What do I do about item at the post office?

I have googled to no avail.

Even though we have both been in the house for 2 weeks, our doorbell doesn't work which meant I missed a signed for parcel and this has now been taken to to depot with the usual card to collect within 18 days or whatever.

Obviously this isn't an essential journey so I have no intention of going to collect said item.

It is an item from a small independent business, so it would really be a faff for the lady who owns the business if it gets sent back, plus I would have to pay for postage again.

Does anyone know if the post office are keeping items for longer than usual or if there is any other option?

Yes, I know this is a first world problem but the item cost £150 plus £25 postage so could do without it getting sent back and having to pay that again.

Could you not just go there when you next go to the supermarket?

mrbob · 29/03/2020 10:30

Why don’t you phone the post office and ask them what would be the best option?

Soontobe60 · 29/03/2020 10:32

There should be a number on the card to ring. Alternatively, you can go on to the website. Either way, it can be redelivered. Read the card.

ADreamOfGood · 29/03/2020 10:33

Ring them to check they're open, and ask. They'll have had lots of similar enquiries, plus key workers will be missing their parcels etc when they're at work, so they probably are still opening.

Because I don't like phoning people and asking on Mumsnet seemed like the easier option? Grin

I will try to call them tomorrow

OP, usually on the card you can have an option to organise a redelivery - I think via the website. Maybe give that a try!

Icecreambaby · 29/03/2020 10:49

I think you can go out and collect parcels from the post office so you tie this in with a trip to supermarket or when you go out for a walk? If not the re-delivery suggestion of pp sounds great.

FatimaLovesBread · 29/03/2020 10:50

Go on the website and organise redelivery

CleanOrDie · 29/03/2020 10:50

The card will have instructions on how to arrange for redelivery! Just follow them Confused

bucketofgin · 29/03/2020 10:56

Organise a redelivery?

I would pop a notice on your door about the bell not working!

BendyLikeBeckham · 29/03/2020 10:59

Just go and get it. It is a necessary journey.

I collected a parcel this past week and the sorting office was practising safe distancing. I gelled my hands before and after.

Ha totally understand that- I HATE phoning people

viccat · 29/03/2020 11:12

Royal Mail and the Post Office are two different companies.
It won't be at the Post Office, it will be at your local Royal Mail depot - don't call the Post Office, they won't know!

They always offer the option for free re-delivery - just follow the steps on the card to organise it online for a day when you know you can keep an eye out for the postman.

dementedpixie · 29/03/2020 11:55

That's not always true. I've had to collect from a post office rather than the delivery office before. Normally goes to the delivery office though

Comefromaway · 29/03/2020 11:58

I’ve got the same dilemma. Except the package contains anti histamine meds from Boots. I hadn’t realised the delivery had automatically gone to our old address instead of our new one.
