Don't misunderstand me, please! I'm pro state-imposed measures to enforce social distancing - both in my home country, the UK, and where I live at present.

But a borderline fascist politician, enabled by his own party, obtaining the right to rule by decree without a time limit?

Getting to smear the opposition to this as "they just want people to die"?

This is some scary fucking shit, people!

Yes, that sounds like an actual example of a potentisl abuse of power and the kind of thing that should be protested as opposed to the lockdowns taking place in other countries like the UK.

Gin96 · 30/03/2020 18:55

Scary stuff, much more frightening than the Coronavirus, this is what worries me about lockdown, mass control and the people on mumsnet wanting more of it, what will our children’s futures be like 😢

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 30/03/2020 18:56

But how do you? Resist? In a situation when a mass protest is, literally, dangerous and thus only serves to strengthen the argument?

This really scares me, to be honest. I'm not a conspiracy nut. I am a bit of a lefty - but by no means a radical.

Still, this scares me!

ETA, just to be abundantly clear:

I don't like BoJo. He's an amoral egomaniac with no other agenda than BoJo. He's despicable and stands for everything I stand against. But he's not a fascist.

I sort of like, but by no means uncritically support right or wrong Alain Berset, the Swiss home secretary/minister of the interior and a Social Democrat, who runs stuff around here. He could do better - but that's easy for me to say not being in charge. And I think he tries to strike the right balance, even if he gets it wrong at times.

I don't like Jeremy Corbyn, despite being a life-long Labour voter. Voting for him, last time around, had me pinch my nose as I voted. He's a populist idiot who couldn't lead his way out of a wet paper bag. But he's no fascist.

Victor Orban is a bona fide fascist, though.

And he's ruling by decree. Indefinitely!

Sadly, this is an opportunity that its easy to take advantage of. I half expect Trump to, but I don't think he's quite at that level. I'm not a Tory voter and I don't like Boris, but I cannot imagine them trying anything remotely like this. It's very concerning - if you're inclined to power grab, there's no better time.

Terralee · 30/03/2020 19:15

Orban is an anti Semitic & anti Roma Fascist.
He has seen people like Erdogan get away with similar behaviour.
These are scary times.

Same here. Can't stand the man - but in this one respect, I actually trust him.

In all fairness, Orban was a fascist long before Corona. It's just that he seems to have spotted an opportunity and seized it.

I don't trust Orban one iota to revert the changes once everyone else returns to normal.

Let's just hope the memory of shaking off authoritarian rule os young enough in Hungary for people to remember what to do when this is over!

Trump will if he can, but doesn't have the smarts to be anything other than the frontman. He was always a narcissist and grandiose, and is now almost certainly in cognitive decline.

If the people behind him can find a way to keep him up there, as a figurehead, so that they can get on with what they want in their own fields, they will.

Whereas I completely agree that Orban is dangerous in his own right, and is young and energetic enough to be around for a long time.Angry

BigFatLiar · 30/03/2020 19:19

Sadly this is how Hitler came to power. Had himself given power to rule and then shut down the parliament.

I tend to agree.

Bloody hell, the times we're in when you have to say "thank goodness the preselident of the United State is a demented fuckwit!" Confused

*president ... I'm not particularly demented myself (as far as I know), but typing on mobile is not my forte
