Do you think there will be riots?

I’m quite surprised there haven’t been any yet! Do you think people will just snap eventually of being stuck inside and rebel against the lockdown?

OP posts:
Straycatstrut · 25/03/2020 19:01

food, booze and the internet keeps running

The 3 things keeping my sanity stuck inside as the only adult, with primary aged hyperactive boys and a young high energy dog!

Got myself 3x bottles of my favourite wine on order and I can't wait for it after this week! One small glass of it is bliss, so will make them last hopefully! Grin

Ex lives 100 miles away in another city and doesn't drive (gets his parents to do it all) so access is cut off to him -not that he's bothered, isn't even making an attempt to video call or engage with me about it! But it's going to feel SO alien when they eventually do go to him. I'm already so used to having them with me 24/7 - and it's lovely to see them growing closer because of it. They're really lucky they have each other at the moment.

MrsNettle · 25/03/2020 19:12

I'm not sure about riots as such but I predict burglaries, shoplifting and DV to rise significantly over the coming months. At work I deal with a lot of people who broke the law, usually low level stuff but some assaults too. Most of them struggled financially, either working PT jobs on zero hours contracts or being on benefits before it all started. Sooner or later they will have fuck all and nothing to lose really. No money and nothing to keep themselves occupied.
Northern Ireland prison service has also announced today that they are 'reducing' the number of prisoners to reduce the risk of spreading CV on prisons. Guess how they 'reduced' their numbers.
It's also quite naive to think that there will be fewer burglaries because people are at home.
I hope I'm wrong though.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/03/2020 19:14

No one riots in March.

I think drugs, sex work, domestic violence, theft, will all be ones to watch.

Kuponut · 25/03/2020 19:52

I think we're close. Society's split down the middle with the self-appointed enforcers versus the rule-breakers and social media is full of people judging/shaming/harassing others for what they are/aren't doing.

We've had a massive upsurge in petty behaviour - about 20 bins set fire in the local area the other day and the police now out patrolling open spaces. It feels very very on-edge - and add in there's nothing really to distract from mulling it all over now as well. Once lost income and jobs really start to bite, and someone pipes up at someone else doing what they feel they shouldn't be doing - I think it could well start to kick off.

Our very local area are still bickering over dogshit though.

LuluJakey1 · 25/03/2020 19:55

I think there will definitely be social unrest - probably when the police have to break--up social gatherings in challenging areas, or in a few weeks time when groups are really suffering the financial distress this will cause.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/03/2020 19:58

And your evidence for all the above is what exactly? Just blatant scaremongering

Oh yeah , obvs . Nothing better to do with my time .

Or maybe try
A: I live in an Outer London Borough
B: I have seen way too many reports of shootings, knife attacks , terrorist attacks - including being less than a mile of attacks .
The 2011 riots were sustained and frightening , the effects were far reaching.
C: we were asked for an opinion. I have one . .Do you think there will be riots ? Yes.

CaptainBrickbeard · 25/03/2020 20:02

I wondered about things like county lines, drugs and gangs - not that I know much about them anyway. But if groups of people can’t congregate easily, will they turn to other kinds of crime?

I’ve also seen a couple of reports of frightening behaviour like youths spitting/coughing at elderly, NHS staff mugged for their lanyards, robberies of food bank and school and the vandalism of ambulances along with oxygen theft at a hospital as well. All of those really unsettled me. So much good comes out in a crisis but the dark side of humans really rears its head as well. I think lockdown is our only option and I agree with it but can also see a lot of bored, frustrated, angry, violent, stressed out people doing some terrible things. And some opportunistic criminals exploiting any chances to profit. I don’t imagine riots though unless there are significant ongoing shortages. And what a horrifying way to spread the virus a mass gathering to riot would be - doesn’t bear thinking about.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/03/2020 20:02

No one riots in March

Why not ?

The Police are being given more powers .
Somebody will resent or react to being stopped from doing something against the rules of the Lockdown.

Someone will get shot , tazered , injured .
There will be a reaction.
Riot .
.

OddBoots · 25/03/2020 20:03

I hope not but nothing would surprise me after so many idiots stockpiled toilet roll for a virus that hits your chest not your bowels.

nagynolonger · 25/03/2020 20:16

So long as the food suppy is ok and people have money we will be ok for a while at least.

Extremes of weather could cause problems if people are still locked down in a hot summer. We could of course still have a late winter with heavy snow and power cuts. It has happened before in April, Our power was off for a week once at the end of April because of snow.

Pishposhpashy · 25/03/2020 20:45

I live in an Outer London Borough

So what exactly has that got to do with anything? I live in Lewisham. Born in Hackney. Lived in London my whole life.

Chosennone · 25/03/2020 20:58

Armed Forces will be ready for civil disobedience

Doobydoo · 25/03/2020 21:03

I really think having a UBI would help massively. At the moment people are v v scared.

DioneTheDiabolist · 25/03/2020 21:06

No riots till the marching season starts. It's traditional.Hmm

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/03/2020 21:09

Pish I have no fucking clue why you've decided to home in on my posts .

I have an opinion. I am entitled to it .

My family live in quiet idylic villages which I dare say will not see riots .
You think there won't be
I think there will be .
I'm not wishing riots but I predict there will be ,

I am not the cause of any affrays so just get off my back, yeah Hmm

Pishposhpashy · 25/03/2020 21:11

If you don't want anyone to pull you up on scaremongering then don't scaremonger. It's a public forum. I can comment on whatever I like.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/03/2020 21:20

I'm not stopping you saying what you like .
But I'm not scaremongering .
Riots happen.
Remember the riots after the shooting of Mark Duggan?

One man's death sparked widespread riots .

There is going to be a climate of unrest .
There are even cases of NHS workers being mugged for lanyards !
There are already cases of looting in locked shops .

Or you can just pretend everything is hunky dory .

TrainspottingWelsh · 25/03/2020 21:22

It's possible, but I imagine they'd only be on a local scale and contained relatively quickly, at least in the uk.
I wouldn't be surprised if the USA had them on a larger scale in some states. The uk is far from perfect but a lack of healthcare and welfare there makes it a very different ballgame.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 25/03/2020 21:57

Trying to maintain faith in humanity that if 405,000 people have offered to volunteer, help, support etc in less than 24 hours then let’s hope there are no riots

Blibbyblobby · 25/03/2020 22:00

They are on standby in North London for civil unrest. (Friend in emergency services).

I think there will be looting of closed businesses. We've had at least one locally already (also North London)

Lifesavesocialdistance · 25/03/2020 22:04

Captain that's an awful list, people attacking ambulances!

For goodness sake.

Maybe we need some un seasonable cold weather...

Goawayquickly · 25/03/2020 22:04

Very possible if people aren't properly looked after financially.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/03/2020 22:23

Maybe we need some un seasonable cold weather...

What you want is rain. No one riots in the rain. Hot weather makes them more likely. Rain makes them much less likely.

BanKittenHeels · 26/03/2020 09:49

Oh fgs not this again

And this is what people said about posts regarding coronavirus 2 months ago.

People in my area are walking into shops and walking out with baskets of food without paying. The police asked the shop assistants not the challenge them. They are doing this in their hundreds.

They have burnt supermarket vans to the ground. Slashed ambulance tires and are smashing into car windows to steal tissues, change and sweets.

Pishposhpashy · 26/03/2020 09:57

And this is what people said about posts regarding coronavirus 2 months ago.

I didn't, I took it seriously from the start.

I live in a very deprived area of London and it has been peace and quiet. I prefer not to speculate. What purpose does it serve, other than to frighten people?
