When do you honestly think it will happen? And when do you want it to happen?!

Also hoping for late May/early June. Shorten summer holidays to 4 weeks and make 2021’s Feb and May half terms 2 weeks instead of 1 so teachers get their full holiday allowance albeit slightly delayed (like other key workers).

fedup21 · 31/03/2020 15:49

I was not sent a letter, I have received an email, and yes it is a private school

Email/letter, it really doesn’t matter which it is!

I just wanted to see the wording.

Delatron · 31/03/2020 15:49

Why if Italy are going back in May are people saying we’ll be later than September! Makes no sense

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 31/03/2020 15:55

Feb to May is the most important part in the school calendar, as we are preparing students for exams.

ineedaholidaynow · 31/03/2020 16:00

TheEmoji I am assuming the PP wasn't saying vulnerable teachers couldn't work at schools, just that it might be an odd choice of place to work if you need to keep away from germs, especially Primary schools.

Springhere · 31/03/2020 16:01

I think it could be later than September. If restrictions are loosened during the summer, we may need another lockdown in the autumn to bring things under control. Perhaps we might manage to squeeze in a few school weeks in the early autumn....

fedup21 · 31/03/2020 16:05

just that it might be an odd choice of place to work if you need to keep away from germs, especially Primary schools

The people on the vulnerable list that are on my staff are

Pregnant
Asthmatic
Diabetic
Post cancer/transplant
Lung issues
Caring for a vulnerable person

I don’t think working as a teacher in a school is an odd thing to do for any of those people Confused.

HarrySnotter · 31/03/2020 16:06

I find it very hard to believe there are so many vulnerable teachers -at the best of times schools are a hotbed of germs -hardly the place for anyone with compromised health.

So what do you think @Stellamboscha? Do you think these staff are lying to get out of being at work?

I received my NHS letter because I'm recovering from cancer. We have staff who are pregnant, asthmatic, one with a heart condition. We all work bloody hard but in these unprecedented circumstances, yes, we are vulnerable. I'm not sure why you find that hard to believe to be honest.

@ineedaholidaynow I was a teacher before I had cancer. I'm not the first and I won't be the last. It doesn't mean that I want to give up my career .

Rosebel · 31/03/2020 16:10

I don't think all children's mental health suffers by them being off school. I would say my youngest daughter's mental health has improved by being off. She has had no support for her autism at school and is coping with work much better at home.
At any rate I doubt schools will be back soon. In countries where the children are going back they've had much stricter guidelines and people have obeyed the lockdown (unlike here). You only have to look at the news (or on MN) to see the amount of people who still don't get it. The government is too weak to enforce a proper lockdown.

By your own admission schools are a hotbed of germs. So why are you so keen to send all the staff and students back to this hotbed? COVID-19 is a germ isn’t it? Or have l missed something?

NeurotrashWarrior · 31/03/2020 16:15

Pregnant
Asthmatic
Diabetic
Post cancer/transplant
Lung issues
Caring for a vulnerable person

Some of our absolute best staff are among this group right now.

ineedaholidaynow · 31/03/2020 16:18

I was just trying to explain another PP's thought process, I don't think certain people shouldn't work in schools. I am assuming if you are germphobic it wouldn't be a good career choice!

oldwhyno · 31/03/2020 16:18

I'll guess early June. Try and get a full half term in, then close again for summer hols, along with other measures being relaxed/tightened.

vinoandbrie · 31/03/2020 16:21

Really hoping they can go back after the May half term.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 31/03/2020 16:30

I'd really like some semblance of summer term - only child here due to go to secondary after the summer, so that would allow for some primary school leaving and transition activities. I'm listening to large family playing in the garden next door and my heart breaks that DC won't have any own age company till restrictions are relaxed.

Notpanickingjustyet · 31/03/2020 16:37

I love how some mnetters don't have a clue about what the end of term involves.

Also, we trained to educate, not to help lift the economy over the summer holidays!

Leona123321 · 31/03/2020 16:56

Do you know what. Teachers are incredible. We put something on our little girls tapestry to show them what she's been doing. 3 teachers from EYFS left her a message. Saying they missed her very much. Told her they are really proud of her and to keep in touch.

I don't think they should work over the summer holidays. I just hope they can have one last term before summer. It's sad for teachers and pupils all of this. We all can agree we want normality as soon as possible. If they schools reopen before summer I'm guessing it will cause a huge amount of relief for everyone. Vunerable children sadly may not be able to return until this virus is dying down or a vaccine comes along. But let's all help the majority of children can return. Let's hope the teachers can get back to normal too. They have families too. They are probably tired, worried and wished they knew more too. If they go back in September it's going to be much tougher on everyone.

CallmeAngelina · 31/03/2020 16:56

It's not wholly surprising that some schools are giving out false information as to predicted re-opening dates - look at the mess there was when lots of Heads jumped the gun about the Key Worker lists.

Aragog · 31/03/2020 17:02

I find it very hard to believe there are so many vulnerable teachers -at the best of times schools are a hotbed of germs -hardly the place for anyone with compromised health

At present we have 12 members of teaching staff not able to be in work.

2 were already on long term sickness and not would now be classes as at risk.
3 are self isolating.
7 are also 'at risk' - pregnant, asthma, lung condition, diabetic, medication which lowers immunity, live with some who is most vulnerable and shielding.

That's 12 out of 11 teachers, 11 TA/HLTA/Learning Mentor and 2 SMT - so 24 potentials teaching staff. That's half our staff.

Its very naive to think that teaching staff might not have compromised health, especially as many gain these issues in adulthood long after qualifying.

Aragog · 31/03/2020 17:03

Or should those who didn't get the letter as the 'most vulnerable' be back at school mixing with the spread of the virus and take the risk?

SpokeTooSoon · 31/03/2020 17:08

Self-isolating doesn’t make them vulnerable per se.

The teachers that were off at our schools in the last week of school were staying away because someone in their household had symptoms of something - probably a cold.

MintyMabel · 31/03/2020 17:08

Also, we trained to educate, not to help lift the economy over the summer holidays!

I trained in something specific, not to do what my work have asked me to do.

I have a friend who is a trained opera singer and tours the world. She is currently employed as a hospital cleaner.

Exceptional times need exceptional measures. I’m wondering why you think you are exempt from that as a teacher? Don’t you think a strong economy benefits you both in work and in life?

Pomegranatepompom · 31/03/2020 17:11

@Notpanickingjustyeting I didn't train to look after people in critical care - but I will.

cornishdreams1 · 31/03/2020 17:21

Also, we trained to educate, not to help lift the economy over the summer holidays!

I really just can not believe these people are teaching in some schools, paid to inspire and educate our next generation. Thankfully I know of nobody like this.
Seriously go and get a job in a supermarket but please do not continue with teaching if this is truly your world view.

MARMITEcheese2020 · 31/03/2020 17:23

Well my dc school is being listed as a possible field hospital. So I'm not seeing it being before Sept.. He needs new uniform. As his is too small. But won't order till I get the email saying he's going bk.
