Shops taking the mickey

I saw a post from my shopping centre and a few shops staying open. I can understand M and S food hall, Holland and Barratt at a push and Poundland sells food and some limited medicines, How do RS McColl and the vape shop justify what they are doing and why is nobody forcing these shops to shutdown? I know some RS MCcoll sell food but this one just sells tobacco, junk food and papers and magazines.

McColl usually have a Paypoint for electricity maybe that's why?

Mamadothehump · 24/03/2020 15:33

Newsagents are allowed to stay open.

Rhinosaurus · 24/03/2020 15:33

Newsagents are allowed to stay open.

chipsandpeas · 24/03/2020 15:33

junk food is still food

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 24/03/2020 15:44

Newsagent are allowed to stay open with is what Ms Coll is?

Even junk food is well...food

Fatted · 24/03/2020 15:45

Mccolls is a convenience shop so makes sense to stay open

PurpleDaisies · 24/03/2020 15:46

I didn’t think food had to pass a health test to be sold.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/03/2020 15:47

Newsagents - fine.
Vape shop - pushing it and should be closed.

TheLinerunner · 24/03/2020 15:52

Of course corner shops and convenience shops can stay open.

Gas, electric, food, milk, drinks, newspapers, stationery - and many sell nappies, baby formula and big rolls.

I'd rather a vape shop stayed open than people went back on the fags. I'd rather a functioning but dependent alcohol got a drink than went into shock.

Gingerkittykat · 24/03/2020 16:07

I never thought about the electricity keypoints but I would hardly say crisps and cans of coke are needed right now.

OP posts:
DitheringDoris · 24/03/2020 16:10

Crisps and coke are needed right now, along with chocolate, cake and wine. I’m going to come out the other side of this 3 stone heavier.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 24/03/2020 16:11

I'm another that would rather people would vape than smoke. Tjhough I think you can buy all the stuff online ?

PurpleDaisies · 24/03/2020 16:13

I would say crisps and fizzy pop are essential right now.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 24/03/2020 16:17

I've just bought cat food and cat litter from my local McColl's, both of which were completely sold out in Tesco's so I'm selfishly really glad that they're open. It saved me walking further as well.

AhoyMrBeaver · 24/03/2020 16:18

Shops like McColls all sell the basics, and keep folk out of town centres and big supermarkets. They all sell bread, milk, newspapers, top-ups, stamps etc etc.

I really don't know why you'd be confused about their purpose.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 24/03/2020 16:19

I disagree, life is a bit dire at the moment. Your not taking my chocolate, crisps or cola or my wine- that would be even more miserable I need my simply pleasures right now.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 24/03/2020 16:19

@YoursTunbridgeWells might be local to you too.

ClashCityRocker · 24/03/2020 16:21

At my mccolls today I got fresh mushrooms, lettuce and tomatoes, chicken fillets and fajita mix.

What's junky about that?

playthestation · 24/03/2020 16:26

know some RS MCcoll sell food but this one just sells tobacco, junk food and papers and magazines.

Right, so a newsagent then?

How are they 'taking the mickey' but staying open when Boris spelt it out in black and white that they can stay open Confused

Glaceon · 24/03/2020 16:40

Gregg's and Stacey's are open. I've messaged Stacey's bakery and told them how I feel now. I wont be buying their again either. Game was open apparently but I cant say for sure as not been that far no need to.

I dont give a toss if they want to call themselves essential they're not. They're one of the main reasons the elderly are still flocking to town. There are multiple supermarkets they can easily use. They're going in like a small bakery that's usually sold out by 2pm is keeping all the surrounding towns going. Erm. No. Ya not. Get a grip and go the fuck home. Those of us who live here struggle to go to our local shops because no one else is using their own locals they're coming into town for a jolly fucking wander around.
