Coronavirus and gambling adverts

I've sat and watched the TV this evening and have seen multiple adverts for gambling sites and online casinos. There will be hundreds of thousands of people right now who are jobless (potentially for the first time in their lives) and desperate. They also have tonnes of spare time on their hands as they're locked indoors with their phones. I read an article the other day that said many football betters are moving on to much more addictive gambling such as online casinos now all the sport is off. The idea that gambling companies are cashing in on this makes me sick.

I think we should push for a ban on gambling adverts for the duration of this crisis. In light of the fact we've already shut down restaurants, bars, pubs, shops this seems to me a totally reasonable measure to help keep people safe.

it's a noble sentiment.

what other businesses would be running adverts right now? airlines? undertakers? how desperate are the tv companies for any advertising revenue, from anybody, right now? should the government step in and bail out tv companies for the duration of the crisis so the tv companies can afford to turn down such adverts?

  • lots of questions. even in good times, I'm sure there's lots of misery in that area.
