Changes to waste collection

My council are no longer collecting food waste or garden waste because of the virus. The local tip has also been closed. I’m getting concerned about the waste that will build up. Don’t have the space to store it either if the other collections get stopped too.

Mine is the opposite, they are collecting food and garden waste and not making paper and plastic a priority. My garage is going to be full of plastic by the time this is over!

TheGreatWave · 27/03/2020 11:25

I posted about this last night, it is a worry. The tip is closed and bulky waste collections have been stopped, there is going to be a massive rise in fly tipping.

APurpleSquirrel · 27/03/2020 11:27

Our council is collecting food waste, recycling & black bin but not garden waste, & tips are closed.

KittenVsBox · 27/03/2020 11:35

If you have enough of a garden to produce garden waste, can you make a compost area? That will also take much of the food waste. The rest of the food waste can go in the none recyclable bin?

If you dont have a garden, food waste can go in the none recyclable bin?

BarbaraofSeville · 27/03/2020 11:36

Ours is doing non recyclable and recycling but not garden waste and tip is closed, which is annoying because we wanted to have a clear out.

I would have thought that tips were easy to run and meet social distancing plus they're just asking for an increase in fly tipping - we won't do that obviously but many will.

Their solution to no garden waste collection is to just let the grass grow Hmm. But obviously they're not offering to help in a few weeks time when it's a foot high and completely unmanagable.

I don’t mind about the garden waste not being collected.

Been told to put the food waste in the regular bin. Seems strange to do that after training myself to save all the peelings, tea bags etc!

No space for compost unfortunately.

Of all the things I miss in this current time it is the tip.

I have a huge pile of cardboard and wood and paint cans that need going to the tip now forming a large pile in the middle of my front garden.

I am thinking if I can set fire to it I might be able to get rid of a lot of it.

RaininSummer · 28/03/2020 08:42

It is a pain. I cut an over excited dwarf conifer down two days before lockdown and have six bags stacked in my tiny yard now. My compost bin is already full and no space for another. Hopefully they will reopen the dumps for a while in a month or so.

sueelleker · 28/03/2020 08:46

Our garden waste has been stopped; they missed our regular waste last week, but picked it up yesterday. If they'd missed it again, I was going to start putting black bin bags in the garden waste wheelie as a temporary measure (lots of foxes round our way)

MiracletoCome · 28/03/2020 08:53

All our waste collection is still running normally at the moment, tip is closed, I have been trying to keep on top of rubbish this last couple of weeks and we done an extra tip trip before lockdown. I keep tell DH not to hoard rubbish as our collections could be cut at any time, not sure he is listening though

Same here regarding food and garden waste. No area to compost, a toddler still in nappies and a baby due with a tiny grey bin. I'm the same as you Amazemae, can't get my head in the bin! I'm not sure why they've decided to ditch the collection of something that will start to smell and could attract vermin?

theseriousmoonlight · 28/03/2020 09:02

*Can't get my head around putting food in the bin
