Entitled to Universal Credit?

DH company have closed and they have said he will be a Furloughed Worker on the Government's 80% Wage Scheme.

My company have also closed and I'm awaiting confirmation of the same thing.

I'm wondering if we are also entitled to claim Universal Credit? Have never claimed before but the reduction in income will make quite a difference to us.

Will probably have to look into doing the Mortgage Holiday otherwise which is something I haven't explored yet.

Anyone know if you can claim universal credit as a furloughed worker and how much earnings would make you ineligible for UC?

If 80% of your wages mean you can still claim UC then yes but it will depend how much those earnings are and what your rent is , how many kids you have , whether you have a partner etc.

We don't currently claim UC because our earnings are too much but I'm wondering if that'll change now DH is furloughed and whether we would be entitled now. We have a mortgage. 1 DC. I'm just worried we'll struggle to make ends meet with the 20% loss of earnings.

There is a calculator on the website.

I think most Powell will be able to live on the 80% because we won't be spending money on leisure or clothes for work or travel costs.

Why can’t you take a mortgage holiday?

I imagine the reduction in income will be difficult for many people. Unless you’re special, of course.

Spencerharn · 28/03/2020 11:54

@Forza14 Well, yes, actually. I am special. More special and more important than the rest of the 67 Million people in the UK. Didnt you know this?
