What are your procedures for avoiding handling the post and parcels in case they are infected.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 20:53

Can you not just open the post then wash your hands?

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 25/03/2020 20:57

We were binning outer packaging on the doorstep and washing hands
But how do we know how long ago the paper was touched inside 😨. It lasts 3 days on cardboard so Im not sure if the paper is safe.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 20:59

Its 24 hours on cardboard

I've been opening on doorstep , binning envelopes and dropping contents in a box by front door to read a couple of days later.

duffeldaisy · 25/03/2020 21:04

We've been removing outside envelopes/packaging into the recycling, then going over everything with an antibacterial wipe if it's papery and needs to be kept, or with soapy water on kitchen roll if it's wipeable.
Anything not wipeable we've been putting on top of a cupboard in quarantine - were going by 9 days, as I heard on the radio that that was the time for some cardboard, but am possibly being over-paranoid.

Then obv wash hands with soapy water, and also wash down the door knocker, letterbox etc for the post-person too.

adiposegirl2 · 25/03/2020 21:06

I spray with 70% alcohol and open with disposable gloves

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 25/03/2020 21:09

I didnt think antibac wipes did anything?

The 3 hours in the air bothers me. If mr tesco delivers we have to bring it in rather than leave it on the doorstep for 3 hours.

DesLynamsMoustache · 25/03/2020 21:10

I just open it as normal then put packaging in outside bin and wash hands, making sure I don't touch my face or anything else between opening and washing. I think you can drive yourself a bit mad with it all, so I'm comfortable with that.

PowerslidePanda · 25/03/2020 21:28

It goes in the quarantine box by the front door for 24 hours, then we open it, carefully dispose of the packaging and wash hands thoroughly.

CouldItBeCorona · 25/03/2020 21:46

Are all you people also wiping down / washing every bit of grocery shopping that comes into the house?

TwigTheWonderKid · 28/03/2020 18:31

@CoulditBeCorona I am washing all the fridge/freezer stuff. Everything else goes in the shed for 3 days. Can't work out if it's over the top or inadequate...

bengalcat · 28/03/2020 18:31

I take no extra precautions

bucketofgin · 28/03/2020 18:37

Open it and wash my hands.

SwimForBrighterDays · 28/03/2020 18:46

Today mixed in with the post was a dominos flyer.

Before anyone had a chance to get to the door my 3 year old had picked it up, shouted "oooooo pizza!" And then licked it.

Mrworried7 · 28/03/2020 19:16

Open it, read it, Bin 95% of it and if anything needs keeping, put it somewhere out of sight for a while. Wash hands straight after

coronade · 28/03/2020 19:26

My postie has disposable plastic gloves on today. Also saw a virologist on the BBC this morning and I’m sure he said the risk was very very minor of catching it off post as it is moved around so much the virus would be unlikely to last for more than a few hours. He said washing hands after opening it was sufficient.

RogueV · 28/03/2020 19:27

No extra precautions here either.

chickedeee · 28/03/2020 19:29

No extra precautions here. Smile

DateAndWalnuts · 28/03/2020 19:35

Vinyl gloves before I handle it.
