Time for symptoms to show

DO we know yet the answers to the following questions?

How long from catching virus symptoms might show?

How long from catching virus until it could become serious enough to warrant hospital?

If catching it leaves you immune to catching it again

If catching it, then recovering means you won't pass it on once out of the infectious stage

I think symptoms show between 4 and 23 days and people can be completely asymptomatic (though fairly rare)

not enough knowledge on if it even does create immunity yet

Thanks, @lubey

Think that is what is making this all so hard - no clear defining features of the virus so that you could know if you have had it or not. I think there is now an expectation that it might be worse than first thought.

Here’s the recent study on the time to show symptoms:

An analysis of publicly available data on infections from SARS-CoV-2 estimates 5.1 days as the median incubation period for COVID-19, according to researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

About 97.5% of people who develop symptoms of COVID-19 will do so within 11.5 days of exposure. The researchers estimated that for every 10,000 individuals quarantined for 14 days, only about 101 would develop symptoms after being released from quarantine (Ann Intern Med 2019 Mar 9. [Epub ahead of print]).

5.1 days as the median incubation period

11.5 days of exposure.

So, how are 97% showing symptoms within 11.5 days but the median is 5.1?

I know the median is not the average but it seems a big jump from 5.1 to 11.5 days.

It’s not that big a jump: about a 50% rate after 5 days, then close to 100% after 11.5 days. If you drew the data on a graph it wouldn’t be a perfectly straight line, with a long flatter part at the top for the last few percentage points.

@Cendrillon Cheers - that makes sense
