When do you honestly think it will happen? And when do you want it to happen?!

*any, not anyway in my last post.

Eggcited · 31/03/2020 14:56

most of us are working on the basis our schools will be reopening as soon as possible. In our case, in seven weeks.

Your school cannot possibly say with such certainty that they will be opening in 7 weeks.

They like all other schools, have no idea when they will be allowed to reopen.

fedup21 · 31/03/2020 14:57

Can we please see that letter (anonymised) @cornishdreams1?

I’m interested to see which LEA it is and why they are giving out information before it’s released by the government.

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 14:57

I reckon Cornishdreams1 is lying about the 7 weeks thing- how convenient they got the email just now when it suits their agenda? And they have changed their wording on it multiple times.

Delatron · 31/03/2020 15:06

I guess all schools are different but we’ve had a rubbish weekly schedule which looks
like it has been put together in about 20 minutes if that. For the whole of the year group. No online teaching etc.
So I don’t think our teachers would need to do much planning if this was the case until September. It’s far easier than teaching all day....

Planning to teach remotely until September doesn’t mean that the schools will be shut until them.

I reckon we’ll get barely a week’s notice. It’s a continually changing situation.

Delatron · 31/03/2020 15:08

I’m actually feeling more reassured now about them possibly going back in mid June. I was wondering where this continual quoting of September was coming from and it seems as though it is just schools preparing for a worse case scenario rather than anything coming from the government.....

cornishdreams1 · 31/03/2020 15:13

fedup I was not sent a letter, I have received an email, and yes it is a private school, but that makes no difference as we all have to follow the government guidance. I am most worried for the students with poor mental health.

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 15:13

@Delatron That doesn't sound great from your school- I hope you get something more comprehensive after Easter. Can you/your kids email teachers for advice at least?

It's different work to teaching until September- but I'm responding to emails from about 7.30-4 daily during term time, plus planning new lessons. After Easter, we hope to have Microsoft Teams up and running for each class, and we'll also be doing pastoral phone calls home.

I agree that going back mid/end June is a possibility if we use Arlene Foster's timetable (she's the only UK politician who's said anything about a timescale and she said "about 16 weeks"). I do think if we can have this it will be really useful for sorting the students out for next year!

Lostintransfixation · 31/03/2020 15:13

If they are closed until September I think schools will be asked to work in clusters to cover the summer hols. So perhaps two schools in a cluster will be a venue host for the children of key workers. Staff across the cluster will be asked to rotate working through the summer (eg for 1-2 weeks).

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 15:14

Tbf, it's worth bearing in mind that private schools have their own agenda right now e.g. they don't want parents giving notice or disputing this term's fees.

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 15:16

@Lostintransfixation This is happening already in lots of schools over Easter- my school is a "hub" school for our MAT, so one secondary and two primaries on the same site. In theory, staff can be directed to supervise the primary or secondary children, so e.g. if all primary teachers are ill, then secondary teachers could do it.

I think a lot of local authorities are also setting up hubs as well.

It does make sense, apart from it means more students being bused in which is not great for social distancing.

cornishdreams1 · 31/03/2020 15:17

Outrageous that you should suggest I am lying! It suits your narrative, as you have already decided your retirement has started early, and you clearly are not invested in the children that depend on you.

You have been given no guidance whatsoever regarding an autumn return date, only a worst case scenario. Well lets face it, anyone can come up with that! Maybe it will be autumn 2022 or even 2025!

You should be deeply ashamed, you are peddling the lies about schools remaining closed until the autumn without a shred of evidence that this will be the case.

Honestly you are a pretty poor example of teaching quality in our country.

Stellamboscha · 31/03/2020 15:17

@Cornishdreams1 thank you for your persistence on the face of so much endless negativity. It is encouraging. Reading the May4th Italy date is heartening. My school is an independent so we will be back as soon. As Gvt permits/it worries me that unions might try to prevent state schools going back before September/the last thing this country needs now is striking teachers.
I find it very hard to believe there are so many vulnerable teachers -at the best of times schools are a hotbed of germs -hardly the place for anyone with compromised health.

Delatron · 31/03/2020 15:21

I think if the schools go back in Italy at the beginning of May then that will be encouraging.

Stellamboscha · 31/03/2020 15:23

If state school teachers insist on their summer holidays it will likely drive an even bigger gap on attainment between independent and state and also even worse impression of teachers than is already the case. Parents who have lost jobs and holidays are hardly likely t o sympathise.
One interesting possibility could be a reconfiguring of the school year into more even terms /no reason why we should stick with the current outdated pattern in the modern world.

cornishdreams1 · 31/03/2020 15:23

dela Fortunately for you, and for your children, not all teachers are like sansa and desperate for the schools to remain shut, whatever the cost to the children based on simple hearsay.

You can feel reasonably comforted by the plans taking place to open early summer, as we have now been instructed. It is very unlikely our school will be the only one planning to reopen! I expect most schools will hope to reopen then realistically.

I am sorry your children are not receiving anywhere near the level of education they are entitled to, and I do hope this will be addressed over the Easter holidays for them.

LuckyMarmiteLover · 31/03/2020 15:24

I’m hoping for September but dread it may be later than that.

Delatron · 31/03/2020 15:28

Yeah it’s rubbish. We can’t email the teachers either. They keep sending defensive notes about they have families too..

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 31/03/2020 15:29

I'm thinking and hoping June/July time.
Maybe one year per days. Nursery to reception kids, yr 6 to yr7 kids and ur 11 on wards are going to need settling in days before September. Especially if it's a new school.

cantkeepawayforever · 31/03/2020 15:30

Dela That's a real shame. We have tried really hard to put two full weeks of education together for everyone, including e-mail response pretty much instantly within school hours.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 31/03/2020 15:33

What plans taking place? My school know if nothing. Sounds more like wishful thinking to me. They can’t decide, it’s up to the government.

mondaywine · 31/03/2020 15:34

Classes of 45 in infants would be ludicrous. Before Nicola Sturgeon announced on the 18th that we would close on the 20th we had 12 staff out of 26 unable to work. Only two were due to actual colds etc. The rest fall into the vulnerable group and this won’t change next week. There is also barely a supply teacher to be found in Scotland due to changes made to their conditions a number of years ago. We couldn’t be staffed by supply either. I’m desperate to be back in the classroom but it has to be safe and sustainable. We don’t have hot water in every room, never mind adequate cleaning.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 31/03/2020 15:35

I find it very hard to believe there are so many vulnerable teachers -at the best of times schools are a hotbed of germs -hardly the place for anyone with compromised health.

What a horrible horrible comment. People with compromised health are covered by the Disability Act. Unless you think only the finest specimens of health can work in a school. Wait...isn’t that eugenics?

GreenWheat · 31/03/2020 15:40

I am hoping for June, which seems fairly realistic with the way things stand at the moment. Things could change of course, but I hope not.

NeurotrashWarrior · 31/03/2020 15:44

None of us knows.

Most schools are running skeleton staff now.

Some may choose to take on more children earlier.

Infection rates are different in different areas; the peak locally is actually later than other areas (I've been told by front line local hospital staff.)

Schools are running through the Easter holidays as childcare, staff are being asked to man them as volunteers and if they'd consider going to other schools.

We cannot predict any more than this beyond 8th June, which is where the 12 weeks for vulnerable staff took us to.

I'm a teacher and just seen our email to volunteer over Easter.

We've been warned of restrictions for 6 months. Winter will probably see further measures as flue season clashes with main asthma season.
