The 7 day rule

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question but I'm unclear on the 7 day isolation rule. It says 7 days from when symptoms start, but I can't find anything around what to do if the symptoms are still there after day 7? Do I stay off sick or am I expected back to work because I'm no longer contagious?

Stay off until symptoms ease, except for a cough as that could last weeks.

I think that’s correct.

You stay off until you no longer have a temperature. The cough can last for a while

I’ve had a cough for 3 weeks, and have been erring on the side of caution and not going out! I know that I’m not considered a risk after this time but I’m worried people will look at me in disgust if I go anywhere with a cough!

HolyChickpea · 26/03/2020 21:24

Thank you! Is that written anywhere? I can't see it on the gov website.

After 7 days, if the first person to become ill feels better and no longer has a high temperature, they can return to their normal routine

The cough may persist for several weeks in some people, despite the coronavirus infection having cleared. A persistent cough alone does not mean someone must continue to self-isolate for more than 7 days.

Sorry if this is a thick question- DD had a cough that started last Thursday. Its gone now and she's absolutely fine but she actually had a runny nose/cold symptoms from the Tuesday. Do I take the seven days from the cough starting or the day she started feeling under the weather?

HolyChickpea · 27/03/2020 06:43

Dementedpixie - Thanks so much.
Sabrina - It sounds like 7 days from the cough starting and if she doesn't have a temperature after day 7 you can end isolation.

7 days from start of symptoms for person 1.
Rest of household must S.I for 14 days.
