Holiday cancellation question

Hello
Due to go on holiday with Jet2 at end of Aug to Croatia. We have decided that even if we can travel by then we won't go any way as not only will we not be able to afford it but also it's just not worth the risk in case another wave happens. We don't yet have travel insurance (I recently had to have an operation so we were waiting until after that before taking out insurance - this was all before the pandemic really took hold here). So far we have only paid the deposit of £200 - the balance is due at start of june. If Jet2 cancelled would we get the £200 back even if we didn't have travel insurance? We could really do with that money right now so I need to make a decision on whether to cancel now or whether to hold on a bit longer (still before balance due) in case Jet2 cancel it by then anyway

Thanks

You would lose your deposit.
The holiday company would only refund if they had to cancel it, the insurance would only cover it if you were too ill to go.

If you cancel now you will lose the deposit. If you pay the balance and Jet2 cancel due to travel restrictions, they’ll give you a full refund

Thank you. Well there is no way I'm paying the balance so I may as well just cancel now. The £200 deposit is spent anyway I just thought it would have been nice to have that refunded back (could really do with it right now!)

I’ve got a Jet2 holiday for August too. My travel agent advised they are likely to offer vouchers for the deposit amount to be used against a new holiday next year. Might be worth waiting until the balance is due and contacting them

Northumberlandlass · 30/03/2020 08:52

Yes - ask if they can hold your deposit for a holiday in 2021! I have done this with another holiday company. They were more than happy to do this!

Our travel agent is letting people postpone to next year, so it might be worth asking if they will do that. The travel industry doesn’t want to lose your booking so they are being very accommodating. However, if you cancel they will not be giving you the deposit back, which is in line with their usual practices and not just related to the current situation.

For certainty it’s probably easier to just cancel now. If jet2 cancelled your holiday and you’d be entitled to a full refund, you won’t find out until just before you fly. We have a holiday booked for early May, which obviously isn’t happening. We paid the full balance before this situation escalated. So we’re waiting for them to officially cancel our holiday and the travel agent has told us it will probably be about the 15th April that they can officially cancel it.

Dont hold your breath on that date for a refund, @CakeAndGin

We are supposed to be flying Sunday. They keep emailing me saying they will call me to sort it out, hang tight......

@Riddlediddle you have nothing to loose by sitting
tight until the balance is due, and seeing what life us like then. If you cancel now, you will loose it. If Jet2 cancel before the balance is due, you should get it back.

@kitenvsbox I’m not holding my breath for that date. Every time I've spoken with the travel agent they just try to get me to postpone until next year. It’s just not possible due to other factors but they’re reluctant to lose the money (which I understand) but annoying. Hope they contact you soon.
