15:31

Genuine question, if you're not doing anything 'wrong', why would you mind about being tracked?

I'm pretty sure we're tracked anyway as a PP said. I go into a physical store, don't mention it to anyone, yet I get ads for that store online later in the day. I'm 99% sure Alexa listens to me and gives me ads. My mum and I both got constant ads for Canesten after we had a long jokey conversation about vaginal dryness stemming from us both separately watching Grace and Frankie with Alexas close by.

I already think we're tracked far more than we think we are. This is the reason I'm torn. I don't want to be tracked but it's already happened. And by 'giving permission' how much more tracking long term, even after this pandemic has passed, have I handed over?

Whitefeather01 · 31/03/2020 15:32

Absolutely fucking not

lubeybooby · 31/03/2020 15:32

Yes, it would be helpful to know for sure if I'd had contact with an infected person, presumably before they knew they were.

Genderwitched · 31/03/2020 15:33

No

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 31/03/2020 15:35

No way.

ginghamstarfish · 31/03/2020 15:36

I agree with a PP, if you're not doing anything wrong then what's the problem? Anyone tracking me all day would be extremely bored, and if you have your mobile location- enabled, and/or an Alexa etc you are already being listened to and tracked, for advertising purposes (worse in my opinion as not helpful to us in general).

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/03/2020 15:37

No chance.

KaronAVyrus · 31/03/2020 15:37

No way

Sparklfairy · 31/03/2020 15:37

But what about when people post on here suspicious of their husbands/partners of cheating and the majority actively encourage going through their phone, and more relevant here, checking google maps history?

I'm just trying to see where the line is. When someone is suspected of cheating, somehow the consensus here is that their phone and privacy is fair game. What's the difference?
