I’ve just been told off for panic buying

I had a super market delivery 3 weeks ago. It was a large one as I had asked four other households did they want to share with my delivery.
So I had groceries for myself, family and neighbours.

Another neighbour who I don’t know has come over to remonstrate with me. I explained and I think they believe me.

I feel very awkward now. I have another delivery tomorrow and I have done the same thing again. It was all ordered a couple of weeks ago before the neighbour complained. I wonder if I should cancel?
We need the groceries as I’m in an at risk group, I have ordered items for a pregnant lady up the road and for my sister and brother who have asthma and are self isolating.

What a mess.

I think that's a marvellous thing you've done, in stark contrast to the panic buyers who nicked all the bog roll.

My DSis is bringing me 2 toilet rolls tomorrow (along with pet supplies she ordered online for me) cos my local supermarket only does them in 9s at the mo and my bum ain't that big! Don't worry, she's leaving it on the doorstep for me.

JellyXwellies · 26/03/2020 17:50

Tell her it's a shared slot and to mind her own Business. Nosey cow.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 26/03/2020 17:51

They can fuck right off. You're potentially saving lives (literally) by lessening the infection risk with fewer trips to the supermarket and fewer delivery drop offs.

They're just looking to have a go.

ButteryPuffin · 26/03/2020 17:53

This doesn't make any sense if it happened 3 weeks ago. Shopping was still relatively normal then.

Beautiful3 · 26/03/2020 17:53

Dont cancel. Its noone elses business.

speakout · 26/03/2020 17:53

How does your neighbour know?

Few of my neighbours even know my name.

Snugglepumpkin · 26/03/2020 17:56

I also order things to go in food parcels which are sent out to families who can't get anything themselves in my pre booked slots.
They were booked before anyone who doesn't normally shop online for food even thought to try & even if I didn't get things for other people, I still want fresh milk, fruit & veg if I can get it so I wouldn't be freeing up a slot if I didn't 'share' it.

If everyone who got a delivery slot ordered for more than just themselves there would be a lot less people trying to get delivery slots.

coconuttelegraph · 26/03/2020 17:56

You don't need to know your neighbours name to use your eyes to see the delivery driver dropping off a huge delivery. I'm sure where I live isn't unique in being able notice if a driver was making many many trips backwards and forwards from the van with numerous trays.

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2020 17:56

Agree it makes no sense, if the order was delivered three weeks ago, before the restrictions, and tomorrow’s order placed two weeks ago, why has the neighbour just come over since that order placed to bollock the op. Makes no sense at all.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 26/03/2020 18:00

None of their business. Just ignore.

Out of curiosity, those that are buying for several families how in earth are you managing that with the limits in place? Unless nothing overlaps (unlikely) how does it work. I think I could just about manage to get food for me and one other family but no more than that and especially not 6 as someone upthread stated.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/03/2020 18:00

So your neighbor broke the order to stay at home and potentially violated social distancing to come over and tell you off? Yeah, excellent decision making skills there.

madcatladyforever · 26/03/2020 18:00

I bought a months worth of shopping this morning in NHS happy hour because I only go out once a month as I'm working in the NHS daily and too knackered even to go for a daily walk.
It looked like a lot of shopping but it really wasn't. I felt so guilty I just slunk out.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 26/03/2020 18:03

I was waiting at a bus stop today (just waiting) as a vulnerable customer needed a food parcel, and he knew where the bus stop was, a women in her car stopped and started shouting at me I was ""putting people at risk for using public transport..."" Im not sure how she thinks non drivers who are key workers should get to their employment.

Apparently people should just use Taxi's Hmm

Tbh I walked there (10 mins from office)

ChickLitLover · 26/03/2020 18:07

I explained and I think they believe me.

Don’t explain, just close the door whilst telling her to fuck off

Hippee · 26/03/2020 18:08

I think the panic buying is levelling off - I was in Morrison's today and I only saw purchase limits on meat, frozen veg and tins. Still didn't have loo roll though.

Madamum18 · 26/03/2020 18:11

Ofcourse you don't cancel. Your plan is a very good way of reducing the need for people to go out and go to the shops. Your neighbour and their views are irrelevant. Ignore them and carry on being sensible!!

FallonSwift · 26/03/2020 18:13

Supermarkets near me have now introduced social distancing - crowd control barriers and a strict policy on the number of people allowed in at any one time. Tesco has a 3 item limit on absolutely everything in the store. They had most stuff available today apart from beans and pasta.

SarahInAccounts · 26/03/2020 18:14

Coronavirus really has legitimised busy bodies

And nowhere more so than on mumsnet. The virus police are pathetic.

We stocked up before the panic buying started and have a big delivery coming at the weekend. No one's business but ours.

Queeftastic · 26/03/2020 18:15

Have confidence in what you're doing, and don't allow a rude neighbour to undermine your thoughtfulness.

Soulstirring · 26/03/2020 18:17

Drives me insane. Don’t panic buy but also don’t leave the house unnecessarily. Which do you want?

Fully appreciate the supermarkets and staff are working incredibly hard but until they can recruit and match demand in deliveries I will be ‘bulk buying’

Krisskrosskiss · 26/03/2020 18:20

That's awful hope you're okay.. people shouldnt be so judgemental... I've been saying this constantly on social media... you dont know why someone is buying what they are buying and who they are buying it for! And I genuinely believe there havent been that many mental panic buyers in the grand scheme of things.. it's actually just that most people decided to get some long life goods because they might have to quarantine.. and because hundreds of thousands of people did that at once its fucked the supply chains and it's taking a while to catch up... the media are just whipping up extra drama and shit stirring.. because people are so afraid its comforting to have something tangible to be angry at like 'selfish people buying too much bog roll'

lurkingfromhome · 26/03/2020 18:27

But three weeks ago it was a completely different world. I had 10 people over for dinner one night, then a load of house guests the next night and went to the supermarket three times in the space of a weekend with nothing out of the ordinary at all. The current restrictions and general panic didn't start until way after that.

Why is your neighbour now remonstrating with you about something that happened weeks ago when everything was quite normal? That's completely insane.

curlymom · 26/03/2020 18:42

Don’t cancel. You will never get another slot! Honestly it’s up to you, everyone else can mind their own business! Hard times, of course you need to do a shop!

cassgate · 26/03/2020 18:45

I am doing the same. I am buying for 3 households. Ours, my pils and DH’s 93 year old aunt. I have also offered to get bits for work colleagues (key worker-school). The biggest frustration is the 3 product limit. I am prioritising the pil’s and dh’s aunt but both have asked for bananas and only loose bananas available so can only order 3.

ChipotleBlessing · 26/03/2020 18:45

Her neighbour isn’t remonstrating for her for anything. It’s very clearly made up.
