Be totally honest - have you been able to stick to 2 meter rule in supermarket?

I haven't though I really tried and succeeded for most of it I think. I don't want to be within half a bastard mile of anyone. It was 6.15am. I wore gloves, masked my face, literally ran away from people and shielded myself with my trolley when possible but after measuring 2 meters it's actually quite far :-( even at the till I don't think it's 2 meters from the cashier or if we walk past each other in the aisle. Then there were guards stood outside on either side of the fucking door I must have looked a right twat running past them. I've washed my hands, wiped down the shopping and had a shower. I'm so fucking paranoid.

Simply not possible where I've been, the stores are too small to allow anyone to pass even if they walked atop the opposite shelves. :/

wherethecloudsaregoing · 27/03/2020 12:32

No, people keep walking in front of me.

PumpkinP · 27/03/2020 12:33

Find it impossible myself. People coming way to close.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 27/03/2020 12:33

I've tried to, but I've found I'll be looking for a product and suddenly a guy who looks about 80 in a face mask walks up right next to me so we're almost shoulder-to-shoulder.

Also, I was trying to keep 2m distance in the queue and then people walk in and start queueing in front of me like I'm invisible Hmm

On the other hand, we have a mid-size Co-Op near us which is apparently only letting 1 person in at a time which I think is a bit extreme.

NeverYouMind123 · 27/03/2020 12:33

I'd say 1 meter I hopefully managed but not 2 all the time. We should all wear a giant hula hoop problem solved!

I was in Sainsburys yesterday and literally everyone was in each others way.

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 27/03/2020 12:35

Yes - my local supermarket has divided the whole shop into 2m squares... only one person allowed per square.

Was like playing a bizarre game of chess especially at the intersection points. Everyone was taking it in good humour - and to be fair it was actually easier than the other one where they were just relying on people staying 2m apart.

PicsInRed · 27/03/2020 12:35

Done my best, but no.

If I see a quite elderly or vulnerable appearing person, I turn around, exit the aisle, and do another aisle until they've finished. Best you can do, really.

It's airborne though, so...

Wherehaveallthepeoplegone · 27/03/2020 12:36

I've onky been once at the beginning of the week and no people weren't sticking to it. Even out with the dh yesterday a 2 lots of couple walked by side by side on narrow paths while I stood on the grass verge to allow them to pass, but they didn't leave enough space.
They are doing a one way system in some shops though. I think onky so many people can go into an Isle at a time. Not sure how it's working. DP didn't explain ut very well xx

Pastaforall · 27/03/2020 12:36

I was surprised at how well our Tesco handled it. Very few people allowed in the store, no queues at the checkouts and trolleys/ baskets wiped before use. There was probably once I was within 1m rather than 2m and we both moved quickly once we realised.

Scruffyoak · 27/03/2020 12:36

No people kept walking in my way

Wherehaveallthepeoplegone · 27/03/2020 12:37

Ffs no kisses. I'm texting my mum at the same time here 😂

Vix20678 · 27/03/2020 12:38

No. Other people seemed oblivious to the rule and kept reaching in front of me or just getting really close.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 27/03/2020 12:58

Tried my hardest

But you can’t pass down the aisle if someone else is in it

And the pin pad for the credit card was right next to the cashier

And I completely missed the one way tape on the floor and was just going up the down aisle

I’ll do better next time

SouthWestmom · 27/03/2020 16:35

Asda taped arrows in the floor and I was the only person observing it. Even the staff were waving people past the wrong way. Some bloke in the queue to get in kept pushing his trolley right up behind me and then inside people kept stopping to chat in front of end aisles. Was really frustrating. At the long self tills everyone waited to load until the person had paid and exited except the bloke behind me who just started piling stuff up.

Going to the supermarket today an old lady who was hacking out a cough walked directly towards me and I had to veer off to give her space. Some peeple are so inconsiderate.

Makinganewthinghappen · 27/03/2020 16:48

I just went to a small local Sainsburys and the staff were really aggressively enforcing it . It was a lien of people going round in one direction and moving as fast as the front person basically.

One elderly lady left in tears but not before screaming a stream of abuse at everyone in her path.

I am actually lying down now I have literally never felt like having a panic attack in a shop before but today I very nearly did and ended up in tears to dh outside!

I have no idea why I was so upset by it it was just the atmosphere of fear and people screaming. I have told dh that next time he is going in and I will wait outside (we need to both go to carry home!) .

Strugglingtodomybest · 27/03/2020 16:49

No

madcatladyforever · 27/03/2020 16:50

During NHS shopping hour I was always 3 aisles away from anyone, there was hardly anybody in there.

Oblomov20 · 27/03/2020 16:50

Mostly no. Over the last few weeks. I keep trying but rarely manage it.

rslsys · 27/03/2020 16:52

Anyone else find themselves holding their breath when other people cross your path or come close?

BlueGheko · 27/03/2020 16:53

More or less today, but a couple of people came too close. I had my hat, glasses and mask on though Wink. Felt sorry for the check out assistant, they are putting theirselves at risk as much as NHS staff sitting their all day and obviously you can't be 2 meters away when paying.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 27/03/2020 16:53

No, people appear round corners suddenly.

I have ensured I have stayed 2m away from staff though, who I think should be getting as much applause as any other worker right now.

Frenchdoors1 · 27/03/2020 16:54

It really is hard work, some people just seem totally oblivious to it.
I'm thinking Move out the way, shift, wake-up! Hmm

WhatHappenedThen · 27/03/2020 16:55

Nearly managed it at Waitrose. It was really well organised. Big queue to get in then very few people shopping. The tills were in constant use but not long.

It was a bit annoying when more than one person from a household were shopping together - two people together were a lot harder to avoid. I understand some people may have to shop in twos but i hope people avoid it when they can.
There was a Mum with two unruly kids who were very difficult to avoid. The Mum was annoyed with her kids and clearly frustrated with everything. I don’t know her circumstances so didn’t do any Mumsnet judging.....

It was easier to shop than usual.
