Contagion - poor taste?!

Contagion is on tonight. Basically it's a movie depicting an identical situation to what we are currently going through. It's pretty horrific in places.

What are ITV2 thinking? As if people weren't anxious enough!

Anyone who is very anxious about Coronavirus please don't watch this movie.

I watched it on DVD last night. I also watched Outbreak the other night, but then I'm a bit weird and fascinated wth disease and epidemiology

MagicKingdomDizzy · 26/03/2020 20:52

I worry some people might stumble onto it flicking through channels.

It's frightening how close to Coronavirus it is, despite being made over 10 years ago.

Have not seen Outbreak, probably best for my mental health that I don't!

That’s either seriously bad taste or very black humour.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 26/03/2020 20:56

Apparently it has followed the science very closely. So it isn’t, as silly as people keep saying, spookily accurate, but a well researched and written story line. Any pandemic would be similar to it.

One consolation, might be the fact that people watching it will finally understand why the government is making new laws to protect us.

MrsSnitchnose · 26/03/2020 20:58

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily I actually just had that very thought. Perhaps it's timely to show how easily these things spread and get people to stay away from each other

NemophilistRebel · 26/03/2020 20:59

28 days later would be the less accurate version of life following pandemic

MagicKingdomDizzy · 26/03/2020 21:05

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily

I agree, a very well written and researched film. I just think the timing is poor.

Though, perhaps it might make people take things more seriously.

There have been other pandemics in the past that aren't respiratory based, so I suppose this hits home as it's so relatable to what we are currently going through.

It is bad taste but im going to watch it lol

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 26/03/2020 21:06

That’s more representative of our city centre after chucking out time. 🤣

OffToSingapore · 26/03/2020 21:08

I thought it was quite funny personally Grin

I've never heard of the film before, but I'm giving it a watch now.

ocarinan · 26/03/2020 21:11

You could always not watch it. The title gives a clue as to what it's about.

And it's the second most popular film rental on google play and fifth on itunes right now, so that's probably why they're showing it. Because a lot of people want to watch it.

FlushedZebra · 26/03/2020 21:13

Contagion is frighteningly accurate, in some ways. They even call it a SARS at some point I think.

My DD came across this yonks ago when it was on Prime for free - she loved it - possibly the young girl (the DD of Gwyneth Paltrow's DH?) - and begged us to buy it for her, because it's no longer free to watch. We did because meh, she'd seen it already.

It's no worse that what's on the news right now - which is far more alarming. All the DC and me had a chat about this today - my DS18 said e are living history right now - and he's right. Unprecedented times.

Namechangervaver · 26/03/2020 21:14

Thanks for the heads up. Recording now

MagicKingdomDizzy · 26/03/2020 21:16

Namechangervaver

Grin happy to help.

I'm watching it now.

I did spend my weekend the other week reading a book about the Spanish flu as I find this all (scarily) fascinating.

MrsSnitchnose · 26/03/2020 21:19

@DrMadelineMaxwell It's not the one by John M Barry is it? If so, I'm listening to that on Audible right now

DartmoorChef · 26/03/2020 21:21

I think its been put on purposely to make people realise how quickly a virus can spread. Maybe some of the idiots who keep going out might think twice now.

MabelMoo23 · 26/03/2020 21:27

I’m watching it. Mainly because I’m fascinated and it feels more relevant now sadly then just being a Hollywood movie.

And if it makes just one dickhead realise how quickly these things spread then it’s a good thing

Eireni · 26/03/2020 21:30

I rewatched this a month or so ago when I was laid up with severe cough-fever-breathlessness, reassuring myself it was just a normal bug and not Covid19 because NHS111 said it couldn’t be as I hadn’t traveled anywhere.

I don’t think I could watch it again now that shit has got real (or, real has got shit as I heard someone say!). Not good for mental well-being if you’re already massively worried about it all.

Eireni · 26/03/2020 21:31

It is a good movie. About the only thing I like Gwyneth in.

Oh apart from Sliding Doors. Might watch that tonight instead actually.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 26/03/2020 21:34

Eireni

Hope you are feeling better now.

It definitely has a good cast!

I don't think it's poor taste. I think it's clever broadcasting. Because the film wouldn't have been expensive to purchase (they might have already had rights to it anyway) it keeps people occupied while stuck in and it fills gaps left by production on tv shows being reduced. Not everybody has streaming sites and internet is playing up for a lot of people due to more people using it all at once. Some companies have realised this and the new Disney + has been modified to play well on slower bandwidth. Everybody is adapting as best they can.

Much better than a zombie virus film

Igotthemheavyboobs · 26/03/2020 21:36

Well I'm pissed off as I only just paid to rent it on bloody Prime!

Eireni · 26/03/2020 21:36

Kate Winslett is excellent in it

If you want a more fun/less shit-scary cos less realistic apocalyptic-plague movie, watch the 1994 version of The Stand, it’s all available on YouTube. Best use of “don’t fear the reaper” ever in the opening Grin

Eireni · 26/03/2020 21:37

Oh much better thanks, still tire easily but ok. I’ll be very interested to get my hands on a Covid-19 antibody test!
