Cynical view but the package they giving self employed people (not till June) is this because they hedging their bets that quite a lot of people would have died by June so would cost the govt less money?

No! Not at all. They clearly explained this yesterday. They are giving people 4 weeks to get their tax return in if they are late from the january deadline. This cannot be managed overnight. It is going to take time to set the system up and get staff to go through checking returns etc......

I am most definitely no Tory supporter but don’t be ridiculous!

We’re pretty much in April already - these things take time to implement

The are giving 4 weeks to get tax returns in that should have been in, in January.
However, I don't see why that should delay things for the majority that did get them in in time. They could start to get those out now.

tiggertogger · 27/03/2020 09:43

You can get universal credit without the 5 delay until then

Emmalou88 · 27/03/2020 09:44

Omg this is what my partner said too. He is very negative being self employed and having to go into self isolation for 3 months (starting 2 weeks ago) due to his severe health conditions. Has no earnings and said if he catches it, it will wipe him out.. which it would. Sad

Marieo · 27/03/2020 09:45

No, it's just an administrative nightmare and will take time to get into place. Usually something like this would take ages to implement, so although June seems a long way away and it's actually impressive.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 27/03/2020 09:45

I imagine given the almighty fuck up that is universal credit both generally and now that there just isn't capacity to do it until then

Bloomburger · 27/03/2020 09:47

It's just a huge logistical nightmare on top of a system that is already under huge strain, its nothing to do with hoping someone of the claimants will be dead.

MarchMare · 27/03/2020 09:48

No. They are prioritising the employed as that is the vast bulk of the working population. As PPs say, it also gives people a bit of time to submit tax returns to bring them in to eligibility.

maralough · 27/03/2020 09:49

I'm not generally a fan of the government but I think this is pretty offensive.

CrapTVAddict · 27/03/2020 09:55

Didn't Dominic Cummings allegedly say if pensioners die so what for the sake of herd immunity.
Don't know why people think the govt wouldn't think like this after all their austerity policies

loobyloo1234 · 27/03/2020 09:58

What a dreadful post OP

Self employed people are being given help. They would also presumably be putting money aside to pay their taxes when due. I would think that is what the Government also think. The payments will be backdated to cover this loss to their 'money put aside' in June. At the latest - which they have said

loobyloo1234 · 27/03/2020 09:59

And I would rather eat my own crap than vote Tory but you are being very unreasonable here

Costacoffeeplease · 27/03/2020 10:02

This is probably the most batshit post on here, in a very crowded race

Grow up op

Oceans12isCrap · 27/03/2020 10:07

No, of course it isn’t and what a strange thing to think.

It’s actually so that more self employed people can access support, by giving them an extra four weeks to submit their tax returns.

After this four week period, they will start to process the financial support.

Ladymuck · 27/03/2020 10:09

HMRC are also working from home whilst implementing this.

Bojo1 · 27/03/2020 10:12

whatever the tories do will be wrong 🙄
