General idea of how supermarkets are doing

I can't seem to find out anywhere a rough idea if supermarket shelves are coming back to normal after the lockdown? I was thinking the supply chain would recover fairly quickly. Anyone done an essentials shop today and would mind sharing joentheu found it?

Wow we were allowed whatever we wanted. Could only have 3 particular noodles but no limits on dairy or any other food group. I bought enough for 6 for a week and won’t need to go back.

swapsicles · 27/03/2020 16:23

Not sure I'm understanding the 3 item rule, I presumed it was 3 of the same item so no more than 3 boxes of whiskas cat food or 3 packs of bacon,
If say it's only 3 completely different ready meals or 3 different items of dairy it seems a bit ott or someone has misunderstood.

Wafflehouse · 27/03/2020 16:29

untamedwisteria that’s nonsense that your son was unaware until he got to the till. I work for Sainsbury’s and it is being made very clear the limits on items. All stores have been instructed to put up notices about the restrictions there are signs before you get in, all around the store there are signs on the shelves and a very clear tannoy played every 10 minutes. Your son can’t have been paying attention.

I’ve removed items from a few people this week because of the limits, every one of them admitted to knowing of the restrictions but hoped to get away with it.

Fucking sick of the bashing of supermarkets, I wish we could all close up and stay at home.

And for those of you going in and out of several supermarkets in a day, nice of you to give a shit about the poor bastards stuck in there and their health. Take this seriously, stop being selfish and do one shop, if you can’t get something it’ll have to wait.

Shr1nkyD1nk · 27/03/2020 16:31

So what are the rules Waffle?

And as for not going in 2 supermarkets. I’m shopping for 6 and an oap. It makes no difference going into 2 supermarkets on one day to going into 2 supermarkets on 2 different days.Confused

Snog · 27/03/2020 16:33

I went to M&S food at the station. Their shelves were pretty much full and almost no customers. Sadly it's not the kind of store where you can do a weeks worth of shopping for a family so I expect that's why.

Shr1nkyD1nk · 27/03/2020 16:33

I was in Sainsbury’s today and it was vague. Some tiny signs on a few shelves saying products were limited but didn’t say if it was a good group, a food type or a particular item. The rabbits just said there were limits.

I really would like to know the exact rules.

xdestarx · 27/03/2020 16:34

My local Aldi had no queue in the afternoon yesterday, big boxes of value penne and spaghetti (dozens of packets of each), all the tins, all meat, full loo rolls aisle. Costco also had loo roll, pasta, rice, eggs etc. So no stock issues at all, in summary.

Shr1nkyD1nk · 27/03/2020 16:34

Tannoys not rabbits.🙄

Laniakea · 27/03/2020 16:37

Lidl was okayish- no loo roll, no bread, no basic veg (broccoli carrots etc) but I did manage to get flour oil & eggs which have been missing for a while. Frozen food had lots missing - no fish fingers!

Horrible atmosphere - ppl either scared or swaggering around. Nasty.

I had to go to the pharmacy afterwards - 6 months worth of dc2’s meds to be collected - the staff looked close to tears & someone was freaking out about too many people in the shop.

Laniakea · 27/03/2020 16:38

Oh no penne but I did get a linguine!

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 27/03/2020 16:38

Apparently the local tesco was pretty well stocked

Our local asda not as good BUT with the exception of hand wash, pasta, anti bac Stuff etc the shelves had stuff on them...might not have been exactly what you wanted but you could manage if you were a smidge flexible

Did not think to check bog roll

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 27/03/2020 16:39

Lidl was okayish

Damn...really wanted flour and we passed a lidl

Tried to avoid that whole ‘need to get tinned tomatoes so i will go it 5 shops looking for them’ thing

Lifesavesocialdistance · 27/03/2020 16:49

From Mt local social network media I think it's definitely easing. After a rather slow start I'm pleased how they have now stepped up to the plate.

Lovelydovey · 27/03/2020 16:53

Couldn’t get egg noodles, peppers or orange juice yeaterday. And shelves were still relatively sparse in terms of loo roll and tinned food, and no pasta or paracetamol but got everything else I needed.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 27/03/2020 16:54

waffle

I do agree with you and i wish there was a way of doing this without any contact ...but

You are talking about Sainsburys which i think is doing the 2/3 items per person....so only 3 packs of anti bac wipes

The other poster is talking about tesco which seems to be doing no more than 3 items of anything in the same group...so 1 pack of wipes, 1 fairy dishwasher, 1 comfort but you can’t also get floor wipes cos they are in the same group which seems silly

I was in asda and a lady wanted 5 milks...the checkout lady said only 3 put them through...and then let them buy the other two in a seperate transaction

The supermarkets all seem to be having different rules...which can be confusing

But Flowers to you...its a shite state of affairs and i left retail less than a year ago and I’m so sorry many people are in this dreadful situation

And Cake

Ks0708 · 27/03/2020 16:55

Went to Sainsbury's - no toilet paper, soap, cleaning supplies, pasta, eggs. They had pretty much most other things. I guess the only way to buy this stuff now is to go early morning, but I dread being in there when it's busy.

Ginfordinner · 27/03/2020 17:05

you were only allowed 3 of any group of items

Are you sure? I think it is 3 of anything the same, so 3 pints of milk, and 3 cheeses, and 3 yogurts.

The queues and the limits will force people to go shopping more frequently and/or drive further

I think it depends on your family size or if you are buying for someone else as well. There are only three of us, and I can buy a week’s shopping quite easily, except maybe for milk and bread.

Ginfordinner · 27/03/2020 17:07

but I dread being in there when it's busy.

It won't be busy in there because of the strict number of people they allow in at a time. Hence the queues.

LightACandleHoney · 27/03/2020 17:11

My Sainsburys this morning def didn’t have that rule re: dairy as I bought 2 packs of cheddar, 1 of feta, 1 large milk, 2 buttermilk and 1 cream.

I have to say that although there was signage up, it really wasn’t clear or well placed. The big sign (with a LENGTHY message) was up right by the front door but you couldn’t get close enough to read it because the staff member manning the door was standing right in front of it, and when you got to the front of the line you had to go in as soon as you were told anyway.

@Wafflehouse - what do you propose we do? I went to 2 different stores today in order to get a full shop so that I don’t have to go out again for at least another week. I MAY go into Lidl or Asda tomorrow when I’m out for my daily walk anyway, but only if there aren’t queues and if I do go I will look for yeast and leave. If I can’t get any then I’ll give up until next week. If I had given up after Sainsburys today, and not gone to Tesco, I definitely would have needed to go back for another shop within a few days. By doing two shops in one day (and then coming home and showering/washing my clothes and bags once) I have enough food to not need to go out again for at least a week.

Next week I’m hoping to just go to one shop, but it’ll be Tesco instead of Sainsburys - very unimpressed with them this morning

StrugglingThrough2 · 27/03/2020 17:13

Just back from Asda. Not fantastically stocked, but ok. Lots of really short dates on things, so hard to do a long shop.

Queuing system to get in and wasn’t at all busy, but no trolleys Confused.

Also queuing for tills, they were implementing spacing but then the queue for the till split down two aisles, so when the queues had to merge there were lots of arguments going on. Not well organised at all!!

One massive argument which resulted in really vile language.

Then the lady at the till obviously didn’t want to be there, completely understandable, but threw our shopping through the till.

Feel asda could do better !

ZoChan · 27/03/2020 17:16

Virtually fully stocked but all the fruit and veg have short dates on and reduced- guessing the usual customers aren't coming in to buy fresh

StormyLovesOdd · 27/03/2020 17:22

I couldn't get eggs, baked beans or pasta.

Everything else is back to normal thank goodness but it was a weird experience queuing up to get in because of social distancing

Chersfrozenface · 27/03/2020 17:29

Went to a Tesco Metro today, was allowed two packs of cheese, two packs of yogurt drinks, two packs of small yogurt pots, no problem.

Got most of what I wanted. Didn't check toilet roll, paracetamol, wipes or hand sanitiser as I didn't need them.

UntamedWisteria · 27/03/2020 17:32

@Wafflehouse My son is 18, he has never had to do a full family shop on his own before. He went as he is the lowest risk person in the household.

He was aware of the 3 items rule - I'd also pre-warned him - but he thought he'd be allowed 3 packets of butter & 3 pots of yoghurt. Not 3 in total. And it certainly wasn't clear to him until he got to the checkout.

I know how hard it is for supermarket workers at the moment, and respect how hard you are all having to work, but it is a rather bizarre rule.

And just means we may have to shop again sooner than we'd hoped which increases the risk for everyone.

UntamedWisteria · 27/03/2020 17:37

I do wonder from other people's posts if it was just our branch of Sainsbury's that was applying the rules wrongly.
