Is no one even a little concerned about the intrusion and removal of freedoms?

I know needs must and we're in a real crisis situation but it does make me a little uneasy to see how easy it has been to remove all freedoms.

The real shocker for me today was the text messages. I've spent the last year or so working on GDPR stuff and all the "threats" associated with that. Who gave the government all our numbers?!

I know it's insignificant in the scheme of things now but is it right that it's so easy?

Beijing what’s the difference in your percentage if they do nothing v what they are doing now?

HennyPenny4 · 29/03/2020 08:08

My FIL saw the police walk up to a man sitting on the grass at Hyde Park yesterday and tell him he needed to walk or go home

I'm irritated at having to post this but the point is you can go outside to shop for food, visit pharmacy or exercise - how many times do people have to be told FGS the man was not doing this.
Why do people think they are little special people who can do what THEY like when everyone else is following the RULES.

Or @MarginalGain do you think these little special snowflakes who walk in the National Parks or sit in the parks are quite entitled to flout the guidelines - yes? ok let's ALL flout the guidelines......

I wonder if any of the people who are worried about government intervention are benefiting from the financial support they have agreed? Or will benefit from the new hospital ITU space?

I think you can be worried about something and that not be exactly the same as total disagreement with it.

Unquestioning, automatic compliance with no checks, is dangerous.

SmileEachDay · 29/03/2020 08:22

GirlYouHaveNoFaithInMedicine

I agree.

But I’m sending some hypocrisy.

SmileEachDay · 29/03/2020 08:22

*sensing

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2020 08:22

Girl what is worrying you most about what’s being implemented atm?

Chosennone · 29/03/2020 08:26

I agree it is essential to spread the epidemic out and support the NHS sonit is not completely overwhelmed. Surely everyone has the right to as much medical support as possible and a dignified pallative pathway?

However, I do think it is helping with some of the anti social behaviour and petty crime that was fast becoming a scourge within society. I live close to a deprived area with a lot of this. The Police have been able to reprimand drug dealers as no one else is sneaking around. They have had the time and resouces to respond to violent/anti social behaviour because they are not dealing with the pub/club kick out issues.
Gangs of anti social youths, drug runners etc. are being dispersed. This just was not happening before.

Pigsnduvets · 29/03/2020 08:31

HennyPenny4 and I agree BUT where are the dog walkers and runners / people doing exercise allowed to go if they live in a National Park? Without being photographed & shamed online!

MarginalGain · 29/03/2020 08:32

I wonder if any of the people who are worried about government intervention are benefiting from the financial support they have agreed? Or will benefit from the new hospital ITU space?

Not me.

You're looking at this the wrong way round, far more sensible to scutinise support coming from quarters that will profit from the half-trilion pound relief package.

If you're suggesting that people i.e. taxpayers who are forbidden to work should reject any corona-related relief on principle that's a complete nonsense.

Amboseli · 29/03/2020 08:42

@BeijingBikini, 100pc agree. Well said. I've never understood the obsession with trying to live for as long as possible. 80 is plenty afaic.

Sostenueto · 29/03/2020 08:45

As expected tighter measures will be rolled out within a week judging by Michael Goves avoidance of what further measures will entail. We are all going to get a letter from the PM in the next week which will be a change from bills. This is what happens when people don't comply!Hmm

Teateaandmoretea · 29/03/2020 08:45

I'm concerned yes.

I think that the lockdown right now is necessary but different people have massively different expectations about what it will achieve/ how long they want it to last.

I think we are heading for civil unrest regardless of what the government does.

Parker231 · 29/03/2020 08:51

@Amboseli - fine if you don’t want older people to live but don’t risk infecting key workers who are saving lives. Do you really want the death toll Italy and Spain are facing because that is where the UK are heading.

Splodgetastic · 29/03/2020 08:51

I find it concerning that the BBC’s Sunday worship is suggesting that Archbishop Oscar Romero would have approved of the sacrifice of people staying at home. Perhaps so, but I doubt he would have found the coercive legislation appropriate. I don’t really see how they can tighten up the measures further unless it is to write into law a time and / or distance limit on exercise outside and reduce number of food shopping trips to one a week (which we are already sticking to). And I think that is the point at which I would start to ignore the rules.

GirlYouHaveNoFaithInMedicine · 29/03/2020 10:11

@MarshaBradyo

I guess five things in particular

  1. Two years is a long time for this Act to be valid, even with the six monthly review.
  2. Prohibiting gatherings of any sort, whilst sensible for virus outbreaks, is also one way political support for any opposition has historically been squashed.
  3. Being able to section someone in just one doctors say so - other than the current demand for doctors, I struggle to understand why this was necessary but cutting down doctor input into some other processes wasn't.
  4. The way it is being read by the public as we are now 'only allowed to do what we're told' whereas we actually have a legal principle in this country of being able to anything except what the law forbids. There is a difference.
  5. The way the police and public are reading things into the law that are not there - ie adding bits because they think it makes sense for them to be added rather than because that's what the law says. Which is probably an extension of number 4.

I 'worry' as in, these things get my attention and make me want to really question and understand the new law and the way it is being interpreted and enforced. I still understand we need new laws to tackle a new problem and physical distancing plays a role in that.

LouQoo · 29/03/2020 11:31

@GirlYouHaveNoFaithInMedicine

Well explained.

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2020 11:38

Interesting Girl I’m closer to the side of adhering to the instructions and hoping others do too, so some of it doesn’t cause as much concern. But I know we’re all responding differently.

GirlYouHaveNoFaithInMedicine · 29/03/2020 11:42

Oh, I am adhering to the letter Smile

LouQoo · 29/03/2020 12:46

I’m adhering too. Doesn’t mean I wasn’t intimidated by the police yesterday - when I was running round a park local to my house.

Pigsnduvets · 29/03/2020 12:47

Same as LouQoo

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2020 13:00

It must be weird to feel that I haven’t seen any yet.

LouQoo · 29/03/2020 14:40

It is Marsha. Weird and uncomfortable.

I’m a law abiding person, I’ve never even had a speeding fine, so I’ve mostly ignored the police as I always knew they weren’t after me, in fact, their job was to protect me. The reports I’ve seen over the last few days have made me feel nervous when I see them - especially when they slow down and watch me while I’m doing something legal (going for a run, by myself, round my local park). I don’t want to feel intimidated when I see the police - this is the U.K.

Pigsnduvets · 29/03/2020 21:42

I just tweeted my local police who’s Tweets are quite rude & arrogant (like Derbyshire Polices Twitter!) but I got so nervous about the repercussions I deactivated my account! Blush

Completely unlike me!! My DH is shocked that I’m this frightened of them.

HeIenaDove · 29/03/2020 22:16

Im doing two shops a week. Its impossible to do one when you dont drive. Then theres nipping out to top up the key meter.

But this is it. As well as DHs prescription.
