Homeschooling and the iPad

The tasks set by children's teachers require a fair amount of iPad time. DD9, can manage this. DS, 5 - yes, only 5 - cannot handle iPad time at all. It's actually disturbing.

The moment it gets taken away I have to deal with screaming meltdowns. In the past, this has resulted me in banning use of the iPad entirely. But I can't do that now because all his peers are using it and DD needs it too. His current tantrum is now lasting about 30 mins.

I've tried setting a timer, giving iPad time as a reward for good behaviour etc but can't find a solution he respects. He will promise not to have a tantrum before he starts, but always does when times up. He knows if he screams then the iPad will be taken away, but he does it anyway. Today, as a result of his behaviour, he has been told no iPad time at all tomorrow.

The only thing that has worked in the past is ZERO time on the iPad, and enduring five days of hell before he adjusts.

It is REALLY getting me down. It's such a war and I can't stand it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
