Just been made redundant this morning due to corona I worked for an outsourcing company and the client has terminated the contract so as I won’t have a job to go back to they can’t furlong
As dh earns £47k before tax I presume I can’t claim anything either
So any tips for getting through this nightmare

On my list so far is cancel dd tv license for her university room as she’s had to move back home
Postpone ds school bus pass as it has shut
Update my cv

You should get new style JSA for 6 months. As long as you have been paying NI for the last 3 years.

It doesn’t take into account savings or partner’s earnings.

Alfiemoon1 · 27/03/2020 16:15

Oh thanks for that yes I have paid ni

I’m sorry OP

It’s terrible. Everyone seems to think furlough is some sort of magic solution but for very many people it is a non starter.

We’ve cancelled everything we can, taken a mortgage holiday, updated CVs & spoken to recruiters (incredibly depressing there’s pretty much no hope of work within the next 6 months minimum) & started the UC application process. Oh & have redone dd1’s student loan application to reflect our dire financial situation.

2020newme · 27/03/2020 16:21

How long have you worked for them? Will you get much in the way of redundancy pay?

I would put in a claim for JSA and maybe check out the tax credit/UC situation? Flowers

LouQoo · 27/03/2020 16:23

I’ve just been made redundant too. Thankfully I was there for a long time so got a decent payout.

DP is on furlough. We can survive until the end of August on 80% of his pay and my redundancy pay.

Then we’re buggered.

Don’t give up hope though. I have a phone interview and video interview booked in with 2 different companies next week. Both have said that, if successful, they would need to meet me in person before they could offer. In person meetings can’t be done until after lockdown ends but at least it feels like progress.

Alfiemoon1 · 27/03/2020 16:44

Worked there for 6 months literally passed my probation a few weeks ago so no redundancy money but they have to give me a months notice

Never thought about having to contact student finance we have moved her stuff out of her accommodation so she doesn’t have to pay the next instalment as the university has shut

LouQoo · 27/03/2020 17:27

They’ll have to pay you for any untaken holiday pay too.

Alfiemoon1 · 27/03/2020 18:14

Yes my holiday pay will be included in my final pay

They CAN put you on furlough, they are mistaken if they think you can’t, and it won’t cost them anything - Martin lewis brilliantly clear on this if you need to find references.

Alfiemoon1 · 27/03/2020 18:47

They aren’t keeping my job open Which is what we were hoping for I no longer have a job as the client has ended the contact with the company I work for

Babyroobs · 27/03/2020 18:50

Claim new style ( contributions based ) JSA. Anything else would be means tested and on your partners wages you would be unlikely to qualify.

Greenbutterlfy566 · 27/03/2020 18:53

Jsa is £73 a week

wtftodo · 27/03/2020 18:56

Alfiemoon according to Martin lewis they can keep your job open, or rehire someone who’s just finished, purely to access the furlough scheme and then you leave at the end of the three months furlough. Please read his v explicit advice and talk to them again

Alfiemoon1 · 27/03/2020 19:22

I will try and explain without being outing so will use another company that is similar it’s call centre work btw. So capita is my employer pays my wages they bill the client they have a client Tesco mobile I take calls from Tesco customers. Tesco ends the contract with capita because of lack of business because of covid19 so therefore my job isn’t being kept open for me capita who pays my wages can’t claim off the government through the scheme as my job doesn’t exist anymore if Tesco had decided to furlough us that would be different

Hope that makes sense ironically I nearly did take a job at capita and they have more than one client. where I actually work only has the one that has been pulled so no hope of being transferred to a different client

Apparently Martin Lews has been giving out incorrect information according to another thread.

MrsMGE · 27/03/2020 22:48

OP is there definitely no work for you now, eg your employer is not planning to get another big client on board?

I'm asking because the Chancellor announced this today. Might be useful for those who have been made redundant recently.

Alfiemoon1 · 28/03/2020 09:22

They are working on getting another client in and we will automatically get the job and i won’t have to go through the probation period again. They already have a few in the pipeline however they have been saying that since I started 6 months ago so I won’t hold my breath
