Is no one even a little concerned about the intrusion and removal of freedoms?

I know needs must and we're in a real crisis situation but it does make me a little uneasy to see how easy it has been to remove all freedoms.

The real shocker for me today was the text messages. I've spent the last year or so working on GDPR stuff and all the "threats" associated with that. Who gave the government all our numbers?!

I know it's insignificant in the scheme of things now but is it right that it's so easy?

TheSpanielsBalls · 26/03/2020 07:34

Yes. I don't doubt that many of the new 'rules' are necessary and the right thing to do but am concerned at how quickly and easily the government can be handed all out freedoms and very concerned about getting them back again afterwards.

MarginalGain · 26/03/2020 07:39

Not only am I uneasy about the sheer scale of it (25% of all human beings are currently on lockdown), I am even more uneasy about the enthusiasm with which these unprecedented limitations have met, and the vilification of anyone who questions the proportionality of it, who are now considered 'dangerous'.

TamTam25 · 26/03/2020 07:40

No, my mum is positive and probably going to die alone with it. Not enough was done.

teta · 26/03/2020 07:47

No I'm not in the slightest.
I'm more concerned about the removal of mine and my family's life to Covid19. Each idiot ignoring lockdown has the potential to destroy many others lives by their absolute irresponsibility and stupidity.

middleager · 26/03/2020 07:53

Oh TamTam is she in hospital?

TamTam25 · 26/03/2020 07:54

Yes she is in hospital and very scared on her own. We have been visiting up until her result.

TARSCOUT · 26/03/2020 07:58

Not concerned
Worried about my friend in Canada who has cancer and has just had her life saving operation cancelled because too many arseholes value their liberty over peoples lives.

middleager · 26/03/2020 08:04

TamTam I'm so sorry Flowers

if you want to come over to the Worried About Coronavirus thread we can do our best to hand hold.

Me too - especially the vilification bit. I am genuinly amazed at how verbally violent people became and how quickly. Being uncomfortable with the removal of freedoms is not the same thing as flouting them - a principle some people really seem to struggle with on here.

Every day I give my dog some medication to help with a serious infection. That medication makes his fur fall out, makes his skin dry, alters his behaviour etc. I keep giving him that medication because I understand the need for it, but that does not mean I am comfortable about the side effects. Ditto lockdowns and their side effects on freedoms.

MarginalGain · 26/03/2020 08:47

There is no doubt that a sober analysis of the situation will prove that the lives saved by this intervention will be far, far outweighed by the lives lost.

They're discussing this on BBC world service at this very moment.

eaglejulesk · 26/03/2020 09:22

Maybe they’re just organising a surprise party for us all and CV is to distract us whilst they put up the balloons?

Yippee - can't wait Wink

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 09:24

I was surprised at the text

Any theories on how they got our numbers?

TheyAllFloat · 26/03/2020 09:29

Any theories on how they got our numbers?

They didn't. They passed the wording onto all mobile phone comoanies and asked them to send the text out to all their customers.

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 09:30

Oh well there you go easy

TheyAllFloat · 26/03/2020 09:37

Just my guess... Smile

Duchessofblandings · 26/03/2020 09:38

No

Sunnydays60 · 26/03/2020 11:58

I can only guess that most of the people replying 'no' are only thinking about being asked to stay at home. Either that or they are very short sighted. There are even some saying 'not worried at the moment but if turns out to be bad later then I will be'...

I honestly don't get it. It's a good job that some people can look to the future and can cope with thinking about more than one thing at once! Very few people seem bothered that the initial legislation was intended to last 2 years with no questions asked. Even now it's still supposed to last 2 years but 6 month reviews have been added (who knows how easy it will be to change something that's already law). So if the government had been left unchecked and no one had looked to the future, we could be under these rules for 2 years and by the time these unquestioning kinds had woken up to it, it would have been too late.

It amazes me how some people are attacking others for being concerned. In a way I almost think you should be thanking people with minds like that for using their brain power and enabling you to enjoy the benefit whilst you yourself just carry on making the least effort possible.

For the record, I'm happy we're being asked to stay in. (Even though I detest the man and his party, I can see the way it was handled was a stroke of genius on Bojo's behalf as a way to garner support). I do wonder though how many people actually understand what else comes along with the legislation (and I'm not just talking about police being able to fine you if you don't comply).

Duchessofblandings · 26/03/2020 12:06

ATM I’m not really worried about the future, I’m just hoping that my loved ones have one. So, I understand the concerns of others who maybe aren’t personally affected in such a direct way, I completely understand the civil liberties implications, but they're just not my priority right now.

alittlebitdemented · 26/03/2020 13:07

@Thepigeonsarecoming @RedDiamond @Sostenueto
Just to let you kind people know, my dad passed away this morning. I got to be with him, thankfully, but my mum didn't. He was a lovely kind cantankerous bugger but he is now a very very sad statistic.

HerRoyalCarbyLess · 26/03/2020 13:10

@alittlebitdemented I'm so sorry Flowers

StapleMyBananas · 26/03/2020 16:12

Terrified, OP.

The sooner the armed forces are on the streets the better.

I just saw this on another thread and am gobsmacked how willingly and easily everyone has handed over freedoms. More than that, mn is filled with people saying things like:

"The government has given us one exercise session a day" rather than "the government has taken all but one exercise session a day from us"

Or

"We should be grateful we've been allowed out for exercise and food" like it's a gift we should thank someone for rather than those freedoms being basic rights.

I don't doubt that this is probably the best way to beat the virus, nor do I doubt that the virus needs to be beaten. But I remain very wary of some of these restrictions sticking around longer than they are strictly needed.

hamsterchump · 26/03/2020 16:18

@StapleMyBananas Did you see the one that said we should feel grateful we're not getting tasered by the police!

Other notable gems are calls for forced medical experimentation on rule breakers and tattoos/brands on faces so we can all see their shame!

Womenwotlunch · 26/03/2020 16:19

Yes

Womenwotlunch · 26/03/2020 16:21

@alittlebitdemented, sorry for your loss x

StapleMyBananas · 26/03/2020 16:21

@hamsterchump

Yep. Wish I'd remembered it for my post now because it was an exceptionally scary one. We have a LOT to be grateful to our police force for and I am extremely grateful for the work they do (actually I work with the police in my job) but being grateful for not being tasered is like thanking my parents for not hitting me as a child.
