Congratulating the 10 kids who completed the assignment and giving their names. And then in block caps:

FOR ALL THOSE WHO DID NOT COMPLETE THIS I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK OVER THIS IN CLASS 👍

Rude much?!! And no, their school isn’t open for key workers before anyone jumps on me and says how busy she must be

Year 10 they need to be self motivated enough to get their own work done.

I thought you were talking about primary or something.

BrooHaHa · 29/03/2020 14:36

To be fair, by year 10 parents shouldn't be having to get a full day of work out of their kids- most 14 and 15 year olds should be capable of self-directing. 9 of my Year 4 class completed their online work this week, I'd expect a far higher proportion of children almost twice their age to be capable of it. Lots of them will have been lazy- if they had a genuine problem, they could have emailed the teacher about it (again, one of the 8 year olds in my class did this, it is possible). I wouldn't send my class this email, because they're too young to be expected to self direct, but I wouldn't say it's going too far to expect a class of Year 10s to do so.

I wouldn't take this as an attack on the parents, more as a chivvy along for the kids. Maybe the teacher should have used bold instead of caps though.

Quarantimespringclean · 29/03/2020 14:36

Seems fair to me. If they were age 10 it would be a bit OTT but Y10s should be working independently so a bit of shouting doesn’t seem uncalled for.

PeppaisaBitch · 29/03/2020 14:37

Teachers know which kids have access and don't. We have reams of info on which kids have computers, chaotic home lives, pupil premium etc. She will know the ids extremely well by y10

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 14:37

e are under no pressure from SLT, who are happy for us to set manageable work in manageable chunks, and provide support and feedback

That sounds like the approach our school is taking.

It has to be very stressful for teachers at the moment - as well as pupils and their families.

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 14:38

DS's school has NO IDEA about the devices in my house.

Especially with more parents working from home. And more children at home.

lyralalala · 29/03/2020 14:38

The thing is, the fact 10 did submit the work requested shows it was achievable.

The only thing it shows was that it was achievable for those 10

itswonkylampshade · 29/03/2020 14:38

It’s absolutely a shitty message and shows the teacher in a poor light.

There will be families falling to pieces this week for different reasons and struggling to come to terms with new routines and realities.

In our house we’re worrying about older relatives, struggling to keep a family business afloat as well as home educate and continue self-employment contracts. Many other families will be navigating the same challenges. It’s hard! The kids are definitely being affected by our stress levels.

My experience of home schooling this week has been totally overwhelming. My twelve year old appears to be faced with a tsunami of uncoordinated directives via google classroom which are actually quite tricky to sort through and organise. I’m a born multitasker and struggling to be on top of what’s needed for when.

Someone lashing out at kids like that at a time like this is showing a real lack of intelligence and empathy, imho.

FredaFrogspawn · 29/03/2020 14:38

Our head teacher would be horrified if we sent this. The focus at the moment really should be about wellbeing, safety and confidence building for a new way of working.

DippyAvocado · 29/03/2020 14:40

I am a primary teacher and think that message is unacceptable. I am only setting revision activities as I know some children won't have sufficient access to the internet to complete online tasks, or won't have a printer to print paper activities, or will have parents who don't encourage them to complete the tasks, or who are trying to do what they can while working from home, or simply have other priorities for this time.

The government themselves have stated there is no expectation for the curriculum to be delivered during this time.

AmelieTaylor · 29/03/2020 14:40

Your message would have been better.

However, right now a lot of people have a lot of worry & 20/30 year tens fucking around, not doing the set work... I really can’t get flustered by a teacher sending that message .

AmelieTaylor · 29/03/2020 14:41

@DippyAvocado. Theses kids are YEAR10, not primary. They need to take responsibility for their work themselves.

DippyAvocado · 29/03/2020 14:42

Year 10s may also have difficulty accessing devices if their parents are using them to work from home.

Oakmaiden · 29/03/2020 14:42

@Cary2012

You see, if I was 15, I would interpret what you have said as "it doesn't really matter if you do this or not".

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 14:42

At least the teacher can't tell them off and put them in isolation....

Silentplikebath · 29/03/2020 14:42

Surely a teacher’s job is to encourage students and to support their learning?

The message is rude and if I was a stroppy teenager I wouldn’t bother to complete this teacher’s work! Someone needs to tell her that she’d get better results by being polite, kind and supportive.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 29/03/2020 14:43

For Year 10 it's fine.
My DS is in year 10 and told me that some of the kids are not bothering with the online work that has been set. WTH?

If there are circumstances where they couldn't do the work presumably they would have contacted the teacher and explained, no?

Tibola · 29/03/2020 14:43

I think we can see from the split response this isn’t an obvious rude or not rude situation.

DS did complete the work. I only saw it because he screenshot the response and sent to me to show he had completed it and his teacher had named him.

Out of all subjects only English, geography and maths have set work to be done at home so I’m not sure DSs teachers are under immense pressure at all. And the maths work is just a link to Hegarty maths which they do every week as normal.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/03/2020 14:43

I think it’s fair enough.

PegasusReturns · 29/03/2020 14:43

I think it’s shitty.

My similarly aged older DC are in similar position and I thank my lucky stars every day that we are in a house big enough for everyone to work at an individual desk in a room with a door that shuts, their own computers/iPads and two parents who have flexible work and aren’t stressed about getting sick/losing jobs.

Many people are, for myriad reasons, really struggling at the movement. It’s not as simple as saying “you’re 15 you should be motivated to learn”

adaline · 29/03/2020 14:43

Year 10? Totally fair enough.

Your DS is old enough to knuckle down and do the work.

Hercwasonaroll · 29/03/2020 14:43

None of this is true. I have no idea who has a device at home, why would school ever ask this?
As for knowing them well, most classes aren't taken by the same teacher every year.

CeibaTree · 29/03/2020 14:43

Year 10?! I don't see a problem with this message. It's pretty to the point and the use of caps is probably just to hammer home the message. I thought you were going to say reception or year 1 as you were so outraged!

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 14:43

Theses kids are YEAR10, not primary. They need to take responsibility for their work themselves

Do you think there might be issues with having an entire family at home trying to share the family PC to do work, school work, a job etc

monkeytennis97 · 29/03/2020 14:45

Fair enough. Although as a teacher myself I'd be a bit mindful if anyone was ill.
