Is no one even a little concerned about the intrusion and removal of freedoms?

I know needs must and we're in a real crisis situation but it does make me a little uneasy to see how easy it has been to remove all freedoms.

The real shocker for me today was the text messages. I've spent the last year or so working on GDPR stuff and all the "threats" associated with that. Who gave the government all our numbers?!

I know it's insignificant in the scheme of things now but is it right that it's so easy?

This popped into my notifications this morning and I thought it made some interesting points on a larger view. Hope link works.

littlebitwooway · 28/03/2020 18:59

Look at it this way, we can stop so many lives being lost, we know how to do this. Slow the spread, save lives, find a vaccine.

To not do it- human rights act number one.

Right to life.

There are all the other rights too and they are not pick and choose but these are not permanent measures. The powers are reviewed every 6 months and in place for 2 years.

katkit · 28/03/2020 18:59

No. In fact, I’m annoyed that for the first time, the behaviour of the ignorant or selfish is having a serious effect on my life. If people don’t behave considerately and stop spreading the virus, then government should come down very hard.

LouQoo · 28/03/2020 19:14

@StormyClouds

“I think it's clear that a lot of police are revelling in the opportunity to bully and intimidate people.”

Agreed and loss of public support will damage them in the long term.

Not only did they slow down and stare at me today, they were approaching people and seemed to be speaking to them aggressively. These were people who were alone, couples and family groups. No one was in a large group having a BBQ, just people out for a run, walk, bike ride, scoot.

Conrad79 · 28/03/2020 19:36

LouQoo totally agree! Pretty much sums up my local police force too.

They’ve lost a lot of respect and trust from the public. Evident via their Facebook page!

LouQoo · 28/03/2020 19:47

@conrad79

Concerning isn’t it? Don’t know if it’s the beat officers being dim and not thinking ahead. Or, if it’s something more sinister, coming from above, ie they are planning to remove our rights longer term and they want us to get used to living in a police state.

adiposegirl2 · 28/03/2020 19:49

Having read about half of the Coronavirus Act 2020 so far, I am alarmed at the totalitarian measures.

Given that this virus is new and invisible, this 'war' could go on for at least the next 2 years- the life of this Act.

Parker231 · 28/03/2020 19:58

As has already been said, there are good and bad people in every profession. The majority of the police are well trained, polite and have good people skills.

This virus is going to be tough to beat so I imagine if the number of deaths carries on increasing, the new regulations will be increased or extended for a much longer period of time.

shiningstar2 · 28/03/2020 20:02

What choice is there. These aren't the rules of an invading army intent on suppressing us. The new laws are there to try and save lives and are not different to rules in place all over Europe and in fact the world. I would rather drive down to my local beach to walk my dog which I normally do every week of my life, rather than strolling around the urban streets near me. The coast line I speak of is my home coast. I have walked there and spent my money there almost every week of my 67 years. Fish and chips, pub meals, drinks and ices for a big family ext ext. I was not, as the news suggests, venturing into areas I would never normally go. So when my freedom to go there was curtailed I felt mildly irritated at first but of course I know that while my own stroll would do no harm Grin if we all do our own thing we will help kill others and maybe even ourselves. Strange times. We are not living under martial law at the whim of an invading army/government. We are trying to stop a serial killer and of course we have to help ourselves and the police do that whatever the individual inconvenience to ourselves.

I have to say, I feel like we're living in some weird Black Mirror episode. Is it worth 100% of people completely shutting down their normal life to prolong the lives of

Conrad79 · 28/03/2020 20:19

As has already been said, there are good and bad people in every profession. The majority of the police are well trained, polite and have good people skills Love this Smile

And the new laws might never be fully removed scared of this!

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 28/03/2020 20:38

Somebody posted on FB a clip of police in a South West town driving around with their costumed mascot walking around waving at the kids. A lovely thing to do and not scaring kids.

They’re posted on entrances to towns and questioning people which is great. Locals here are pleased that they’re stopping the idiot day trippers.

Ylvamoon · 28/03/2020 20:45

Maybe you skeptics need to have a chat with doctors and nurses or the relevant scientists about the issues surrounding coronavirus....

LouQoo · 28/03/2020 21:08

@Ylvamoon

Not skeptical about the science and agree with social distancing. It’s the way that some police forces are behaving that concerns me.

user127819 · 28/03/2020 21:10

@Therollockingrogue
The emergency legislation expires in 2 years. It won't remain indefinitely.

Pigsnduvets · 28/03/2020 21:16

Ylvamoon Maybe you need to start reading threads before commenting on them? Then you’d realise that it’s the aggressive behaviour shown by the police that we’re concerned about.

Don’t be another idiot. The country doesn’t need anymore of those. Wink

LouQoo · 28/03/2020 21:23

@user127819

2 years is plenty of time for the police to stop policing by public consent. That appears to be what my local police are aiming for.

@ilovemyrednosedaymug

Sounds like a sensible police force, trust from the public is essential. (Doesn’t get away from the potential impact of some of the measures in the act though).

Pigsnduvets · 28/03/2020 21:27

ilovemyrednosedaymug this is a fab idea! Smile I hope to see our police force doing this soon.

Parker231 · 29/03/2020 07:17

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/03/28/boris-johnsons-letter-nation-coronavirus-full/

The government are writing to every household about the regulations and that they will go further if they need to.

MarginalGain · 29/03/2020 07:21

My FIL saw the police walk up to a man sitting on the grass at Hyde Park yesterday and tell him he needed to walk or go home.

MarginalGain · 29/03/2020 07:36

Civil unrest is most certainly brewing in Italy.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 29/03/2020 07:44

Surely untimely death is the ultimate loss of freedom?
