Employer cutting salary? Legal?

DH’s employer wants essential staff to continue doing the same job for 80% of their previous salary in order to prop up the business finances. Is this legal? Staff are furious because they’re saying if the company can’t afford to pay them full salary then the company should get a government loan, or they should be put on furlough.

The employer has already put the less essential staff on furlough. So they’re receiving 80% of their salary for sitting on their bums while others are being asked to accept 80% but still work. Unsurprisingly staff aren’t happy.
