I've always been a bit like this. If someone buys me a gift I save it, for a special occasion or for best.

I notice last night I'm now doing it with everything. We had spag bol last night, there was me do we really need cheese? Best not bother with garlic bread.

Biscuits, no don't eat those, save them.....

That's the last packet of something, save it.

Strange feeling. I suppose I am almost meal planning based around what we have most of and saving anything else in case I have an emergency requiring cheese and or garlic bread.

Light hearted. Slowly going mad.....

We have been having less milk in our tea and coffee, smaller glasses of orange juice, slightly smaller portions - just to reduce the amount of times we need to go to the supermarket. Milk dictates when we go so if we can get another two days out of it all the better.

moobar · 24/03/2020 16:11

@Donkeytail you have been really lucky. We are rural and whilst we have our own meat, the shops are bare. No cheeses, little fresh fruit and veg, no dried goods, tinned goods. I am only going on e a fortnight as I don't want to add to the problem but what I do have I am saving the good bits.

If I knew I could get cheese next week, I would use the cheese. I can't though.

@caz114 Believe me, I’m already close....very, very close....I do live next door to a cemetery Grin

I know that you can't compare all this to the last war, ( I am an oldie) but it's the attitude that prevailed in the war years, as in eke things out,and save some food for later, that's if we could get any food at all. It makes you appreciate things all the more, when things eventually get better.

feelingverylazytoday · 24/03/2020 16:27

Yes I'm being careful with my food. But it's not the first time, I've had to do it before for financial reasons.
Donkeytail I don't drive so I have to walk to the shop and buy what I can carry home , whilst looking after my autistic LD daughter. So I want to make that food last for as long as I can to reduce the number of times I have to go into a shop and risk getting infected.

BriefDisaster · 24/03/2020 16:36

DH cut his finger quite badly and decided that he needed chocolate for the shock....he opened the massive bar of galaxy I had stashed for a 'special treat' now the kids have spied it and between them they have eaten over half already!

I despair.

moita · 24/03/2020 16:52

I'm being far less wasteful and ashamed what we threw away before.

But I will be drinking the bottle of prosecco I was saving...why not now?.

emilybrontescorsett · 24/03/2020 17:05

Sorry, I’m not actually well. I very rarely get ill but I am now. I can’t go to the doctors and my anxiety is sky high.
Dp and I drank the expensive champagne we had saved.
I know it’s a light hearted thread and I’m sorry I’m just upset I cannot see my elderly mum. I darent tell her I’m Ill as she will worry.
IM lucky that dp is an excellent cook so can cook from scratch.
On the plus side I’m not using petrol and feel that the environment will definitely benefit.
Don’t deprive yourself though! We all deserve that Prosecco/chocolate .

nedtherobbot · 24/03/2020 18:14

I'm hording food here and monitoring dh's and dc's portion sizes. Usually I shop most days to keep us all fed. Dh has had to change his eatting habits recently anyway, dentist said to stop constant grazing. Between them they can go through masses, particularly cereal and bread. I want to go out as little as possible so I'm focusing on making it last. There is lots of other things for them to eat but I think lots of it boardom and habit. Thankfully I'm well stocked with baking ingredients but waiting for each bake to be completely gone before making something else. Also making smaller quantities much to the upset of dh's sweet tooth.

MadisonAvenue · 24/03/2020 18:43

I’m finding myself being very careful with food, and I remind myself of my Mom as she grew up in the war so it was ingrained in her that nothing was ever wasted and that’s how it was when I was growing up, I’d obviously taken notice.

I’m making sure my husband and adult sons have enough and if I go without so be it, I was called a martyr on here last night by someone who clearly wanted to make a feminism point but no, I’m just a mother who is looking after her family. I could do with losing a few pounds anyway, plus if they’re hungry they’ll just go hunting out more food later.

Donkeytail obviously I don’t know where you are in the country but the supermarkets near to me are still poorly stocked so meat, veg and dairy, frozen foods and bread are still difficult to get.
Boiled eggs for lunch would be a real treat at the moment, none of the supermarkets or smaller shops seem to have them and we don’t have any independent greengrocers or butchers in the nearest town.

thenightsky · 24/03/2020 18:50

I'm eating the weird stuff at the bottom of the chest freezer. Last night was 'god knows what's in them' pies with random veg. The pies had something stuck to them, which turned out to be cardboard. They were fine.

I'm craving macaroni cheese made with really, really strong cheddar, but we are down to the last little block of cheese.

I'm wondering if that 20 year old dusty bottle of sangria in the garage is still any good... Hmm

Slurpy · 24/03/2020 18:57

Yes, I'm doing this! Not eating until I'm absolutely starving, and really examining what we use.
I made chips last night, and normally we'd have beans and veggie sausages, but decided to save the sausages for another day so we had beans and chips (it was great!).
Despite having chips last night, I've lost 7 pounds in the last week (stress and rationing). The kids seem to be realising that when the biscuits are gone, they're gone. A good excuse to evaluate how wasteful we used to be.

moobar · 24/03/2020 20:29

@emilybrontescorsett it's ok, I'm so anxious to and face the same issues.

I had very bad post natal anxiety and it's worse than ever again.

Whilst I am being lighthearted here, I do need to watch my compulsive behaviour at the same time.

So I will open that champagne, soon.

I'm still saving my garlic bread though. Wink

Also giggling to myself at Mo Farah and the snack cupboard.

Yes re waste as well. I thought I didn't waste a lot. We have chickens so scraps go there usually, meat to dogs. Chickens are getting way less now!

OP posts:
Iwantedthat · 25/03/2020 08:06

We're having a lot less waste, my partner won't usually eat left over food but he had Sundays mash on Monday with sausage and Old green beans from the freezer, me and 2 kids had pasta sausage and sauce, there was a dish of that left for my dinner yesterday and the kids had the pasta that was left that I didn't put the sauce on cold with mayo and chicken /cheese. We all like treats though, so I've hidden biscuits in various places to avoid temptation.
I was thinking oh having our main meal at lunch time so we've got time to burn it off through the day but worried we'd still get just as hungry and eat more in 'bits' at tea time. Treasuring the beans. Also fitting in the designated 'school' breaks with snacks.

PrincessPain · 25/03/2020 08:09

I've been trying to ration mine and DHs meals. We normally have much bigger portions than recommended 😳
So if I half the portion size I should hopefully lose some weight and the food should last twice as long.
I have definitely been thinking about freshness, portion size, meal planning and thinking about the dusty tins in the back of the cupboard and what they can be used for.
Hoping I can come out the other side of this slimmer and with more appreciation for the food we have.

HeronLanyon · 25/03/2020 16:03

Just had quite heated debate with dp about planned vegan sausages, peas (the only green we have left after two weeks in now) and AND an egg each. The debate centred around the egg which seems essential and extravagant and that difference caused sang froid.
I am not cooking so think I may need to take back seat and an egg as well !

GatoradeMeBitch · 25/03/2020 16:12

I usually throw away broccoli stalks but I've been cleaning them, chopping them up and throwing them into a bag in the freezer. The idea is that if I can't get green veg, I can throw a handful in with soup or something.

HeronLanyon · 25/03/2020 16:53

Mmm brocolli stalks gatorade I love these more than florets. Stir fried last broccoli last night with last of fresh ginger and some soy sauce. Sliced woody stems thin and started them cooking first. Gorgeous. !!
