How likely am I to get it now?

My DS (6) has had a cough (on/off not all the time) since Monday. He also has a runny nose. I am a single mum and have health issues that put me on the shielded list.
How likely is it to be coronavirus? It seems very mild for him. If it is how likely am I to catch it from him?

The symptoms to look for are high temperature and a new persistant cough- does he have either?

Gogoberry · 25/03/2020 18:37

No fever. As I said he’s had a cough (as in coughing a few times a day) for 3 days. Seems a bit more tired than usual. Runny nose. I’m just scared that if I get it I’m more than likely not going to be fine. There isn’t anyone else to look after him or his brother.

Can anyone give any advice? I’m terrified I’m going to die and leave my children without a mother.

OP, I don't think anyone on here will be able to say for certain whether your DS has it or what the risk is for you.I'm bumping this thread up for you.

The only thing I'd say is try not to worry too much as this won't help you right now. I don't want to give you wrong advice because the NHS should be in touch with you if you are shielded. Have you checked the resources on gov.uk in the meantime?

Everything will be ok, stay calm Flowers

PurpleRainGirl I can’t shield as the government require me to unfortunately. They want you to stay away from people in your own household but I’m alone with two young children. I’ve tried to isolate us as a household but now I think it’s too late because both are snotty and DS is coughing.

Don't worry. Wash your hands often. Wash his hands often and keep everything clean. It is not inevitable that you will catch whatever bug he has. You are unlikely to die, even if you do catch coronavirus.

I think we may have had it.
Dd2 had a fever low grade for a couple of days with a small vomit. She did start to get a green shorty nose very thick.
Then about 7 days later a cough.
At about that point I got a fever overnight then next day tight chest heavy feeling. That mostly lasted 14d.

There is no way to know if your dc have it without testing. Not sure if the advice for people shielding if they are in contact.
Try not to panic though as for us so far dd1 didn't get it nor dp.
But if you suspect it definitely try to spend as much time apart from them as possible. Open Windows and clean surfaces as if you do get it viral load can make a difference
