Hi, quick corona related question.

Bargain Booze in my local small shopping area have stayed open, my young sister works there and has been told if she doesn't work she will lose her job.

We have 8 supermarkets around us, this is not the only shop that sells alcohol.

Should this shop remain open? She's really anxious that she's being put at risk.

They don't sell newspapers, gas/electric, any food other than sweets.

My mum is going out of her mind with worry

I'd like to think the Govt will urgently put a stop to this sort of thing by saying Only Supermarkets and Pharmacies to open. This will hopefully happen today or tomorrow. In the meantime, I hope your young sister stays safe. It's a shitty situation that many people are finding themselves in and needs sorting urgently.

Surely this shop is contravening the government rules? They don't fall into a category that is allowed to remain open do they?

I wouldn't go into work. I'd sooner be sacked and I would try and get a job instead in one of the supermarkets that are recruiting right now.

If they are flouting the rules then I would report them to the police. Name and shame on Facebook and hope that people will boycott them in the future when things are back to normal.

It's a non essential shop. It should be closed. No way would I go into work.

maa1992 · 25/03/2020 10:16

Can I report them to the police? I really don't want her at risk.

The government clarified this morning that off licences are essential shops.

maa1992 · 25/03/2020 10:20

@Rosehip10 ah, I couldn't find it on the gov website. I didn't think they'd be essential due to alcohol being widely available in supermarkets.

@maa1992 see the latest guidance at www.gov.uk/government/publications/further-businesses-and-premises-to-close

Clear excemption for off licenses so they can stay open.

Basically your sister would need to resign if she didn't want to work there anymore - as they are open they will expect employees to attend work (not saying I agree with this at all, but the government seem obsessed with people being able to buy alcohol)
