Self-isolation timing question - 7days vs 14

Am a little confused

The 7-day isolation is if you have symptoms

The 14-day isolation is if a member of your family has symptoms

So. If a family member has symptoms and you start 14 days. Then, on day 3, you get symptoms too. Do you then switch to your own 7-day isolation? So by day 10 (3+7) you could go back to work, if well enough - talking an exempted/keyworker job here? Even though other asymptomatic members of your family would still be isolating another 4 days?
Have we got that right?

Yes you switch to your own 7 day period once you have developed symptoms

The 14 day period is to allow for the full potential incubation period of the virus.

'for anyone else in the household who starts displaying symptoms, they need to stay at home for 7 days from when the symptoms appeared, regardless of what day they are on in the original 14 day isolation period'

So yes, your own seven days of isolation. So original days 'served' plus seven.

Thankyou that graphic makes much more sense than the other ones I’ve seen!

Phew, we need her back Grin

Sucks for the guy that gets symptoms on day 13 though.

Funny thing is I know exactly how virus incubation/shedding etc works, in minute medical detail, but so stressed by it all at the moment that I flummoxed myself overthinking this question!

Thanks vipers for quick clear answers :-)
